Library staff who acquired skills on the job in the areas of Public Services and/or Cataloging and Classification, but do not have formal training, have an opportunity to take Special Topics courses. Students will learn how to apply and use the competency standards set by the ALA. Successful students may then elect to take Credit by Exam for an additional 3 credits for their transcript.
Credit by Exam:
Library Support Staff who currently work in libraries may be awarded for up to 50% of the LTA certificate or 12 credits for a total of four LTA courses. Students must successfully complete the 1-credit Special Topic course before they can take Credit by Exam for the course area. Students may then elect to take a final, project-based exam based on the ALA-LSSC standards ($15 fee). Upon passing the exam, students will receive 3 college credits for the specific course (LIB K101 – Introduction to Library Public Services or LIB K116 – Cataloging and Classification).
Registration:
Because the LTA program is fully online, students do not need to come to campus and thus are encouraged to register as a distance learning student using the Three Rivers Community College Combined Application and Registration Form. The link can be found at:
