In this webinar, David Serchay will help you develop your graphic novel collection by providing a wealth of tips and practical advice about buying, recommending, cataloging, and shelving graphic novels. You will gain invaluable knowledge about graphic novels and how best to build and manage an optimal collection that is targeted both to please the format’s many dedicated fans and to help others discover it.


12 Months of Children's Programming: Grades K through 6

Monday, 9/15, 10am at the Avon Free Public Library

Library programs and services for children need to incorporate programs for elementary-age children that integrate the school, the library, and the community. Lisa M. Shaia and Joanne M. Moore will show librarians how to do just this using their fully-integrated, holistic approach, which builds children’s programming with schools and the full calendar year in mind. 


Affirming Our Mission: Grant and Project Management Workshop

Wednesday, 9/17, 9am. Location: MLSC

Writing a winning grant is only one part of creating successful programs at your library. At this half-day workshop, we will look at research conducted comparing the role of libraries to the experiences of librarians, and walk you through the process of creating a successful grant-funded project.

In this workshop, you will learn about your institution’s records management responsibilities and your own responsibilities. Topics include basic concepts of records management such as records retention and disposition and best practices for managing email and electronic records.


Wednesday Webinar Series: Tablets for Library Research

Wednesday, 9/24, 10am. Location: Online (your computer)

In this webinar, Rita Gavelis will demonstrate how tablets can function like a desktop or laptop in the library, from searching publications databases, to creating and editing documents. Though an iPad will be used for demonstration purposes, the content of the webinar can apply to many Android tablets as well.


Portal, Platform, Public Option: An introduction & overview of the Digital Public Library of America (ASCLA webinar)

Wednesday, 9/24 at 3pm Location: MLSC

This overview presentation explores how we view the Digital Public Library of America: as a portal, a technical platform, and an advocate for the public good. Within that, we talk about our Hubs model, do a walkthrough of the site, talk about copyright and the value of opening up our resources to greater usage, and APIs. There will be a Q&A for participants to have their questions answered about the DPLA.


Wet Books and Other Collection Emergencies

Tuesday, 9/30, 9am. Location: MLSC

Jane Cullinane, Preservation Librarian at the Connecticut State Library will discuss how to plan for and deal with collection emergencies. Attendees will learn how to assess risks to their collections, what to include in an emergency response plan and steps for recovery from a collection emergency.
