We have a male RN in our ICU who is insisting on growing an extremely long beard. He has been growing this for the past few months. Our policy calls for neatly close trimmed beards. At first when he was contacted, by infection control, he stated he would do whatever was necessary and if needed would obey the policy but then mentioned he knew of an locum physician in anesthesia who had a beard and wore a beard cover. It was noted that this physician had a beard due to religious reasons. Now this week he is insisting he is keeping his beard for “religious reasons “and states “you cannot ask me anything about it.” I know that we do accommodate for religion however I also know that he did not mention religion two weeks ago. Has anyone encountered this problem before?
