From MEngels at cslib.org Fri Aug 1 05:56:48 2008 From: MEngels at cslib.org (Mary Engels) Date: Fri Aug 1 05:54:39 2008 Subject: [Conntech] Weeding workshops - there's still space Message-ID: <4892CFCF.1A3E.008E.0@cslib.org> Hi All, Our August and September weeding workshops are filling up but there's still space if you'd like to attend. Below is my original post about the workshops with sign up instructions. The State Library is pleased to announce that once again we are offering the ever popular workshop "Weeding in the Garden of Good and Evil". If you know that you've got to weed your collection but would rather have a root canal than actually remove items from your library, this is the workshop for you. Come one come all to: Weeding in the Garden of Good and Evil Or Less is More Weeding your library?s collection can be a daunting task but it is a critical component to providing excellent library service to your community. This hands-on workshop will give you the tools and enthusiasm that you will need to assess your collection and make decisions on what material needs to be weeded out of it. Our approach to weeding is that it isn?t the irresponsible disposal of the library?s property, but rather a part of the public service to borrowers, that of maintaining the best possible collection for the community. The workshop will cover: ? The purpose of weeding ? Criteria for weeding decisions ? The mechanics of weeding ? Developing a weeding policy ? Resources for disposal of weeded material ? Practice weeding Each participant will receive a copy of the CREW Method: Expanded Guidelines for Collection Evaluation and Weeding for Small and Medium-sized Public Libraries Workshop Presenters are Mary Engels, Director, Connecticut State Library, Middletown Library Service Center and Linda Williams, Children?s Consultant, Connecticut State Library, Willimantic Library Service Center For more information on workshop content contact: Mary Engels, mengels@cslib.org. It is my understanding this is a new program Mr. Maichack offers geared to this age group. He usually works with older kids and adults. The kids were very engaged and responsive. I have a table that details responses which I will be happy to email to anyone who requests it. *Summary:* Program fees--Out of the 23 libraries responding, none charge program fees on a regular basis. Three reported that when materials or food costs indicate it, a small user fee is occasionally charged. Program Room rentals--16 libraries responded: 11 libraries do not (or rarely) charge for nonprofit use; 11 libraries charge for for-profit use; 4 libraries do not allow for-profits; one does not charge for either category. -- Carol Brown Adult Programming New Haven Free Public Library 133 Elm St., New Haven CT 06510 (203) 946-8835 Visit www.nhbulletin.blogspot.com for regional events and information. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which will help visitors explore the Ferguson's download services. Interactive learning stations give users an opportunity to search the Library's digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and download and enjoy eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video. Our users can take advantage of the Library's download service 24/7 by visiting our website, www.fergusonlibrary.org. From there, they can browse our collection of best-selling, new release, and classic titles, and check out a digital title with a valid library card. (Just follow the link for downloading books and music on the Library's homepage.) Once downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on a computer or transferred to supported mobile devices, like MP3 players. Many audio titles can also be burned to audio CD. At the end of the 21 day lending period, titles will automatically expire and are returned to the collection. There are no late fees. They are not true lice, nor fleas and do not bite humans. Most do not have wings. They get "slightly grayer" as they age. They do not damage library materials but feed on the microscopic mold growing on the books. They also like "starch, starchy pastes and glue of books and wallpaper." "They are readily introduced into a building in furniture, boxes, books, and paper, all of which may have microscopic molds upon which they feed. They hide in dark areas, behind molding and baseboards, between floors and in the wall space, and behind electrical and plumbing fixtures, as well as in many of the pipe wrappings." They are numerous in damp warm undisturbed situations but as the humidity goes down naturally in the fall and winter, their population wanes. Cold weather and a dry environment will kill them. (Resource: How to recognize and eliminate silverfish, beetles, cockroaches, moths, termites, rats and mildew in libraries and archives. by Thomas A. Parker. Upland, PA : DIANE Publishing Co. Originally published in 1988 under the title: Study on Integrated Pest Management for Libraries and Archives by UNESCO. Quotations from p. 30-32) For libraries, I recommend striving for the best control of temperature and humidity you can achieve, year round. Regular sweeping, dusting and elimination of stockpiles of empty boxes are always good practices. Preservation specialists recommend avoiding