[Conntech] OCLC records

Carolyn,

We at Library Connection have been aware of this
problem since August. Baker & Taylor gave OCLC
copies of all their Title Source records in order
to get OCLC control numbers on the bib records. I
don't know who made the decision to load the
records into WordCat but OCLC has throughly
polluted their database with these awful records.

Baker & Taylor created these records before they
had the titles in their warehouse. B&T told OCLC
that they would send them a fuller record once
the title has arrived. There is no commitment to
a time frame for getting a fuller record.

In the meantime, OCLC is expecting their members
to voluntarily go into WorldCat and upgrade these
records. Who has the time?

OCLC offered to upgrade the records through their
Bib notification service. This meant that OCLC
was charging us for bib records that B&T was
providing for free AND charging us for an
upgraded record.

After much persistence, OCLC has agreed to give
CatExpress libraries free upgrades of these Level
3 records.
