Conflict Resolution Techniques
The workplace is filled with people from differing backgrounds and experiences, which often leads to conflict situations at all levels of the organization. Being able to handle conflict in a productive way is frequently mentioned as one of the most challenging skills for people. This workshop is designed to help you reflect on your current approach to handling conflicts, so you are aware of the areas on which you need to work. We will discuss the DNA of conversation management: Clarity, neutrality, and temperance. Finally we’ll share with you some effective conflict resolution strategies that will help you encourage a more cooperative environment.
At the end of this workshop you will:
• Understand your own reaction to conflict situations and what skills you need to develop to temper those situations.
• Learn to evaluate the conflict to determine how best to address it.
• Learn strategies to set the stage for a productive conversation about the conflict.
• Learn ways to tactically address difficult behaviors during a conversation.
• Determine a plan to improve the conflict situation.

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Disciplinary and Firing Procedures

For many managers, conducting disciplinary and firing procedures can be almost as stressful as it is for the employee concerned. And yet, if this is your responsibility, avoiding this stressful situation can be even more stressful in the long run. It is critical that correct procedures be followed to avoid costly mistakes for the library and to maintain good working relationships between staff members. This workshop will cover possible corrections before disciplinary action, preparation for a disciplinary interview, documentation of employee actions, and options for final resolution of disciplinary action including dismissal.
At the end of this workshop you will:
• Have a checklist of possible corrections before disciplinary action is needed.
• Understand how to prepare for a disciplinary interview.
• Know what must legally be included in the disciplinary interview and warning.
• Understand when and how to document problem behavior.
• Know the format for a legal final written warning.
