I've had the pleasure of talking quite a bit recently with Walter
Atkinson, who is an associate of John Deakin, about proper leaning
procedures. These guys have amassed an extraordinary amount of
actual scientific analysis on running engines by actually studying
them on test stands, as opposed to guessing. They have dispelled a
lot of myths for me.
Walter hangs out on several email lists, such as the Beech and Mooney
ones, and is willing to discuss engine issues with anybody. This
particular article is full of good stuff, but one thing as Corvair
drivers you need to realize is that trying to run lean of peak is
difficult with a carbureted engine. Most of the LOP operation is
going to require injection, and balanced injectors at that. On the
other hand, since you are building the engine yourself, you may be
able to achieve a more balanced fuel-air ratio than Lycoming does
when it cranks out another engine on the assembly line.
There are a handful of people in aviation these days who take a
scientific approach to their craft. They don't just regurgitate what
Lycoming and Cessna have been proclaiming for 50 years, but take a
methodical and objective approach to advancing the state of knowledge
in their area. I consider John Deakin and Walter Atkinson to be in
the same class as Bob Nuckolls and William Wynne in that
regard. Listen to what they have to say, look at their actual data,
and consider the possibility that "if 5 million people say a stupid
thing, it is still a stupid thing" when it comes to old wives' tales
and old mechanic's tales.
