Did you run sharing of Employee Health records with patient records with legal? OSHA and EEOC make it very clear that there should be a separation between health info obtained as an employee and health info
as an individual patient.
According to a recently released opinion letter by the DOL’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), employers must ensure that strict confidentiality and separation is provided to personnel records
containing personal medical information, and that occupational health information must not be intermingled in an electronic health record (EHR) of an individual patient.

We are using Cerner as our EMR for Employee Health. We ended up using a one lifetime encounter for our EH visits and our WC creates a new encounter for each injury/illness based on DOI. WC then discharges them
when the case is closed, although she does have the ability to re-open it, if needed.
We are able to share information on immunizations throughout the system, so for flu, if you got it at the MD’s office we could see it and if EH adm the vaccine, the MD’s office can see it.
We just started in July and we’ve learned a lot about Cerner’s capability and limitations – can’t do surveys of staff, can’t upload information (i.e. flu shots, had to all be charted individually).

We are in the build phase but have not implemented yet. So far we have learned some useful functionality:

You can designate “sensitive encounters” when the appointment is made, which places everything associated with that visit (appointment information, notes, vitals, labs, orders) visible to only your
access group.
·
You can designate “sensitive notes” which would keep a specific note hidden but not the entire encounter.
·
Some chart elements are tied to the patient rather than the encounter and cannot be hidden from certain users. This includes medications, problem list, demographics.
·
Employees can be designated with a patient type that will trigger a pop-up box before anyone – inside emp/occ health or outside it – can access that record. The viewer must give their reason for accessing
(“break the glass” feature.) This can be configured by dept/area to some degree and can be easily audited.

When we investigated last year there was no employee health or occ health module, no means to track OSHA logs or lost work time or do sharps logs. No way to segregate the records so that the hospital employees
could not see the workers comp records.
Perhaps there is progress now

They do not when I spoke to them 3 months ago they said they were working on it and they ‘could build it’. But that is what they said a year ago too and no word on cost.
