Short Session Description: Teaching Academic Research to Global Nomads: Insights and Strategies
Full Session Description: "Global Nomads" are students who live in a culture that is different from that (or those) of their parents. In order to teach them to do academic research, we must take into account the values, beliefs, norms and backgrounds of multiple cultures while developing their understanding of an information literacy process that is based on "Western" norms. We'll share insights and strategies from our own experience, as we tackle questions like:
· How do we teach an academic research process to third-culture students from primarily non-Western cultures?
· How do students with collectivist beliefs learn concepts like voice, point of view, argument and persuasion?
· How do we help students from cultures where filial piety is valued to appreciate the benefit and importance of attribution and citation - and recognize the seriousness of plagiarism?
· What cultural competencies do teachers and librarians need to develop in order to teach the research process to third-culture students?
