[Conntech] Do libraries in CT offer Notary Public services?

David,

Avon Library had 3 Reference librarians who offered Notary service for over
ten years, and it was very popular with our patrons. However, the word
spread and it was getting to be very time consuming. There were also
occasional documents we couldn't notarize, such as financial guarantees, and
it got touchy at times. When our Town Clerk, who notarized for years,
retired the new Town Clerk did not want their office to do them any more, so
all that business came to the library. It got to be too much, and also for
liability reasons (our Director consulted with the Town Attorney) the
Library Board decided to stop offering this service when the Town did (also
for time and liability reasons).

We knew our patrons would be upset, so one of our Reference staff called all
the local banks and agencies and made a list of who offers Notary service in
Town, and their addresses, phone #s and hours. We can pass out the list to
patrons if they come in, or refer them over the phone. Luckily, the bank
across the street from us offers the service, so we refer patrons there most
of the time. It's a nice service to offer if you can keep it on a small
scale.

Subject: [Conntech] Do libraries in CT offer Notary Public services?

When I think of Notary Public services and where they are offered, I first
think of banks, town halls, and title offices.

Having libraries offer notary services (especially during the evening after
5pm) might be a win-win situation for libraries and patrons as banks, etc.
are closed. This could be yet another way to get patrons who don't
typically visit the library in the door.

Just out of curiosity, does your library have a Notary on staff?

Regards,
