We do what you currently do—have NPs and PAs (and occasionally MDs) do the majority of the exams, although we also allow the RNs to do the clearances when there
are no red flags, especially when we are shorthanded on providers (vacations, high volume, etc.). I don’t see a problem with using RNs as long as they have clear guidelines on what they should not be clearing. The only potential problem that I see is if you
prove that you don’t need providers and then don’t have enough coverage for the visit types that do require a provider such as the work injuries.

Hello all
As with many of our health care systems, we are asked to use resources wisely. I am interested in what you EHS does for pre-placement evaluations. We have traditionally had
NP’s do the exams. We have the RN;s do the paper clearances for certain positions, with referral to the NP for red flags.
We are thinking about having RN’s perform the basic exam and defer to the NP or MD when there are questions.
