WINTER 2016
Dear Educators,

At the start of a new year, not only does our education team keep busy with student outreach programs at area schools and professional development workshops across the region, but we continue to finalize 2016 events and programs at The Carle. We're thrilled with the guests coming to The Carle this year, which include artists Gareth Hinds and Grace Lin, and scholar Leonard S. Marcus.

This is also the time of year when many teachers are calling us to plan their spring field trips. Our special exhibition Magic, Color, Flair: the world of Mary Blair will be on view through February 21, and then we get ready for Magician of the Modern:
The Art of Leonard Weisgard (March 8 - June 5, 2016).
Weisgard, who illustrated over 200 children's books and was influenced by mid-century modernism and American folk art, won the 1947 Caldecott Medal for The Little Island, and regularly collaborated on books with author Margaret Wise Brown, including the Noisy Books series (1939) and The Important Book (1949).

Already planning for the 2016-2017 school year? Consider a fall 2016 field trip to visit Americana on Parade: The Art of Robert McCloskey. This year marks the 75th anniversary of his Caldecott-winning book, Make Way for Ducklings (1941).

We look forward to welcoming you to The Carle in 2016!

Courtney Waring

Director of Education

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
February 19, 2016
9:30am - 12:30pm
$40 (Members $34)

(3 PDPs) Discover the difference between reading with children and reading to children. This session will include a chance for participants to observe a storytime at The Carle to see the Whole Book Approach in action. Afterwards, the group will discuss their observations and explore how to evaluate the picture book as an art form with the goal of using this critical engagement with the picture book as a platform for interactive reading experiences.
Instructor: Emily Prabhaker

March 5, 2016
9:30am - 12:30pm
$40 (Members $34)

(3 PDPs) Have you ever admired the colorful painted-paper window hangings in the art studio and wanted to make your own? Our popular window-display idea can be used many ways: to shade a bright space, feature your students' work in the classroom, or simply brighten your home.  Join us for this hands-on workshop to learn how to paint and assemble your own easy-hanging display. We'll also discuss the source of this project's inspiration: Eric Carle's tissue paper-painting process. The Carle will provide the supplies for you to paint and assemble a nine-panel window hanging that you can complete with your own tension rod.
