I have a Dellorto side draft carb on my VW powered
Sonerai. It works fine, but does not have mixture
control which is OK by me for my Sonerai. The good
thing is that they are basically infinitely tuneable.
Mine is the 40mm body and I have 28mm veturi's
installed if I remember right. If I ever need parts
for it I will probably replace it. A while back I
needed some jets for it because I changed my exhaust
which changed my mixture drastically and I couldn't
find a supplier in the USA. I had some smaller jets
and wound up buying a set of jet reamers to do what I
needed. I haven't looked lately, but like I said, if
I ever need parts for it I may wind up putting on a
different carb if the parts aren't available. The
only minor problem operationally is that the engine
runs a little richer on one side because I have it set
up where the right throat feed the right cylinders and
the left throat feeds the left cylinders. Other than
that, once I did some tuning it works fine. You do
need to understand how they work and how to set them
up. As it sits now, I changed the venturis, main
jets, air correction jets, and emmulsion tubes from
what came in the box.
If you can't find a place to get parts, I would
personally opt for another carb. Like I said though
it works fine. BTW my VW is 2275cc which is about 35
cu. in. per cylinder compared to the stock corvair 27
cu-in per cyinder.
