We have playaways. The kids love them and they only require AAA batteries (I buy the rechargeable kind to get the most bang for my buck).

Since CDs are kind of a dead technology, I am sure you could find an extremely inexpensive (maybe even free in some places) CD player that could be checked out to students if they wanted to check out the audiobooks on CD. I would try a thrift shop like Savers.

Hello,

We have a substantial collection of audiobooks on CD (including MP3), but many students no longer own CD players. I am wondering what others have done so that these materials can still be of use. Has anyone actually purchased small disc players for checkout with an audiobook? Other ideas? Also, what have you purchased in place of the CDs? Playaways? Are your students accessing digital audiobooks as much as they did CDs? Thanks in advance!
