***MLP.org and MLPnews: your source for daily General Assembly news updates

General Assembly starts on June 15, and this year we'll be continuing a
practice that we started at the previous General Assembly in 2004, which
is to provide a daily news summary and update on our web site at the end
of each day of GA. Updates will come from MLP's General Assembly ground
team in Birmingham, with special attention to details about More Light /
LGBT equality issues and MLP's activities at General Assembly. If
there's breaking news, we'll share that immediately at www.mlp.org and
via email to this MLPnews email list. If you have friends who'd like to
subscribe to MLPnews, have them go to www.mlp.org and use the signup bar
at the top of the web page.

"It's OVERTIME!" - MLP releases new print resource, "Voices of LGBTA
Presbyterians"

MLP is pleased to announce the release of a new resource just in time
for General Assembly: / Voices of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender
and Allied Presbyterians
<http://www.mlp.org/resources/voices-of-lgbta-2006.pdf>/. The two-page
resource contains selected brief stories and quotes in support of the
immediate deletion of G-6.0106b and other anti-LGBT Presbyterian rules.
The 16 stories and quotations in the document are all taken from
responses to our Call to Justice: Right Now
<http://www.mlp.org/rightnow> petition that we announced a few months
ago. The /Voices/ document is one step of several that MLP is taking to
make sure that your voices are heard as we heard towards General
Assembly, and beyond. A text copy of the /Voices/ handout appears in
the full article
<http://www.mlp.org/article.php?story=20060518000407721> on our web
site, or you can download and print the PDF version
<http://www.mlp.org/resources/voices-of-lgbta-2006.pdf>, which is
designed to fit onto both sides of a single sheet of paper.

*Voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied Presbyterians*
/Comments collected by More Light Presbyterians, spring 2006, in support
of the removal of G-6.0106b and related anti-gay Presbyterian policies./

"I am an elder and deacon in the Presbyterian Church. About two years
ago, I also came out as being a transgender person. I am a child of God
and Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. It is time to give me equal
standing in the Presbyterian Church."
- Mike/Michelle Dennis, Los Angeles, CA

Sharing your stories: MLP sends pre-GA letter to all 690 commissioners

As part of our efforts to share your stories -- real stories of LGBT
Presbyterians -- with this year's General Assembly commissioners, MLP
has just completed a mass mailing to all 690 commissioners, Youth
Advisory Delegates (YADs), and related representatives who will be at GA
in a voting or advisory capacity. Here you can see a picture of a
portion of the mailing, signed, sealed, stamped, and ready to mail. Each
letter contains a cover letter, a copy of MLP's General Assembly
Legislative Recommendations
<http://www.mlp.org/article.php?story=20060513140818147>, and a copy of
our recently-released Voices of LGBT and Allied Presbyterians
<http://www.mlp.org/article.php?story=20060518000407721> educational and
storytelling piece.

And the postcards came rolling in...

Because some churches organized their More Light Sunday activities for
the weeks prior to June 11, we've already received hundreds of "Right
Now / Write Now" postcards
<http://www.mlp.org/article.php?story=20060504113540727> from
delete-B-now supporters around the country... enough that we've started
to wonder whether we've got a large enough post office box to handle the
cards that will arrive this week. Every postcard that we receive this
week will go to our MLP ground team in Birmingham, Alabama and will be
delivered to one of the voting GA commissioners. Thanks to all of our
More Light Sunday churches and other postcard distributors this year,
for filling up our mailbox with calls for justice... Right Now!

MLP events at the 217th General Assembly
/A similar version of this article originally appeared in our print
publication, the More Light Update./

The table is open to all at the many MLP-sponsored events during this
year's General Assembly, beginning with the *annual MLP celebration
reception and dinner* on Thursday evening une 15. "Letters from a
Birmingham Assembly" will be the theme as we celebrate 32 years of
working for the full embrace of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
persons in our Church and the world.

On Sunday morning June 18 we will worship together at the *national
welcoming Presbyterians' worship service*, sponsored jointly by More
Light Presbyterians and That All May Freely Serve (TAMFS), to be held at

Reconcilation Course, Ghost Ranch Abiquiu, July 17 - 23

The extraordinary peace and justice-oriented Plowshares Institute is
offering a course "Becoming Agents of Reconciliation" focusing upon how
Presbyterians and other persons of faith can develop insight and skills
in becoming more effective "agents of reconciliation" within their
families, faith communities and denominations. A key area the training
will focus upon how to address the injustice that LGBT persons and our
families face in faith communities and how to work for change.

