My grade 8 English teachers would like to take a break from To Kill a Mockingbird, so we're scoping out some possibilities to replace. I just finished reading Dust Girl and loved it. I see much potential for discussion and activities (1930s music, Dust Bowl history, prejudice, racism, coming-of-age, journey, fantasy/fairies, even food, etc.). Has anyone used this book in an English class yet and care to share feedback/lessons?

I just started reading The Girl in the Blue Coat, and have some other potential possibilities too.

Thanks for any feedback,
~Val
