Hello all,
On the evening of December 16, I attended the first of a series
of "Town Hall Meetings" held by NBC Channel 30 WVIT-TV. The Channel
30 News Department is holding these meetings around the state in
order to find out what it is doing right and what it is doing wrong,
and for its newscasters, managers, and support staff to hear directly
from viewers.
During the meeting, there was some discussion about newscasters
referring viewers to the Channel 30 Web site for more information and
the question came up about access to the Internet. It was a good
time to remind attendees that most public libraries offer free access
to the Internet for people who either cannot afford it or do not want
it in their home. I did just that, and I asked news anchor Jerry
Brooks, who led the meeting, to periodically announce the
availability of Internet access at local public libraries when he
refers viewers to the Web site. He said he would do that.
HOWEVER, there were all kinds of interesting (and some
not-so-interesting) things that came up during the meeting, so I
suggest that librarians attend a Channel 30 Town Hall Meeting when
one is held in your area and use the opportunity to ask the TV
station to remind viewers about free Internet access at their local
library. They could do this when a news anchor refers viewers to the
Channel 30 Web site.
By the way, the session was fun to attend. It only lasted
about 90 minutes or so. The on-screen and off-screen people from
Channel 30 were pleasant and seemed genuinely interested in
explaining what they do and hearing questions and ideas from the audience.
