Are you noticing that your customers are from a variety of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds? Do you and your staff find it a challenge to understand how cultural differences impact customer service? If so then the State Library has the workshop for you. Libraries today are increasingly challenged by the complexity and diversity of the communities they serve. To succeed in delivering library services to culturally diverse communities, library staff must learn to thrive in an environment in which working with community members to plan, design and promote library services is encouraged. Yet library staff seldom have the time and opportunity to learn and practice the skills necessary to enhance library services in multicultural communities and provide excellent customer service. In order to give library staff this opportunity Yolanda Cuesta of Cuesta MultiCultural Consulting will present a full day workshop designed to help library staff enhance their customer service skills in serving diverse communities. Customer Service in a Multicultural Community October 29, 2008 South Windsor Public Library 1550 Sullivan Ave., South Windsor Directions: http://www.southwindsorlibrary.org/sw/hours.asp The goal of this workshop is to help library staff understand the basic principles of intercultural communication and how to apply them effectively in delivering services to multicultural customers. Knowledge and skills to be acquired: ? Understanding of the perspectives that other cultures bring to the library experience and to customer service ? Understanding of how cultural differences impact customer service ? Knowledge of techniques for identifying and responding to the needs of multicultural customers ? Knowledge of strategies and communication skills to work effectively with multicultural customers Coffee and registration for the workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the workshop running from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration fee $30 includes the cost of lunch which will be provided Yolanda J. Cuesta is the lead consultant in Cuesta MultiCultural Consulting, a firm specializing in helping libraries serve ethnic and culturally diverse communities. Please note that the location has been changed from the Harry Bennett Branch Library in Stamford to the Easton Public Library. The date and time remain the same--Tuesday, November 4 from 9:30 to 3:30 with lunch included on site from 12:00 to 1:00. I guarantee that you and your staff will find this class to be invaluable for front line staff and all those with customer service responsibility; it is a way to enhance your library's reputation for excellent customer service at all levels. This class, taught by OCLC Eastern, will concentrate on techniques for delivering services, giving referrals, and answering questions clearly and concisely. Anyone who is interested in enhancing their interpersonal effectiveness in a library will benefit, but this class is particularly useful for those who are on the front line, who lead teams, committees or projects, or who are in coordinator roles. With the aid of clickers, students vote for the scenes they want to see next, momentarily transforming the classroom into a movie theater and a ballot box. Ramona Islam and Leslie Porter, who wrote the screenplay, will explain the challenges they faced and the successes they experienced in customizing the movie to their audience. Lei Wang will share Yale Medical Library's experience in distributing their online instruction videos as podcasts. He will discuss his hardware and software setup, technical issues, his budget for the project and he will present his analysis of usage statistics to prove the cost-effectiveness of the project. Susan Slaga and Deborah Herman produced over a dozen short screencasts using Adobe Captivate and some videos on topics ranging from using digital course reserves to searching article databases and the library catalog. As part of a larger podcasting initiative in 2007 and 2008, the CCSU Elihu Burritt Library extended access to these for viewing on a video iPod and other video-enabled mobile devices. The presentation covers the technical aspects of optimizing library screencasts and vidcasts for the iPod, including the software used, costs involved, options for making vidcasts available to students, promotion, and evaluation of the usage and effectiveness as a learning tool. After many years at our library, she embarked on a new adventure. She joined the Peace Corps and is now in Ghana. Her birthday is coming up in November and I have been trying to think of what I will send her that will be useful and bring her joy in her new life. Below is an excerpt from her latest email. I thought it might be a wonderful gesture to send mouse pads to her for her students and what better way to honor her service in a Connecticut library than to send her mousepads from other librarians/libraries. If you would be willing to donate a gently used or new mousepad please send it to me in CCar and Helen Aveline and I will make sure it gets to Africa in Vicky's birthday package. Visit Vicky's blog - 1person.wordpress.com Thanks in advance. Jeanette >From Vicky's email - I finished my first week of classes this week. I am teaching 5 classes each for one double period. The double period lasts for 1 hour and 20 minutes. This week I just let them go into the computer lab and explore the computers. They were very excited and did very well navigating the