Welcome to House of Grace, A More Light Fellowship/
from our field organizer Michael Adee./

The National MLP Board of Directors and I are pleased to welcome "House
of Grace" Fellowship to the national network of welcoming and affirming
congregations, new church developments, house churches, regional MLP
Chapters in cities and on seminary campuses, and affiliated Presbyterian
campus ministries. House of Grace is recognized as a More Light
Fellowship by the Presbytery of Newton, Randolph, New Jersey. This
fellowship is indeed in the early Christian tradition, a "house church"
enjoying the hospitality of meeting in homes of the House of Grace'
members who host the gatherings on particular Sunday evenings. *

*International Day Against Homophobia
by Michael Adee

May 17 was the second annual observance of the International Day Against
Homophobia. This global effort is supported by ILGA, the International
Lesbian and Gay Association <http://www.ilga.org/>, among other groups.
ILGA was created in 1978, the very same year the first Presbyterian
congregation declared itself "More Light," sanctuary, a safe, welcoming
and affirming space for gays, lesbians and their families. That first
church to offer such life-giving and life-saving ministry and witness is
the West Park Presbyterian Church, New York City. Now we understand the
need for sanctuary for bisexual and transgender persons, too, of course.*

Profile: one Presbyterian who changed his mind
/Our field organizer Michael Adee spotted this article (extracts below)
about former PCUSA moderator Jack Rogers and how his mind has changed on
LGBT equality./

"Presbyterian leader has written that homosexuality is not a sin and
should not be a bar to ordination," writes Richmond, VA Times-Dispatch
staff writer Alberta Lindsey. Lindsey's interview with the former PCUSA
Moderator, the Rev. Jack Rogers and her article get to the heart of the
matter that faces our beloved Presbyterian Church (USA) next month in
Birmingham. Excerpts from the article follow this report. I find it
ironic that it is an article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch that
quotes Jack Rogers this time since our last General Assembly was in
Richmond. Lindsey's article ends with this quotation from the
distinguished theologian, scholar, author and former Moderator Rogers:
"When we use the proper methods of biblical interpretation and return to
the fundamental teachings of Jesus -- love God and love your neighbor --
God will be able to heal our divisions." *

More Light Tour Across Arkansas
/from our field organizer Michael Adee/

Hello from Little Rock, Arkansas. Thanks to the vision and support of
Arthur Fullerton, Elder, West Hollywood Presbyterian Church, West
Hollywood, CA, and a native of Warren, Arkansas, a remarkable first-ever
"More Light Tour" across Arkansas is possible, supporting LGBT persons
and allies, and making way for change in this southern state. Many
months ago, Arthur pitched this idea to me since he grew up in Arkansas
and I grew up in nearby Louisiana that we do a More Light Tour Across
Arkansas. In partnership with Greg Adams, the MLP Liaision for Arkansas,
and Rev. Dr. Leslie Belden, a Minister-Member of Arkansas Presbytery,
outreach in 4 cities anchored this historic first "More Light Tour"
across the state. *

*More Light Sunday news and reports*
*
* More Light Sunday breaks records: 52 churches participate this year

From Alaska to Florida, the More Light Sunday
<http://www.mlp.org/morelightsunday> signups flowed in, sometimes with
multiple signups per day. With a total 2006 participation of *52
churches*, More Light Sunday church participation this year has far
surpassed last year's participation of 36 churches, and has grown by
450% over participation in 2004
<http://www.mlp.org/article.php?story=20060326152548400>, the first year
of More Light Sunday. Demand for our "Right Now / Write Now" postcards
<http://www.mlp.org/article.php?story=20060504113540727> was so high
that we had to double our original print run, and our DVD production had
to go into overtime to send each participating church a copy of this
year's special-release More Light Sunday DVD. This level of
participation is a testament to the growing grass roots strength of the
More Light movement, and to all of you working hard within your
churches, your communities, and your Presbyteries for real change. Our
thanks go out to everyone taking action this year for More Light Sunday:
to the local coordinators who signed up your churches for participation;
to the house party hosts; to everyone who signed our petition
<http://www.mlp.org/rightnow>, made a donation
<https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=7550>, or filled out a
postcard <http://www.mlp.org/article.php?story=20060504113540727>. Our
voices are making a difference, and will be heard loud and clear at
General Assembly this year.

Morelight Sunday Mailing Mania

The large number of churches signed up to participate in More Light
Sunday <http://www.mlp.org/morelightsunday> means a lot of materials to
ship all over the country. Here's an look at the pre-assembly stage of
our More Light Sunday resource kits, with bundles of "Right Now"
postcards, MLP worship bulletin inserts, DVDs, VHS tapes, and other
resources just before they get packed up and shipped to this year's
participating churches.

First Palo Alto joins San Jose pride parade

For the third year running, First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto
<http://www.fprespa.org> (California) offered its signature parking lot
worship service in the assembly area for the annual San Jose gay pride
parade <http://www.sjgaypride.com/>, then joined the parade as an
official contingent. The photo shows the First Palo Alto crew assembled
on the main street at the start of the parade.

The local More Light team at First Presbyterian also organizes a booth
at the San Jose pride festival, held the same weekend as the parade. The
booth features activities for kids, displays of pro-LGBT books and other
materials, and friendly church volunteers who can talk to pride fair
attendees about First Palo Alto and its stance as a More Light church.

Southside Church, Tucson... plus More Light cats
/Received from More Light Sunday coordinator Leslie Carlson at Southside
Presbyterian <http://www.southsidepresbyterian.org/>, Tucson Arizona./

We had a good More Light Sunday at Southside Presbyterian Church in
Tucson, Arizona. We had an excellent sermon and a Minute for Mission.
The pictures taken during the service didn't turn out well, and so I
have substituted instead, two "More Light Cats" pictures. I'm also
sending our Open Doors pictures.

