Celebrating excellence
Rebecca T. Miller, Editor-in-Chief

Rebecca Miller
Librarians have the capacity to be powerful ambassadors of learning and transformation. To help raise awareness of the most excellent among them, SLJ has launched two new awards this year: the School Librarian of the Year Award and the Build Something Bold Design Award.

If you know a K–12 school library professional who embodies outstanding professional achievement and the exemplary use of 21st-century tools and services to engage children and teens toward fostering multiple literacies, take a look at the guidelines for the 2014 SLJ School Librarian of the Year Award, sponsored by Scholastic Library Publishing. The winner will receive a $2,500 cash award, plus $2,500 worth of print and digital materials from Scholastic Library Publishing, and will be profiled in the September 2014 issue of SLJ. Nominations close May 23.

If it’s a library you know is awesome, take a look at the guidelines for the SLJ and LEGO Education Build Something Bold Design Award. This award seeks to recognize innovative design within a school library or classroom that demonstrates exemplary and creative use of library space and resources to both engage children and teens while enhancing multiple literacies─from basic reading skills to digital competencies. Our design space winner will receive a $5,000 cash award and a LEGO Education StoryStarter Classroom set with software and curriculum, and the space will be profiled in SLJ’s November issue. Nominations close May 31.
