Volunteers
Needed for October Oyster Shell Projects
Oysters
improve the water quality of Tampa Bay!
Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers
to build an oyster shell bar
to restore the shoreline of Maximo Park
on Thursday, October 8. We've
already recruited enough volunteers for Friday, October
9 and Saturday, October 10. Click on date to
register for the project. The meeting
location is Maximo Park, 34th St. & Pinellas
Point Dr. S. in St.
Petersburg. The minimum age
to participate is 15 years old.
We are also recruiting volunteers to build an
oyster shell bar to restore the shoreline of
MacDill AFB on Wednesday, October 21, Thursday, October 22 and
Friday, October 23. Click on
date to register for the project. We'll need some
personal information from you in the registration
process: your middle initial, the
state who issued your driver's license,
driver's license number & the expiration date of
your license for MacDill's security clearance. The
minimum age for volunteers is 18 years old for this
project. You must have a valid
driver’s license, vehicle registration and car
insurance to drive onto the base.
Oyster shell projects
involve shoveling fossilized shell into mesh bags, transporting the
bags to the project site and
placing oyster shell bags on the shoreline to create
a series of oyster bars. It is
pretty physical labor with oyster shellbags weighing around 30 pounds
each. The goal is to restore lost habitat systems
to the bay, prevent further erosion of the
shoreline and improve water quality through natural
biological filtration.

Help
Build Oyster Domes at Tampa Bay Watch!
October
12, 19 & 26 from 9am - noon on each day
Tampa Bay
Watch is recruiting 10-20 hard-working volunteers to
help build oyster domes
at our Marine Center, 3000 Pinellas Bayway S in Tierra
Verde. The project takes place on specified weekday
mornings from 9
am until noon.
The minimum age to participate in this project is 16
years old. The project involves pouring marine-friendly
concrete into fiberglass molds to create oysterdomes and taking apart the molds
that were previously poured.
Oyster domes are constructed onsite at
regular intervals throughout the year in preparation for
placement in Tampa Bay
to minimize shoreline erosion and provide surface area
for oysters to attach.
Additionally, by being placed along seawalls and
shorelines, the domes restore
hard bottom habitat and improve water quality. Read more here!

Adopt a Monotube!
Volunteers
Needed
Help us keep discarded monofilament fishing line
out of Tampa Bay! Discarded fishing line can be very
dangerous to birds, marine life, and even boats - it is
estimated fishing line will last 400-600 years in the
environment before it begins to break down. You can help
by adopting a
monofilament recycling tube,
AKA monotube, at one of
these popular fishing locations listed
below.Adoption involves
monitoring your tube twice a
month depending on the location. Once collected
the fishing line is sent to Berkley Fishing, where it is
recycled into tackle boxes or other fishing equipment,
as well as fish habitats!
Sites that need monitoring:
Fort De Soto Bay Pier, R.E. Olds Fishing Pier in
Oldsmar and the Pinellas side of the Courtney Campbell
Causeway.