the use of chemicals except in extreme cases. This is to avoid danger to the staff and public from the chemicals and lingering harm to the collections. "Integrated Pest Management" is the term used to indicate a variety of mostly non-chemical responses to insects in a library. These efforts include use of good housekeeping practices such as, never leave food trash in the building overnight and good building maintenance practices, such as, stop up the holes where pests might enter the building and stop leaking faucets and the like so there is no water supply for the pests. If you suspect an infestation, use sticky traps to assess the extent of the problem. Freezing kills many insects without damaging paper. But freezing can damage some materials. Read the section on freezing in the NEDCC leaflet on ?Integrated Pest Management? http://www.nedcc.org/resources/leaflets/3Emergency_Management/10PestManagement.php before deciding it is safe for your materials. This document also says: ?Although some insects may not be a direct threat to collections, their presence may attract insects that do pose a threat. Some insects feed on the bodies of other insects. Most pests (insect and otherwise) are attracted by debris from human or other animal activities." Another resource is "?Bugs? are eating my treasures" http://www.bishopmuseum.org/research/pdfs/cnsv-bugs.pdf from the Bishop Museum in Honolulu which describes how to know if you have a problems with insects, prevention methods and response. I think she and her colleague are doing a very positive thing for libraries, library patrons and students in Kenya, and could use assistance in their efforts: During July, Susan Yannello and Audra Zimmermann, both of the Donohue Group, participated in a humanitarian mission of The American Friends of Kenya (www.afkinc.org) The purpose of the mission was to evaluate the current status of AFK operations in libraries in Kenya, to gather ideas for better ways to organize, and to provide training and assistance to schools and communities that want to start a library but don't know what to do first. The mission was a resounding success. One of the activities during the mission was to have representatives of the organizations complete a questionnaire that asked about what was needed to create the library. The needs are extensive. Audra and Susan would like to ask for the support of the library community to fill some of those needs. Donations are sent to Kenya in shipping containers. A container is being filled at this time and will be shipped in September. Volunteers are in the process of sorting and boxing books and supplies that have been requested by the libraries. The sorting is being done in a bare storage unit. AFK has an immediate need for several free-standing shelving units to help the sorting process. We can use two units no longer than 18 feet and several units 8 to 10 feet long. The units must be intended to stand alone because there is nothing to attach them to. It would also be very helpful to have a number of bookends and book carts to use here and to send to Kenya. AFK volunteers are evaluating the needs surveys to determine what other things can be sent. Here is a list of some of the requests: full encyclopedia sets in many subjects, dictionaries (English and bilingual French/English, German/English and Swahili/English), maps and globes, educational charts (alphabet, animal groups, colors, etc.) and French and German literature appropriate for secondary school students. Donated materials will only be useful if they are in very good condition and are recent enough to be relevant. If you have anything to donate or would like to talk more about American Friends of Kenya, please contact Susan (syannell@dgiinc.com) or Audra (zimm@dgiinc.com). Cost: FREE!! Date and Time: August 21, 2008 from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Location: College of Holy Cross, Scalia Electronic Classroom on the second floor of the library Please RSVP to: Bob Scheier, rcheier@holycross.edu Description: "OpenURL Implementation: Link Resolution That Users Will Love." This follow-up to to introductory webinar on "Demystifying Standards" will take a look at implementing the NISO standard for link resolvers, OpenURL (ANSI/NISO Z39.88), from an end user perspective. You do not need to have attended the previous webinar to participate, however the slides and Q&A from that webinar are available online(http://www.niso.org/news/events/2008/webinars/alcts08/) for those who wish to review them.