I'm just saying that, from my observations, sometimes even the
TINIEST of alterations can have a major effect. The most mundane
things you would consider to be irrelevant to the operation of the
engine may end up costing you a lot of time and effort. We throw
around ideas on here as if they were simple mods. When you look at
the amount of time and trouble some of the simple things cost the GM
engineers during the development of the engine, it is staggering. I
bought the Corvair SAE papers long ago and read through them. Very
interesting to see how many years of testing were required to get
temperatures and materials right. I think it's called 140c and
available from Corvair suppliers.
One other thing that has not been pointed out in a long while is
this: if you are making your own custom engine, check with your
insurance agent to see if you are going to be able to get insurance
for it. The last I heard, Falcon was only writing insurance on
Corvair powerplants if William Wynne himself had produced a
firewall-forward package for that airframe. Insurance may not matter
to you, but it might if you are not willing to risk losing everything.
