For those who are interested, Dr Lowenthal's article was entitled Medical Center Worker Preplacement Screening: A Follow-Up Study

The abstract of the article, which is available at journals.lww.com/joem/toc/1986/06000, read:

Two hundred consecutive new employees were given a comprehensive preplacement health evaluation and another 200 were given a minimal evaluation. The status of the groups was evaluated in a retrospective chart review 2 to 4 years after hire and the longevity of employment, reason for termination, workers' compensation claims experience, and utilization of health care resources were evaluated. There was no significant difference between the two groups. Comprehensive preplacement evaluation for medical center employees is not a cost-effective activity.
