Beginning Wednesday, October 1, 2008 the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center will
temporarily limit access to the Stowe Center Research Library collections
while undertaking an extensive climate control and preservation project in
the Library Vault.

 

This project, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities
and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, will protect the Stowe
Center's irreplaceable museum and library collections and enhance access to
these materials.  The Library collection includes rare and hard-to-find
material on 19th-century America including over 12,000 books, 4, 000
pamphlets, 180,000 manuscript items and 12,000 images.

 

It is anticipated that work will be completed by January 2010.  

 

During this project, researchers are invited to schedule appointments for
access to the digitized version of the E. Bruce Kirkham Collection of
Harriet Beecher Stowe's letters; the Stowe Center's extensive card
catalogue; and selected images. Other archival materials will be temporarily
unavailable.   The Museum collections will continue to be accessible by

During this period, the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center will remain open for
tours of the Stowe House and a complete menu of programs and events,
including the popular Salons at Stowe Series.  The Stowe Visitor Center will
be fully operational, with the Museum Shop and Exhibit Gallery open for
visitors.
