Question: How does this form of communication protect staff rights to HIPAA?  I either call or email staff direct.  I notify  director if employee needs to be dismissed and also when cleared to return to work as does our workman’s comp for return to work. Example: such as with shingles or chickenpox.

What is the mechanism used for the Sharepoint?

We do the same with the addition of a secured Sharepoint for the managers to populate with exposed staff names. Then the Occ Health nurses use that to communicate clearance status back to

Managers and Infection Control. This certainly doesn't eliminate additional emails and phone calls, but it helps.

Infection Prevention sends an e-mail to the department manager(s) including confirmation of organism, date(s) of exposure, locations and definition of exposure along with a tracking tool and instructions for the manager to include the names of employees meeting the aforementioned criteria and to follow up at Occupational Health.  This works great 95 % of the times except 4 pm on a  Friday when phone calls are added.

We send notification to all relevant managers and they are responsible for contacting their staff via their call back tree.  We also have an alert flag on the first age of our intranet that has a message such at “pertussis exposure alert: units 8c, ER, Transport Respiratory etc., Contact Occupational health @ 88899”

We send notification to all.

Ask that managers ensure that all either receive the email or are called if they are not at work.
