How do you maintain those bookmarks with lists of urls? That's a terrific idea!!!

We have instituted this in our children's department and are about to do the same in adult collection. We pulled the ready reference material out and shelved it near the desk and left out some basic encyclopedias as well. The rest got bright new reference labels on them and a bookmark reminding folks that it was for use in the library only and listing some of the electronic resources they might want to check out as well. Staff or volunteers replenish these as needed. It has taken some patrons a while to get used to not being able to take out something they found on the shelf but, frankly, many didn't understand that they couldn't take them when they were on a separate set of shelves.

The advantage of having most material on a topic together outweighs the disadvantages of re-training. Now people, especially those less familiar with library protocol, don't need professional intervention to find their way from the circulating 930s to the encyclopedia of ancient civilizations on the other side of the room. A great boon when demand for a topic outstrips supply!

The advantage is that the person looking for a topic would find
everything in one place. The disadvantage is that a patron doesn't
understand why they can't take out the Ref book (really big, colorful
REF labels would help solve that problem). I think that the PL in New
Hartford does it Ref and Circ together.

I would like to share thoughts about this topic, too. Could we continue
to discuss openly on the list?

My first thought was wow! neat idea. Then, I thought about instances
where I would want to use an almanac , for example. Suppose I was
seeking the population of CT...I would probably use the almanac for
that...but if the almanac was kept with the CT books, then I would not
be able to find similar information for MA and CA etc.

So with that in mind, I wonder if integrating really general reference
works is such a good idea! It sounds to me more like making reference
collections into "Ready Reference" and eliminating other, more specific
works like encyclopedia of science would be in the 500s instead of in
the reference collection.

Has anyone done this?

Non-Fiction??Thoughts...

Hi,

Are there any public libraries in Connecticut that have shelved their
Reference

Collection among it's Non-Fiction Collection??

If your library has done this, do you like it??

How do your patrons like it???

I know that one downside is that a patron may take over a intershelved
reference

book over to the circulation desk to check it out and then learn that it
must stay

in the library. Result being a unhappy patron.

We are in the thinking stages of this at the Whittemore Library and want

to hear the pros and cons.

Can anyone lead us to any recently published article(s) on this
subject???

Thanks..
