The Connecticut Interlibrary Loan Activity, July 2007 - June 2008 report is now available on WebJunction Connecticut:
http://ct.webjunction.org/ct/stats/articles/content/25991964
Data in this seventeenth annual compilation of Connecticut interlibrary loan activity is based on the monthly interlibrary loan reports received at the State Library from 160 public libraries, 29 academic libraries, and 4 special libraries during July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. While this represents the majority of public and some academic libraries in the state, the report is not comprehensive.
To save on printing costs and trees, we will not be printing this report this year. For the first time, however, the complete report (rather than just a summary) is available on WebJunction CT.

Subject: [Conntech] 2008 Library Automation Survey
Message-ID: <491188CF.8829.00BC.0@cslib.org>
This message is being posted for Marshall Breeding (http://staffweb.library.vanderbilt.edu/breeding/ ):
I am conducting another round of the library automation perceptions
survey. Last year's survey was the basis for "Perceptions 2007: an
international survey of library automation:"
http://www.librarytechnology.org/perceptions2007.pl
The data collected through this year's survey will inform a similar
report that provides the statistical results and interprets to the
extent possible what it says about the current library automation arena.
The survey aims to measure how libraries perceive their current library
automation system, the companies involved in their support and
development, and to gauge interest in open source alternatives. As more libraries become involved with open source ILS products, I'm especially interested in measuring their satisfaction relative to those that use traditionally licensed systems.
Last year I received 1,779 survey responses. An even larger volume of
responses this year will help increase the validity of the survey and
result in a stronger report regarding the state of the industry. I
think that all of us have an interest in gaining a better understanding
of what libraries think about their current automation situation as we
think about effective strategies going forward.
Please take a few minutes to respond to the survey. The following link
provides more information about the survey and is the easiest way to get
to the survey response form:
http://www.librarytechnology.org/blog.pl?ThreadID=91
If you responded last year, I'm still very much interested in having you
respond this time also. Comparing the results of the two years might
reveal interesting shifts in perceptions.
Thanks for participating.

Vampires in New England
with Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni
Monday, November 17, 2008 @ 7:00 pm
Connecticut State Archaeologist Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni brings back the
dead in this fascinating look at the real vampire beliefs that once
prevailed among 18th century New Englanders. He will present
archaeological proof and modern forensic evidence for its existence in
Connecticut.
Dr. Bellantoni serves as the state archaeologist with the CT State
Museum of Natural History and Archaeology Center at the University of
Connecticut. He received his doctorate in anthropology from UConn in
1987 and was shortly thereafter appointed state archaeologist. His
duties are many, but primarily include the preservation of
archaeological sites in the state. His research background is the
analysis of skeletal remains from eastern North America. He has been
excavating in Connecticut for over 30 years
This program is free and open to the public - mature audiences only.
Seating is limited - registration is required.

Serials Cataloging, the *fourth of the CLC/OCLC Direct 2008-2009 training
opportunities, is Tuesday, November 18 (9:00 coffee, 9:30-3:30 training,
with a lunch-on-your-own break from noon to 1:00) at Farmington Library.
Instructors are Joni Cassidy of Cassidy Cataloguing Services and Mark
Sandford of William Paterson University Library.
This full-day workshop will begin with the MARC fields and fixed field
elements found in serials records, followed by the recent division of
serials into continuing resources and integrating resources (i.e. websites).
Since most work these days is done from existing copy, they will briefly
touch on the CONSER rules. Then they will focus on identifying the best copy
record available, flipping a print record to accommodate an electronic
version of an item, keeping up with title changes, and looking at iconn.org.
To register, go to:

Message-ID:
Can You Hear Me Now?
With his signature horn-rimmed glasses and nerdy appeal, actor Paul
Marcarelli has made the Verizon Test Man famous. Come hear Paul at the
Guilford Free Library on Thursday November 20 at 7:00 pm. Paul will sit down
with local journalist Pam Johnson (Guilford Courier) and talk about his
career, his ambitions, how he got started in performing, and how it feels to
be known everywhere. A great program for all ages, from High School to
adult. Come join us, it's free, we serve refreshments, and you'll see our
brand-new library meeting room! Reserve your place at
www.guilfordfreelibrary.org or call
203-453-8282.
(P.S. Sandy Ruoff's sister was Paul's High School drama coach, and she'll be
there to introduce him --it's going to be a great evening!).
We'd appreciate it if you'd post the attached flyer for your public. Thank
you.
Stephanie.

