Innovations in Education Study Tour 2017

Pistoia, Italy
March 13-17, 2017

Educators are invited to explore the early childhood centers of Pistoia, Italy, where the value of aesthetics and deeply held beliefs about the potential and rights of all children and families are so foundational. This is The Carle's fifth tour, building on a ten-year collaboration with colleagues in Pistoia. The tour is organized by The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and the Assessorato all'Educazione del Commune di Pistoia in cooperation with Smith College. More details coming soon. Click here for an itinerary from the 2015 trip. For more information email programs@carlemuseum.org or call (413) 559-6305.

When we talk about diverse books, we often talk about "windows and mirrors." But what does that really mean? And why is it important? Join author/illustrator Grace Lin as she discusses her own personal experiences, her approaches to work and how she chooses books for her own child in this year's BERL lecture. Check out Grace Lin's Tedx Talk.

Parents, Grandparents and Caretakers: Are you interested in providing the children in your life with a creative and developmentally rich environment in your home? Meghan Burch, Art Educator at The Carle and parent, will help guide you toward the materials and ideas for setting up your own art area inspired by The Carle's Art Studio and early learning centers in Reggio Emilia and Pistoia, Italy. (5 PDPs) Using some of our favorite picture books and our beautiful surrounds, we'll explore ways to link the art and design of the picture book with an exploration of the natural world and a variety of open-ended art projects. Designed to enhance your science curriculum or provide ways to share outdoor time with your children, the program includes time spent outside, so please dress accordingly. We also suggest you bring a brownbag lunch in order to maximize workshop time.

June 2, 2016
1:00pm - 4:00pm

(3 PDPs) Experiment with stamping, texture rubbings, and other ways to make unique collage papers with young children. Learn about how the Art Studio uses collage to connect young children with picture books, literacy, the creative thinking process, and their own curiosities. As we create collages of our own, we'll dip into design and color theory to better help us understand how picture book artists think and work. Leave with art you've made yourself, texture making tools, and ideas you can use in the classroom or at home.
