Our middle school is hosting author Tim Green during early October 2013. He will be in the Plainville area on the 8th, 9th, or 10th. He is looking for other schools in Connecticut who may be interested in having him visit during the same week. Mr. Green has written 10 books about football and baseball for students in grades 4-8, including Nutmeg nominee Baseball Great. Please let me know if you would like him to visit your school and we can coordinate his visits to our mutual benefit.

The following information is from Illyssa Green, Tim's wife:

"My husband, Tim Green, is a best-selling author with a series of sports-based novels for middle grade readers. His books have excited boys and girls alike, sports fans and non-sports fans because of their suspenseful pacing and moral conflicts. Still, people may be most excited about the impact he has on young boys who are reluctant readers. Not a day goes by when he doesn't hear from kids with stories about how they weren't readers, but now are because of Tim's books. This is partly why he has sold over a million copies in the series, and his latest, UNSTOPPABLE, went to #2 on the NY Times list. Like many authors in this genre, Tim spends a significant amount of time doing school presentations varying in range from 3rd-8th grade. He has spoken at over 600 schools and reached over a quarter of a million students from Maine to Florida, New York to Texas and California, and almost every state in between. The thing that differentiates Tim from most other authors is that he uses every dollar of the speaking fees he earns to buy books that he gives away to schools, libraries, and students who otherwise can't afford them. Often times the money a school pays him is used entirely to buy books for its own students. Sometimes schools will share the wealth of books with another school less fortunate in their area. With the wealthier schools, Tim will use their money to buy books for a list of schools he knows needs them from his extensive travels.

Tim's presentations cost $1500 and last about an hour. He likes to speak to as many students as possible, often entire schools of over a thousand students. His message is quite unique in that as a former eight year NFL veteran and first round draft choice, Tim is a staunch advocate for the importance of education and character OVER sports. While he describes some of the thrills of being a pro athlete and the rigorous exercise it takes to get to the NFL, he informs kids that exercise for their brains -to educate themselves as high and far as they possibly can- and heart -to build character and be a true success- is reading books. He then goes on to describe his job as an author to make reading entertainment, something fast and engaging with good guy and girl characters taking them into a time and place that's thrilling and new."
