The following workshops have been added to the continuing education
schedule for Jan./Feb. 2008. To register access the Continuing Education

Advanced Excel
In this workshop you will move beyond the basics and explore more
advanced functions, including Today, IF and PMT. You will learn how to
name cells and ranges, use those names in formulas and functions. In
addition, you will explore the powerful database features of Excel that
make it easy to sort, filter and add subtotals
Topics will include:
Creating advanced functions
Naming cells and ranges
Developing formulas using named cells and ranges
Using 3-D functions to calculate across worksheets
Defining absolute and relative references
Creating elapsed time/day formulas
Constructing databases
Sorting, filtering and subtotaling data
Creating pivot tables
**Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Excel and Excel formulas is a
needed**
Your instructor will be Diane McKeever, President of Professional
Support Services, a software training company. Diane had her own
desktop publishing company for many years, producing newsletters, flyers
and brochures for a variety of clients. She is the Lead Trainer for the
Houlihan-Lawrence Realty Co. in New York State and an instructor for

Library 2.0 Overview
What is Library 2.0 and why is it important? Loosely defined Library
2.0 describes an approach to library service that is interactive,
collaborative, and driven by user needs and expectations. Library 2.0
calls for libraries to encourage user participation and feedback in the
development and maintaining of library service. In this full-day
workshop we’ll explore the basics of Library 2.0. We will also explore
a selection of Library 2.0 tools (Librarything, Flickr, Del.icio.us,
Wiki and more) with plenty of hands-on time to practice. In addition
participants will create a class Wiki about how to use these tools in
the library and how to teach patrons how to use them.
Topics covered include:
Library 2.0 basics
Librarything, Flickr, Del.icio.us, Wiki and more
Uses in the library for staff and patrons
Your instructor is Polly-Alida Farrington, President of PA Farrington
Associates, a consulting firm specializing in internet training and
website development. Before forming her own training and consulting firm
in 1997, Polly was a librarian at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for
17 years, working in Reference, Government Documents, ILL and
Automation. She is a graduate of State University of New York at Albany.

Working Smarter in Microsoft Windows/Word
Learn how to become a power user of Windows and Word. Now that you
make your way around these programs, come explore their “hidden”
features.
Windows topics include:
Using the right mouse button
Creating shortcuts
Adding icons to the Start menu
Exploring the Windows Explorer
Knowing when to use Systems Tools like the Scan Disk and Disk
Defragmenter
Setting up automatic start up for your favorite programs
In Microsoft Word we’ll get you past boring documents and get you
working on visually exciting ones. Maybe you won’t have to buy that
expensive page set up program, to get the results you’re looking for.
Word topics include:
Adding page borders with clip art pictures
Inserting graphics - both clip art and digital pictures
Wrapping text around graphics
Adding watermarks to the background
Inserting banners and other shapes
Creating hyperlinks to other documents and web pages