Fellow Members,
Is there anyone who has successfully configured an Epson TM-T88IV to
print a Library logo on the date due receipt? I've installed the Epson
Flash Logo and uploaded a bitmap of our logo, but can't manage to get
any further. Our ILS is Innovative Millennium ver. 2007. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Please pass the word.
A Woman in Business: The Life of Beatrice Fox Auerbach
Come to Windsor Public Library, Tuesday, December 2nd, at 7pm to hear
Virginia Hale discuss her new book on the life of Beatrice Fox Auerbach
and G. Fox & Company. A Woman in Business: The Life of Beatrice Fox
Auerbach tells the story of a self-effacing, diminutive woman from a
local retailing family who became the chief executive of the largest
privately owned department store in the world. As owner and CEO of G.
Fox from 1938-1963, her accomplishments were all the greater because she
was a woman in a man's world. Under Mrs. Auerbach's leadership G. Fox &
Company was the ultimate Connecticut shopping experience and was
nationally known for its elegance and above all for its high standard of
customer service. Beatrice Auerbach took extraordinary steps in her
business career - advancing women and promoting blacks from menial
positions to jobs in sales and management when no other retailers were
doing so. She inspired loyalty in her employees by offering job
security, an on-site infirmary, a scholarship program for the children
of employees, a non-contributory retirement plan, and most unusual was
the interest free loan fund set up for employees with personal
emergencies and "Bed Funds" at local hospitals whereby G. Fox employees
had access to free hospitalization when needed.
The author Virginia Hale was a Professor of English for 33 years,
teaching writing and literature. Now an Emerita at the University of
Hartford, she is has written a number of scholarly articles and is
co-author of a textbook entitled, Literature and Film of Other Cultures.
Since 1986 Dr. Hale has served as creator and discussion leader for a
series of NEH sponsored programs in libraries across the state,
including the series "Biographies of Women" and "Popular Culture:
Biographies of Stars and Artists." Over the years she has conducted a
number of discussion programs at Windsor Public Library and last spring
she was the facilitator for Windsor's "Big Read" program featuring The
Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Her book is available from Ingram
and Xlibris. Copies will be available for purchase at the program.

Message-ID: <6.2.5.6.2.20081118131621.02c78f40@libraryconnection.info>
Hello everyone,
The American Friends of Kenya expects to lose its storage space here in
Connecticut soon. We are searching for a new space and hope that someone
out there can give us some leads. AFK is looking for secure, relatively
clean, dry warehouse space. We'll need easy access because we'll be moving
many boxes of books and supplies that we collect for libraries in
Kenya. Our preference is to find something in
the eastern part of the state.
AFK is a 501c3 nonprofit organization so donated space may be tax
deductible. AFK will provide appropriate documentation.
Please respond to Susan Yannello at syannell@dgiinc.com
Thank you.

Hi All,
Several people have asked for a summary of my query, so here it is.
There doesn't seem to be an inexpensive, reliable product out there. The
folks who use the Walker Wireless have some of the same issues that I am
having with the cheapo one we are using (doesn't always count everyone
and the sensor can become crooked, so that it doesn't count anyone). In
addition, the Walker counts both ins and outs, so you have to remember
to divide the end result by two. In addition, the batteries are quite
expensive and not easy to find.
Hope this helps.

