Fandom and buzz

If I Stay hit theaters on August 22 with much anticipation and fanfare around the film adaptation of Gayle Forman's hit YA novel. Speaking of fanfare—SLJ attended the fifth annual LeakyCon, an international fandom event for proud geeks of all stripes, this year in Orlando, Florida. We not only got a great peek at an exclusive after-hours event "Open at the Close" inside Universal Studios Theme Park but also attended some amazing sessions, including a fan-led panel for “Anxiety, Depression, and a Drug Called Fandom,” where speakers talked about how fandom has been used as a coping mechanism for dealing with emotional and mental issues.
Fandom is a powerful entity that creates community—and so do libraries and their programs, like this innovative library gardening program teaching kids about nutrition, the environment, and gardening.