computers. There are of course many problems they have a hard time using the mouse. That problem is made worse because we have no mouse pads and a very bumpy surface for the mice to move on. I have them use their notebooks. They also do not know the keyboard. But they exhibit many of the skills that people need to learn the computer. curiosity, persistence, logical problem solving. I told one class that today and they just beamed. I have noticed that the teachers here prefer to chastise instead of praise. these kids are so good. They always help me with carrying things. they fetch my water, will wash my clothes. Even when no masters were in class they were in the classrooms studying. The headmaster chastised them at monday morning assembly this week for not studying last week when there were no classes. But I saw many students studying. And why were there no classes because the administration had not gotten their act together to create the class schedule! so if the administration does not care enough why should they expect the students to care? ok enough venting I will not change the Ghana educational system but maybe I will change a few kids lives. that's enough. She and her husband Bill examined this issue in depth in their one-hour documentary, *"Deadlines and Dollars: The Challenges Facing Local TV Reporters."* The Schwanbecks followed several local TV reporters around to explore the problem of how more news stations are relying on crime stories to fill the news hole because of corporate pressure for "cheaper and easier." In the process the Schwanbecks developed an empathy with the challenges the news crews face. "Deadlines and Dollars" was 18 months in the making, and received an Award of Excellence at the Festival of the Media Arts at this year's Broadcasters Education Association. We will bring together leading architects, designers, librarians, and vendors to hone in on the challenges and solutions we face in making libraries sustainable. As previous Green Design institutes have shown, there is much more to sustainability than making our libraries green. With every Green Design Institute, we've taken a leap forward in knowledge and understanding, but there is so much more we can learn from these experts and each other. Join us for a day-long series of green-themed presentations, panels, and breakout sessions, and learn the latest developments, options, costs and strategies being adopted. We'll also reprise one of the most successful features of the day: hands-on breakout sessions with architects. Each librarian attendee will have a chance to have their design challenge be the focus of one of the six architect-led breakout sessions. The design challenges do not have to focus solely on going green, but the breakout session will incorporate green solutions into the design. Limited to 100 attendees, the seminar is for those considering a new building project or renovation, in the fundraising or pre-bond stage, or in the early building process. DATE: December 4, 2008 TIME: 9AM - 6PM LOCATION: Connecticut Legislative Office Building 300 Capitol Avenue Hartford, CT 06106 (The building is connected to the State Capitol [210 Capitol Avenue] by an underground concourse) SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES: Welcome breakfast, registration, lunch, cocktail, educational panels and presentations, plus group breakout sessions. PANEL DISCUSSIONS: LJ editors, library consultants, designers, vendors, librarians and architects. BREAKOUT SESSIONS: Each session, led by sponsoring architects, will focus on a pre-selected, real-life challenge submitted in advance by attendees and chosen by LJ. To get the most out of the afternoon breakout sessions, you must submit a description of your library's "challenge" to LJThinkTank@reedbusiness.com, no later than October 28, 2008. * Submission guidelines: * Double-spaced word document (maximum 200 words). Please describe either the larger design problem you are tackling with your new building, renovation, or addition, or a particular aspect of it. Your problems do not need to have a specific "green" component, but the architects will incorporate green solutions during their presentations. * Supporting documents to help us best visualize the space and challenges described above. These could include photos (2-3 is fine, and can be quick snap-shot digital images), plans, sketches, etc. These items, however, are not needed to be considered. Also playback equipment becomes obsolete. Assuming there is no copyright or privacy problem, making copies on stable media is a good idea. Keeping a transcript of an oral history is another good idea but the recording preserves the speaker's accent and emphasis and is a far more valuable and interesting artifact. It may be possible to find a local company to simply make the conversion but consider making a preservation plan that allows for a master copy and a use copy and storage of the master in the proper environment. Once you convert it to digital format, you have to think about preservation of the digital data, metadata, and a plan to refresh or migrate every five to ten years to new media and new software (CD, DVD, server, MP3 next generation and so on). The September 15th issue of Library Journal covered this story with their article "SOPAC 2.0 Debuts in Darien": http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6592650.html?q=john+blyberg On October 30th at the Farmington Library, John Blyberg will explain this ambitious project and