I am relatively new in my position and looking for ideas for what makes a great summer reading program. The English department and I are looking to get away from required reading lists and worksheets that have been assigned in the past; this year, we opened
it up entirely to free choice and I made a little video promoting reading and a handout including the Nutmeg nominees and some recommendations from students (and we ditched the worksheets altogether, yay!). I would like to do even more next year, maybe even
having students host book chats in the fall on numerous titles. I have supportive administrators/ fellow teachers, a core crew of voraciously reading kids, and a great public library open to collaboration to help me out; I want to make sure I use them to their
fi\ull potential to get kids reading more. What have you done that has really gotten teenagers excited about reading for pleasure over the summer? Do you have any logistical advice for me?
Thanks,
Katie