More Light Sunday in Houston
/Received from More Light Sunday coordinator Sheryle Webb in Houston./

I am sending pictures from A Community of the Servant-Savior
Presbyterian Church <http://www.servant-savior.org/> in Houston, Texas.
We are the 100th Church to become More Light. For More Light Sunday, we
prepared a special worship service including special music and hymns. We
announced the Post Cards "Right Now" during our Minute for Mission, and
had the members sign them after worship. The Reverend Helen Bailey
officiated over the worship service. We are making plans now to
participate in the Houston Pride parade on June 24th. The first picture
is the group of us with the Reverend Helen Bailey. The second picture is
of a young woman, Jacinda Valencia, signing one of the postcards - she
shared some special music with us during worship. We gave her a safe
place to stay when her life was in danger when she told her family she
was a lesbian. The third picture is of our pianist, Jan VanDerbur
signing one of the postcards, she and her partner have been members here
for several years.

Montclair Presbyterian (Oakland, California)
/Received from More Light Sunday coordinator David Stephenson of
Montclair Presbyterian <http://www.mpcfamily.org/>, Oakland California./

Montclair Presbyterian Church had the joyous honor of guest preacher
Lisa Larges giving us the sermon "3 for the World" on More Light Sunday.
Lisa is an out lesbian candidate for ministry in the Presbyterian Church
and dearly loved by our congregation. We were serenaded by the beautiful
voices of The Continuum, a guest choir from the Emmy-award winning
Pacific Boychoir Academy. Rev. Janie Spahr and family graced our church
with their presence. Lori Kendall, chair of our More Light Committee,
was our lay leader. Lori brought us the word of God with the scripture
readings: Isaiah 6:1-8 and John 3:1-17. We sang the hymns: "Holy, Holy,
Holy", "Though the Spirit's Gifts are Many", and "Help Us Accept Each
Other". We prayed this prayer together:

/Received from More Light Sunday coordinator Carol Merrit of Western
Presbyterian Church <http://www.westernpresbyterian.org/>, Washington DC./

*"The Power to Bless and to Curse"*
Carol Howard Merritt
Western Presbyterian Church
June 11, 2006
Text: James 3:5b-12

I am sitting in the pew of a Charismatic church, wanting to hear one
thing: I need to know that I am loved. I am a grown woman, but I feel
like a little kid. My grandmother just died and as the undeniable
matriarch of our family, she left a huge, gaping hole, and I am swimming
in it. A bit disoriented, I need that raft: I need to know that my
granny loves me and I need to know that God loves me. *

Collenbrook United (Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania)
/Received from More Light Sunday coordinator Nancy Crody of Collenbrook
United Church <http://www.collenbrook.org/>, Drexel Hill, PA/

Collenbrook United Church <http://www.collenbrook.org/>, Drexel Hill,
PA, is a U.C.C. and PCUSA union church, hence both UCC Open and
Affirming <http://www.ucccoalition.org/programs/ona.html> and More
Light. We have primarily emphasized the ONA aspect, so decided this year
to observe More Light Sunday. Following the sermon, we had about a
five-minute "Message for Ministry" that I did, discussing what "More
Light" meant and inviting our folks to sign the postcards. More than
half the adults present did so, so we're putting 20 cards into the mail
to Mountain View today. Best wishes for your work at General Assembly!

Pittsburgh's More Light Sunday/Weekend 2006
/From our field organizer Michael Adee./

Hello from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and a fabulous (yes, fabulous)
Pittsburgh More Light Sunday & Weekend 2006. Those Pittsburghers are
dedicated Steeler-Pirate sports fans, no question. And, in addition to
being passionate about their local professional ballteams, the
Presbyterians I had the joy and privilege of being with this weekend are
passionate about justice, ending discrimination against LGBT persons
while creating safe, loving and welcoming spaces within their families,
congregations and communities. Community House Presbyterian Church, a
More Light Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh hosted the regional More
Light Sunday 2006 afternoon worship celebration and luncheon. An
overflow crowd, a Gospel Choir and special gospel music, drumming,
rainbow kites and stoles were highlights of this remarkable city-wide
gathering to celebrate the gifts and ministries of lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender persons and their families.*

Celebration of Life Presbyterian (Mesa, AZ)
/Received from More Light Sunday coordinator Shelly Moe at Celebration
of Life Presbyterian Church <http://www.celebration-of-life.org/> in
Mesa, AZ./

Our More Light worship service featured a beautiful display of candles
on our Communion table, bringing more light to our sanctuary. The
service included liturgy and hymns made available through the resources
of the More Light network. Our worship bulletins included the More Light
flyers and the "Right Now" postcards, which members filled out. Rev.
Shelly Moe, the pastor of Celebration of Life, will hand carry the
postcards to Birmingham later this week. Her sermon was based on a
reading from the Song of Songs, and spoke of this often overlooked book
of the Bible as a counter balance to many of the other messages about
human sexuality that are found in scripture. The service concluded in
typical CoL fashion - with a party!*
