Subject: [aaslforum] An Exceptional Summer Opportunity for School Librarians

Are you looking for summer professional development that will transform your school library into an “inclusive” library for all students, while having opportunities to collaborate with your classroom and special ed teacher colleagues?

We are looking for school librarians nationwide to participate in Project ENABLE (Expanding Nondiscriminatory Access BLibrarians Everywhere) professional development workshops in which you will do just that.

The project will host 30 librarian-led, collaborative, 3-educator teams from across the country, living and learning together as they attend one of the 4 ½ day summer professional development workshops at Syracuse University in summer 2013.

Here’s what you can expect to accomplish from your participation:

---Learn about a range of topics from awareness of various disabilities and the impact of disability laws on schools to understanding how to differentiate instruction for students of varying abilities and apply principles of Universal Design for Learning.
---Develop collaborative action plans, lesson plans and learning materials that are inclusive for students of all ability levels.
---Participate in simulations that allow you to experience how disability impacts your students.
---Expand your practical knowledge of Web 2.0 tools, experience hands-on interactions with assistive technology devices, and interact with users of assistive communications devices.
---Conduct a library accessibility evaluation using ADA and Universal Design principles to discover how to transform your library into an inclusive library.
---Understand and use Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
---Return to you district to share what your new knowledge with colleagues at a district or regional event, sometime during the 2013-14 school year (and receive an honorarium from Project ENABLE for doing so).

Project ENABLE is sponsored by the Center for Digital Literacy at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University and funded by a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarians grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS). Workshop fees, travel, and housing expenses while in Syracuse to attend a PE workshop will be paid by the grant.

If you have questions, want more information or wish to apply to participate, go to the Project ENABLE Web site at http://projectenable.syr.edu/WORKSHOPS/Applications and follow the directions or contact us at cdl@syr.edu.
