Introduction To Using Your Community's Demographic Data
The workshop is an overview of census data available to librarians and media specialists planning services for patrons in their communities. In this hands-on workshop we will learn how to access and analyze census data to better serve our patrons and community. Looking at this data can help us learn the answers to these questions and others:
How many people in our community are foreign born?
What languages do they speak in the home?
How many are seniors? How many are children?
What is their educational level?
Our workshop leader will be Nancy Peluso, Federal Documents Librarian at the Connecticut State Library. Nancy has worked for the State Library for more than 20 years. As a reference librarian, she has extensive experience in working on census related questions with the public and other librarians. She conducts hands-on workshops on federal and state agency websites, as well as navigating census.gov, for librarians across the state. Mrs. Peluso also conducts training sessions for state agency employees on how to use the State Library webpage.
If you are curious about a particular census related question, just email Nancy (npeluso at cslib.org) with the subject line "Demographic Data Workshop" and she'll be sure to include it in the discussion.
