Hi Marybeth,

A Community Read over each summer has been a tradition at Canton Middle School for awhile. With one exception there has been a single title for both grades 7 and 8.  We invite faculty and staff to form a small committee early in the calendar year, suggest titles, and narrow selections down to a few. We are in final evaluation now for the 2016 title, but here is a retrospective list of titles we have used in the past. Our advisory groups and teams develop activities that continue throughout the year. Our PTO purchases approximately 20 copies for Canton Public Library, and we share the information as well as our annual suggested reading list with Hartford Public Library for our Hartford students.  Hope this helps.

Pay It Forward (2015)
Wonder (Gr.7) and Counting By 7's (Gr.8) (2014)
Wonder (2013)
Bystander (2012)
All of the Above (2011)
Every Soul a Star (2010)
Home of the Brave (2009)
Pictures of Hollis Woods (2008)
Chicken Boy (2007)
Things Not Seen (2006)
Flipped (2005)
The Misfits (2004)

Marybeth,

I know that One Book, One School programs are quite successful. Just figured I'd throw out another idea. We have a Book Fest program (currently in our 3rd year). Book clubs are a part of our Book Fest activities. Our teachers choose different books; students then choose the book club they'd like to join. We all read our books during our long Spring Recess, then we meet in our book clubs after we get back. Teachers and students have really enjoyed this program.

Kind regards,
~Valerie

Hello CASL friends,

Our middle school is considering a One Book, One School endeavor for this coming school year.  We are in the beginning stages and have not even picked our book yet.  We are looking at middle school appropriate books with a service learning or kindness theme.  Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie is at the top of the list at the moment.  We are hoping to follow the reading with a guest speaker or assembly.

I’m writing  in case you or your school has any interest in book-sharing.  We have about 400 students, and in the past the school purchased books for all or most students.  Last year all students read the book Wonder.  There was the idea that if another school did the same, we could trade books on alternating years.

It’s a thought, and if you are interested, please let me know.

Happy Friday!

Thank you,

Marybeth