Subject: ALA Grassroots Programs at 2009 Annual Conference
Proposals Sought for Grassroots Programs at 2009 ALA Annual Conference
Do you have a great idea for an Annual Conference program but don't belong
to a committee or other group that can plan and produce a program? As part
of ALA President Jim Rettig's "Creating Connections" initiatives, you are
invited to submit a proposal for a program to take place at the 2009 ALA
Annual Conference July 9-15 in Chicago.
The purpose of a Grassroots Program is:
. To expand opportunity for participation in ALA by giving members who
do not belong to committees or boards within ALA an opportunity to plan and
produce a program at the Annual Conference
. To provide programs at the Annual Conference that address very
current issues by compressing to the greatest degree possible the program
planning schedule
. To enrich the variety and quality of programs at the Annual
Conference.
Proposals can be submitted by a single ALA personal member or by any group
of ALA members who do not serve together on a committee or board within ALA.
Proposals can address any topic of interest to ALA members. Proposals must
be original; they cannot replicate a program previously presented at an ALA
Annual Conference, Midwinter Meeting or national divisional conference.
Proposals previously submitted to a committee, board or task force in ALA,
one of its divisions or one of its round tables, cannot be resubmitted
Proposals will be judged on:
. Relevance of the program's topic to ALA members and the profession
at large
. Timelines
. Knowledge of proposed speaker(s) on the topic
. Originality - i.e., the degree to which the proposed program looks
at a topic in a new and fresh way or treats a topic that has not received as
much attention as it deserves, either because it is very new or due to some
other factor
Proposals can address ALA's key action areas:

We heard from Vicky Chase yesterday - her birthday. She received the
mousepads and other birthday surprises right on her day and she was
very, very happy. I want to thank all the libraries that sent mousepads
to Ghana via the Newington Library. According to Helen, who spoke to
Vicky on the phone yesterday after she received the shipment, the kids
will be using them soon and they are very grateful. Thanks again for
your kindnesses.

The New Haven Public Library presents Writers Live! with SANDI KAHN
SHELTON discussing
her recent novel, *Kissing Games of the World *(Shaye Areheart
Books,
2008)*, *on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 6-7 pm*.*
Shelton is the author of the novels *What Comes After Crazy* and *A Piece of
Normal*l, plus three nonfiction books on parenting. A feature writer for the
*New Haven Register*, she is also a frequent contributor to *Working Mother,
Family Circle, Woman's Day*, and *Redbook.* She resides in Guilford.
*Booklist* says "Shelton delves into family relationships with humor and
empathy" and the *Hartford Courant* notes that her books offer a "fine blend
of humor and poignancy." Shelton writes that "some people (say) these books
are hilarious and side-splittingly funny (like) "chick lit"?while others see
only the hard parts of the characters' struggles to find themselves amid the
confusion and grief wrought by their earlier lives and losses."
>From *Kissing Games of the World: **"*If there's one point that Jamie
McClintock and Nate Goddard can agree upon, it's that love is overrated.
Jamie doesn't have time for it. Nate doesn't need it. And they certainly
don't want it from each other." Read more at www.sandishelton.com.
The public is invited to meet this talented local author at the Downtown

Subject: [Conntech] odd call from apparent salesman
Message-ID: <1227543066_146@lucius>
I just received a very strange phone call from a man identifying himself as
a Dr. Rossi with an African-American group who rambled on and on, trying to
make jokes, and pushing a four-volume work on Latin Americans, and I'm
wondering if anyone else has heard from him. He claimed that he'd spoken
with our local high school and that a Spanish teacher was going to bring in
a group of students to use this work in our library. I was suspicious
because the logical thing would have been for the books to go to the high
school library if this was the intended use. When I asked if this was a
donation, he said that the books would be sent for us to preview. When I
said that we don't accept previews, he hung up abruptly.
I'm concerned that we may receive this unordered merchandise which, of
course, we would return, but the whole conversation was so devious that I
suspect that it's a scam of some kind. If anyone can shed any light on
this, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
Many thanks--

The company this gentleman represents is African American Publications,
located in Washington Crossing, PA. The 4 volume set that he is offering
is the Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States.
I did accept it on preview, which I rarely do, and kept it.

I apologize for any cross-postings.
We have been trying to obtain TV service through cable for quite some time,
as I know public libraries are entitled to free cable. Unfortunately there
is no cable to our facility and a Comcast has determined it will cost $5,000
to bring the cable to the building. I'm looking at other options, perhaps
AT&T or satellite. Has anyone had experience with an affordable way of
providing this service to our patrons? You can respond off list, if you'd
like. Many thanks.

