Clare,
Whether retention is a moot point or not, the snap ring adds no weight as it
replaces the metal removed when cutting the groove, it has no negative
effect on the crank and doesn't get in the way of my setup so there is no
reason not to install it, if for no other reason but the peace of mind it
offers. Also, I am not using a redrive but rather an external bearing hub to
hold a direct drive shaft that plugs into the splines of the clutch plate
thereby removing all thrust loads from the crank.
