About the Opera

Giacomo Puccini's Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) was created as the
"heavenly" part of an opera trilogy, that included Il Tabarro (The Cloak)
and Gianni Schicchi. These three show, in turn, harsh realism, sentiment
and calmness, and villainous farce, an innovative theatrical idea.

This film of Suor Angelica includes a radiant Renata Scotto as Angelica the
nun, who sings the famous aria "Senza mamma o bimbo tu sei morto," with
happiness, anger, sadness, resignation, and love. The wicked princess
(Angelica's aunt) who tells Angelica about her love child's death, provides
a commentary about judgment, untempered by mercy.