I have called several contractors and am having difficulty getting them
to respond or to follow up with an estimate.
Has anyone replaced entry doors with button-activated
handicap-accessible doors (we have a set of doors, one into an "airlock"

I only need a very rough estimate at this point as it is for long-term

Register here.
The Farmington Library will sponsor an "unconference" library camp with
a special focus on public librarian issues and solutions. Past library
camps have focused on technology, and there will be a place for applied
technology discussions in many of our sessions. However, I would like
to see the whole range of topics come up during this session,
especially issues relevant to public libraries. Other librarians are
encouraged to come as well. I am looking for volunteers to help with
the following issues...Maintain Wiki, Technology Assistance, Registration (including wiki page),Program Ideas...
as well as general collaboration. If you are interested in
volunteering or attending please email me or add yourself to the list a
the following wiki...http://farmlibcamp.wikispaces.com/
Feel free to forward
this email to other state lists and persons as well. Lunch will
probably be provided for around $10 or Apricots is right across the
street! There will be no registration fee otherwise.

after December 1. On that date, an iCONN search box will be added to the
elementary and middle school classic menus. Each search box will be
customized to search only the resources that appear on its respective
classic menu.
Also on December 1, new buttons will appear on the Keyword Search
Screen:
- Public library users will see a button for HeritageQuest, the most
heavily used database in iCONN.
- Public and school users will see a button called Popular Magazines
that will take them to a page where they can access directly a selection
of the most heavily used titles. There will be separate pages for public
and school library users.
- There will be separate Popular Magazine pages for elementary, middle
and high schools that can be bookmarked in the same way that their
respective classic menus can be bookmarked
We at iCONN are always open to new ways to improve usability based on
feedback from librarians and users. We welcome your comments and
suggestions.
Best to all,
Eric

Subject: [Conntech] Emcee suggestions?
Message-ID: <448240.9189.qm@web82106.mail.mud.yahoo.com>
Hi. Our Friends group is sponsoring a new fundraising event in March and is in need of someone energetic to emcee the event. We were thinking of possibly inviting a local author or a media personality. Any suggestions out there? Thanks in advance.

Subject: [Conntech] weeding reference
Message-ID:
I would like to sincerely thank all the people who took the time to respond to my question about how long they keep various titles in their reference collection. I received a lot of good advice, so much that I wasn't able to respond individually to everyone. So please know how helpful all your replies were.
I also received a few requests to summarize for the list. Apparently, we here in Hamden are not the only ones reevaluating their reference collection. So here we go.
The World Almanac: Most libraries keep one year in reference. One library kept 2 years in reference and one kept them for 5 years. What they do with back issues varies. Many keep most of the run in their circulating collection (one reason given was that they are good for chronology of events for that year.) One library was able to keep their back issues from 1940 on in storage in the basement.
Statistical Abstract of the United States: The minimum amount of time that a library reported keeping this title was 2 years. Several libraries kept it for 10 years, one kept it for 4 years. One library only kept the hardcopy in reference for one year, but it was also available online on their PAC's.It was not noted how far back the online database went.
CQ Almanac, CQ Congress and the Nation, and CQ Politics in America: All libraries reported keeping just the current year and either the past 2 or 3 years, no more than that.
Connecticut Public and Special Acts: One library reported keeping them all; most of the other libraries kept anywhere from just the current issue, replacing it when the new edition arrived to the last three years.
Connecticut Register and Manual: Libraries differed immensely on how long they keep this, depending mainly on where it was housed in the library. If they have a History Room many libraries keep them all. If they are in the reference collection most only keep the current issue. One library keeps five years in reference, but is considering cutting back to two years.
Other very useful suggestions that I received were to remove the titles in question, but don't throw them away. Then you can see if people ask for them. Another library integrated their reference collection with their circulating non-fiction in order to raise the profile of the collection.
Hope this helps others wrestling with this dilemma, and again, heartfelt thanks to everyone for their information and suggestions.
