I am at Broad Brook School, preK-4.  We did this for the first time last spring, using the Mouse and the Motorcycle.  The hardest part was obtaining enough copies of the book to give one to each family (400+). I used some Scholastic Dollars, some teachers donated their Scholastic points, and the literacy coach had a small Walmart grant.
During the last week of Jan, each day, a clue to the book's identity was announced, and students tried to guess the title.  This also generated enthusiasm and curiosity. We encouraged families to read together during the month of Feb. I think we provided some discussion questions.  Our culminating event was a family night which included a costume parade, and many fun activities related to the book.  People really enjoyed it and it met our goals of getting parents in the school more often, giving families a chance to connect socially, and of course, promoting reading.  This was open to the whole school but was optional.  I notice some students reading the sequel afterwards.
