You guys can file this under “ too smart by half”. A few months back we
acquired our John Deere dynamo and voltage regulator. In the quest for more
power in the Space Shuttle we’re building we were able to buy the 35 amp heavy
duty 3 phase version. It has the same external dimensions as the 20 amp part
(so I m told, it looks the same in photos) The dynamo is John Deere part
number AM880339 and the regulator is AM877958. We got these parts from to
separate third parties, not the dealer. The only difference between the single
phase standard 20 amp version and the 3 phase is that the 3 phase has three
wires which go to the regulator. We believe either our regulator or dynamo is
toast. But we need output specifications of the dynamo to be sure. It seems the
John Deere dealers in North Carolina are not as filled with Southern Hospitality
( or general knowledge) and genteelness as those in the deep south. So I ask,
does anyone know the output specification of this 3 phase dynamo at a given
speed? If not, how about the output voltage of the single phase 20 amp version.
Both information would be helpful and an asset to the archives. Three phase
units should produce the same voltage measured at any two leads. To work the
voltage must be more than the battery charging voltage but how much? Large
modern motorcycles have the 3 phase units, some of which generate up to 65
volts AC which is converted by the regulator/rectifier to 14 volts DC. Any insight
 would be helpful to all.

Thanks phill
