Sounds good to me; I entered the barcode in our system as Stolen Bristol
card with a block. le

A shared list sounds like a wise idea.

Subject: [Conntech] Stolen Library Card
Hi to All -
This is a message shared with all on the list with hopes of preventing
loss of materials from other libraries:
We received a call this morning from someone who had received an "almost
due" e-mail from our CONNECT system regarding five dvds checked out at
South Windsor PL. The caller, not a South Windsor resident, said his
card had been "lost" (or stolen) in his wallet a few weeks ago. He had
cancelled bank cards, etc., but forgot the library card was in there, so
it hadn't been reported to his hometown library. Since he thought
everything had been taken care of, he hadn't reported it to the Police,
either.
He reported this to us before most of the items were due, so we've
flagged them and will note if they're returned. From his conversation,
our Circ Supervisor believes there's little chance he'll feel any
responsibility for the lost materials if they don't come back.
But---in the past several months, we've experienced a couple of
incidents where bearers of stolen library cards seem to have
intentionally borrowed from a large number of libraries in various
networks in a very short period of time. In the interest of preventing
that from happening again, we'd like you to be aware of the potential
problem if someone attempts to use:
BRISTOL PUBLIC LIBRARY borrower's card 22519 022427 457. Please ask to
see an ID matching the card before use.
CONNECT libraries would find the card barred and a note attached.
I spoke with Sharon Brettschneider at the State Library before posting
this information. We wondered if there would be interest in a statewide
list for Circulation staff? If all the networks have Circ lists, these
could perhaps be linked, but a statewide list would include stand-alone
libraries. We'll be interested in knowing how you'd like this type of
information to be shared.