** OpenURL link resolving addresses a core issue: how we can help our users find and get the content that they want and have access to. But without successfully implementing OpenURLs, we are at risk of having content that can't be found our used, and patrons who do not know about the information they have access to. In this webinar, learn about some of the real ways that you can make certain that your link resolvers work effectively, about the practical steps that you can take to implement OpenURLs, and learn about some of the projects underway focused on improving OpenURLs so that your users can benefit. *Speakers include:* ** Joanna White, Product Manager, WorldCat Registry, OCLC, and member of the OCLC Maintenance Advisory Group for the OpenURL standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.88 - 2004 / http://www.niso.org/standards/z39-88-2004/) Joanna will provide a practical view of OpenURL implementation, including the process of registering OpenURLs with OCLC's WorldCat Registry and OpenURL Gateway, as well as discuss some of the ways that the OpenURL framework can be applied to best take advantage of this tool. ** Peter McCracken, co-founder and Director of Research, Serials Solutions, and Co-Chair of the NISO/UKSG KBART Working Group Peter will provide an update of the work of the NISO/UKSG KBART (Knowledge Bases and Related Tools) Working Group, sharing with the audience how the work of this group will be applied to improve the transfer of information found in knowledge bases, as well as speak to how their work will affect publishes, content providers, and libraries, and, more importantly, how the best practice will provide benefits to your end users. *Audience*: This webinar is for librarians, publishers, and content providers who are interested in how to best take advantage of OpenURL to provide users with simple, accurate access to the content they have rights to. It is expected that attendees will have an understanding of what OpenURLs are and what they do, but would like to learn more about best practices to improve the implementation and use of link resolvers so that patrons can find the information that they want. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------ Directions and Location information for he College of Holy Cross Directions to the campus Hogan Center where attendees can park: http://www.holycross.edu/directions/hogan.html Please park in the visitors lot to the right of the Hogan Center. We haven't purchased any new ones in several years, nor have we replaced any that have broken. Please read his note below and the list he has compiled so far (I have included both below) and get back to him (email Roger L. Kemp at rlkbsr@snet.net) with any additions you may have. Thanks! Kathy Leeds ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kathy: I've been asked to facilitate a roundtable discussion at the upcoming ICMA (Int'l City/County Management Assn) annual conference in late Sep. on "public libraries and the future." City Managers from throughout the US ~ and abroad ~ attend this annual conference. I've recently visited several public libraries in CT, read articles on this subject, and talked to a few current and former library directors, and have developed the attached list of changes taking place in America's public libraries. If you could send this to your membership for their review, and ask them to send me their comments about possible changes, additions, or deletions, it would certainly enhance my presentation this fall at the ICMA conference. I'd be happy to send you and your membership a copy of the final paper prepared for this session once it is completed. I know that "things were changing" in public libraries, when I just prepared a draft of a library reference volume (my 20th or so) and did the following without ever visiting a library: conducted an int'l literature search, downloaded articles from professional journals from throughout the world, reviewed the articles and selected about 50 of 'em for my volume, and then obtained all legal permissions from the publishers via e-mail. Wow!!! Never left my house!!! It was not to many years ago that I would have gone to several public and educational libraries in our State to review professional journals, select appropriate articles, and write letters to obtain legal permissions. This entire process would have easily taken a year+. With the price of gas, the online access is a lot cheaper!!! In any event. I thank you in advance for your cooperation in this effort. Kemp at rlkbsr@snet.net ~~ the following items are listed in random order ~~ (1) Increased number of computers, and general software applications. (2) More computer training programs (e.g., Internet, word, research, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) (3) Fewer hard copy reference resources (more information is now online). (4) More and more books and audio books are/will be online. (5) Increased state-wide use of municipal library cards at other local libraries. (6) Greater number of younger groups using library meeting rooms. (7) More media events held at libraries (e.g., movies, music, entertainment, arts and crafts, etc.). (8) Increased number of teen programs available (frequently called "young adult" programs), including Teen Advisory Councils. (9) Greater number of parent/child library events. (10) Increased number of music and animation studios for young people. (11) More cafes and coffee shops are located at libraries. (12) More comfortable seating arrangements to encourage interaction/discussion. (13) Less "quiet" and "study" times - more low-level verbal conversation allowed. (14) New libraries have less spaces allocated for "stacks" of books, and more areas for "community" space. (15) Community online access to electronic databases for research, news sources, and listing of community events, is now commonly available to citizens on a 24-7 schedule. (16) More space devoted to "teen" library resources (e.g., books, magazines, newspapers, computers, movies, etc.). (17) An increase in the number of community "reading programs" for young school children (i.e., those children in grade school). (18) Libraries (both main and branch) are being used as economic development incentives in urban areas to attract growth (e.g., cafes, deli's, restaurants, small stores, etc.). (19) Increase in market-driven information and research services for adults (e.g., consumer information, on government agencies and their documents, healthcare, and educational information). (20) Increase in the number of cultural programs offered to all library users (e.g., concerts, book discussions, programs for readers and writers, storytelling, etc.). (21) Many local public libraries have online services available to citizens 24-hours a day, even when they are closed to the general public. (22) More and more libraries are going to RFID (radio-frequency identification) self check-out systems (like many markets and large discount stores already have), freeing up the time of librarians to perform more important duties. One of the goals for the month is to inform the public about career development services, where they are available and how to utilize them. I was contacted by coordinators of the events for this year and asked if I could get the word out to libraries. They recognize that libraries provide many services to job seekers and were hopeful that you would take advantage of publicity surrounding Career Development Month to highlight these services. Perhaps libraries could sponsor career programs or feature career resources on their homepage during the month of November. The Department of Labor forwarded a listing of helpful job search, career development and occupational information websites. I put the document up on our website since the listserv doesn't allow attachments. It can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/6728ov I also noticed that the Dept of Labor has a speakers' bureau that might be a source of program ideas for your library. The changes are described on a page that is easily accessed by clicking on the "Recent Changes" tab at the top of the iCONN keyword search screen, or you can access the page directly at http://www.iconn.org/RecentChanges.aspx The most visible change is reducing the complexity of the search results display by reducing the number of resources that are searched by default to three (without limiting the user's ability to search any combination of resources). This change is only the beginning of a longer term process that will require the cooperation of all the database vendors we work with, now and in the future. In addition, we created customized classic menus for elementary, middle and high school libraries. We hope that you find these changes to be helpful. Improving the usability of the system is our highest priority. Your comments and suggestions are welcome. That >report provides important up-to-date economic data on the third >largest economic sector in Massachusetts. > >CultureCount is provided as a free public service. The database >currently houses 22,856 active records and offers a variety of search >features and research tools. > >"CultureCount is an outgrowth of NEFA's New England Cultural Database, >which was useful as a data warehouse for the small group of >researchers and state arts agency staff that knew to use it. >CultureCount is geared toward a more public audience," says Dee >Schneidman, NEFA Research Manager. "We've made the homepage more user- >friendly, with a clearer direction of what users can do on the site. >There is also more information about why to use the site, become >registered users, and even become subscribers or partners with NEFA. >We've tried to uncover all of the hidden features of the site and give >people an idea of how they could benefit from it." > >CultureCount is an important free service to the region. The more >local interaction there is with the database, the more valid and >useful the data continues to be for all of us - as a reliable data >source for our work, and an opportunity to share resources and raise >the visibility of our constituents. We want to encourage local >cultural communities to search the database, become registered users, >and update any local data they can. > >The searchable online database, the only regional cultural database in >the country, provides New England state arts agencies, researchers, >cultural organizations, funders, artists, policy makers, economists, >and the general public with a wealth of research information to >support analysis, advocacy, and policy development. It makes the case >for the strength of the cultural workforce in economic terms. > >"CultureCount is a vital tool to help the public understand the >tremendous impact that arts and culture have on the Massachusetts >economy," says Anita Walker, Executive Director of the Massachusetts >Cultural Council. > >In addition to the new CultureCount website, NEFA is launching a >marketing campaign to promote it. The theme of the campaign is >"because culture counts" and will be seen on public radio websites, >Google ads and in newspapers as PSAs. > >For more information about CultureCount and the marketing campaign, >visit www.culturecount.org.
