This is pretty much what I thought as well. It reinforces my belief that the
ignition should be divorced from the oil pump if at all possible. Just think
what would have happened to Mark J if the distributor drive gear had sheared
its pin at the moment he noticed the high oil temp, etc just after take off.
Both ignitions would have been rendered useless even though there was
nothing wrong with either of them. They would have taken him home though if
they were still working. Luck was on your side Mark!!
I know the dizzy is a reliable piece of equipment but safe flight is
starting to count on too many factors in series with each other. You have
the dizzy drive gear pin, the rotor, the dizzy cap, one single HT lead, the
coil joiner, in most cases a common power supply and single plugs. Apart
from the plugs, if any one of the others fail both ignitions will be taken
out. Just some food for thought.
