The publisher and author have expressed interest in setting up a Connecticut library tour in March 2009 and I wanted to see if there is any interest from libraries/school libraries around the state. "My Little Red Book" is a collection of stories from women of all ages and backgrounds about the experience of their first period. What started out as a high school project has become something much more - a book which includes contributions from well-known writers including Gloria Steinem, Erica Jong, Meg Cabot, Cecily von Ziegesar, and Joyce Maynard. For those who have doubts about this book, I suggest you check out a short video by the author at http://www.mylittleredbook.net and take a look at the PDF book excerpt which I have attached to this email. In order to help find out if that is really true in Connecticut, the State Library is making an early version of the Statistical Profile for Connecticut Public Libraries, 2008, available on WebJunction Connecticut. Though the data is preliminary, the state-wide totals indicate a consistent increase in public library use in Connecticut during the last fiscal year. Find the new Statistical Profile here: http://ct.webjunction.org/ct/stats/articles/content/33911593 . The data in the profile is available in an Excel download. Let me know if you have any questions. And starting January 1, 2009, the State Library will be setting up a brief survey where public libraries can enter some of their library use statistics for the first half of the 2009 Fiscal Year. Please make the completion of this quick survey your first New Year?s Resolution for 2009! This should provide us with a more current snapshot of library usage. Thanks! A print copy of their Guide has traditionally gone out to all libraries and high school guidance offices in Connecticut and many made extra copies for their patrons or students. This year the Guide will be available only on the web. This will save money for CCIC while also giving users the option of viewing it on the web or of having patrons print it from the web. Sharon Brettschneider _______________ Please visit http://www.theccic.org/guide.php to see the latest Guide to Connecticut's Independent Colleges & Universities along with a chart outlining academic programs at each institution. Independent colleges and universities have a presence in almost all areas of Connecticut and offer a wide range of training, degree, certificate, professional, two-year, four-year and post-graduate degree programs as well as both applied and theoretical research. They have student internship programs, work with local and national businesses in a variety of ways, and assist local schools and community efforts thereby enhancing the quality of life in our towns and cities. Together, these institutions annually educate more than 61,000 students and confer most of the bachelor's degrees (49%), master's degrees (64%), and doctoral (57%) and first-professional degrees (60%) earned in Connecticut. Overall, they award 49% of the degrees granted in Connecticut, including 57% of four-year degrees awarded to minorities and 44% of the students they educate come from Connecticut. In these difficult economic times, it is important to note that Connecticut's independent college sector annually awards over $407 million in institutional aid and that 77% of our students receive financial aid with an average award of almost $17,000. State funded need-based grants went to 5922 students in FY 08. Our website is rich with data and information. I urge you to direct interested students to it on a regular basis. www.theccic.org --- Scanned by M+ Guardian Messaging Firewall --- From KAbery at cslib.org Tue Dec 16 11:15:19 2008 From: KAbery at cslib.org (Kris Abery) Date: Tue Dec 16 11:11:46 2008 Subject: [Conntech] Free WebJunction Webinars in Jan. 2009 References: <4947ACBA0200004B000195F9@ns2.cslib.org> <4947AE4A0200004B000195FC@ns2.cslib.org> <4947AF940200004B000195FF@ns2.cslib.org> <4947AFA20200004B00019602@ns2.cslib.org> <4947B0090200004B00019605@ns2.cslib.org> <4947B09A0200004B00019608@ns2.cslib.org> <4947B7F70200004B0001960F@ns2.cslib.org> Message-ID: <4947B6DF.F821.004B.0@cslib.org> Please excuse the cross posting. Breakdancing (once known as B-boying---until the girls got into the act) originated on the streets of New York City during the seventies and was a huge influence on hip-hop culture in America. Movies like *Flashdance* inspired teens to compete against one another across America, spinning on their backs doing "windmills," training their bodies to "pop and lock," and mastering gravity-defying moves. In Internet Explorer, in the lower right-hand corner in the status bar there's a magnifying glass with a plus sign in it. You can click that to choose a zoom setting. Or you can use Ctl+ and Ctl- to zoom in and out. In Firefox, use View --> Zoom to choose your zoom setting, or you can use Ctl+ to zoom in, Ctl- to zoom out, and Ctl0 to reset to 100%. Has anyone used any other sort of lifting equipment on a temporary basis for moving books, book carts, and/or people between levels? What sources are there for renting such equipment, if it works? Our elevator will be out of service for 3 weeks. Hello Helpful ConnTechers, Russell Library must close down its elevator in mid-January for about 3 weeks of repair work. It is our only elevator and it used by patrons and staff to access several service levels, as well as book stacks. It is also used by pages to get book carts to book stacks located above ground level. Our floor space is on several levels so we are seeking ideas on how to best handle the 3 weeks of elevator repair work. Have any of you used equipment or procedures to move books from one level to another while your elevators or book lifts were out of service for several weeks? If so, what suggestions do you have for us? For example: Has anyone tried using the ladder lift systems that roofers use to transport bundles of shingles to a rooftop? Has anyone used any other sort of lifting equipment on a temporary basis for moving books, book carts, and/or people between levels? What sources are there for renting such equipment, if it works? All suggestions, especially those based on actual experience, are welcome! Thank you, and happy holidays, Vince Juliano Vincent Juliano, Assistant Director, Russell Library, Middletown, CT 06457, 860-347-2528 X144 "Books are where we go to complicate ourselves."
