OK guys I know this is going to make some of you mad, but I have some other thoughts on parts. I have several older cars, when I need parts I go to Autozone and get some knockoff parts. There are OEM parts, but my experience is that they cost more and perform about the same as the knock off. I buy the knock off. I guess the general opinion of me is that I am unethical because I don’t get the OEM stuff and pay for the R and D. I know most of you guys think WW is the corvair OEM. Perhaps he is. I think WW seems to realize this OEM knockoff issue better than his supporters, that’s why there is the new better OEM gold hub. I like his idea, his news design. I am jealous. We bought his plans and made the old one with the larger pulley. Constant improvement and building better parts is how he stays ahead. The only issue in his business plan is can he recover his R and D cost and make a living on a given part before a knock off comes out?
We’ve been slowly putting our project together over 3 years and have a few more to go. When we got started we bought WW manual. It was, is, great. I never expected to buy parts and anything else from him. Just a set of plans. His business grew. His ideas, philosophy, were accepted, his business has gown and he has developed a loyal fan base. Good for him. What a country! Now he even sells part for those who need or want them. People copy good ideas. People buy generic drugs. (That’s why there are patents, if you go that route ) It seems to me WW is in the idea and education business and he is growing his business the way he wants to. To some extent this demand for parts and improved products has even hurt the education business. Take for example this new hub. It looks great, but I hope the latest version of the manual has the drawings for the old hub as well. The old hub worked and we made one, and without C an C machining. We can afford our project
and have fun with it, if we can make our own parts. That’s why we bought the manual and the corvair education. When necessary to we don’t hesitate to buy parts from him (reworked distributor etc). But we would rather make them ourselves. At the most basic level the corvair conversion business, is like any human endeavor, it is improved by competition. Jeff may be a joke or a jerk. Either way, in the long run, he is good for business. phill