will demonstrate how easy it is to install and use SOPAC 2.0 in your library. What is a SOPAC? SOPAC is "an open source social discovery platform for bibliographic data." SOPAC integrates with your library's ILS system, while allowing users to tag, rate and review your holdings - making your catalog truly community-driven. What is SOPAC 2.0? John Blyberg developed SOPAC 1.0 at the Ann Arbor District Library; the code was made available to other developers but it was not designed as a complete product to be distributed and used "out of the box" by other libraries. SOPAC 2.0 is different - it has the potential to work with any ILS, and it has been completely rewritten from the ground up to be a real software package that can be installed and used in your library. About John Blyberg John is the Head of Technology and Digital Initiatives at Darien Library and is best known for his work on Ann Arbor District Library's award winning website and first SOPAC, released in 2007. John has received numerous awards for his technological innovations, including bring named a Mover & Shaker by Library Journal, winning first place in the Talis "Mashing-Up the Library" competition To learn more, visit Darien Library's catalog (SOPAC in action): http://www.darienlibrary.org/catalog http://www.thesocialopac.net/ http://www.blyberg.net/ Register online -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If your total project cost is over 5 million, the new statute takes effect on January 2009, and if your renovation project is more than 2 million, it takes effect on January 2010. If you can't start construction by that date, you will be affected by this statute. The Statute Section 29-256a. was revised in P.A.07-242, S.78. Sec. 78. Section 29-256a of the general statutes is repealed and the following is substituted in lieu thereof (Effective October 1, 2007): [The] (a) On and after January 1, 2008, the State Building Inspector and the Codes and Standards Committee shall revise the State Building Code to require that buildings and building elements, including residential, be designed to provide optimum cost-effective energy efficiency over the useful life of the building. Such revision shall meet the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers Standard 90. 1 for new construction. (b) Notwithstanding subsection (a) of this section, the State Building Inspector and the Codes and Standards Committee shall revise the State Building Code to require that any (1) building, except a residential building with no more than four units, constructed after January 1, 2009, that is projected to cost not less than five million dollars, and (2) renovation to any building, except a residential building with no more than four units, started after January 1, 2010, that is projected to cost not less than two million dollars shall be built or renovated using building construction standards consistent with or exceeding the silver building rating of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design's rating system for new commercial construction and major renovation projects, as established by the United States Green Building Council, or an equivalent standard, including, but not limited to, a two-globe rating in the Green Globes USA design program. The inspector and the committee shall provide for an exemption for any building if the Institute for Sustainable Energy finds, in a written analysis, that the cost of such compliance significantly outweighs the benefits. The Library Journal Design Institute East - Going Green will give you ideas on how to meet this new statute. It is open to librarians who are in the bond, pre-bond or early planning stage. Admission is FREE! Library Journal Design Institute East - Going Green Co-sponsored by the Connecticut State Library and Connecticut Library Consortium The fourth Library Journal Design Institute moves to Connecticut for a one-day think tank on green design. Regards, David Boudinot, Henry Carter Hull Library Clinton, CT *Saturday October 18, 2008 is New Haven's third annual Home Movie Day!* Home Movie Day is a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking held annually at many local venues worldwide. Home Movie Day events provide the opportunity for individuals and families to see and share their own home movies with an audience of their community, and to see their neighbors' in turn. It's a chance to discover why to care about these films and to learn how best to care for them. Bring out your Super 8, 8mm and 16mm home movies! We'll inspect them and watch them together! Come play Home Movie Day Bingo, win some prizes, learn about your films and how to take care of them! Home movies do not just capture the important private moments of our family's lives, but they are historical and cultural documents as well. Consider Abraham Zapruder's 8mm film that recorded the assassination of President Kennedy or Nickolas Muray's famously vibrant color footage of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera shot with his 16mm camera. Imagine how different our view of history would be without these precious films. Home Movie Day is a celebration of these films and the people who shot them. I urge anyone with an interest in learning more about how to care for and preserve their own personal memories to join in the festivities being offered in their community..." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <1224850891_1@lucius> Hi, Sorry for the Double postings.. If you are looking for a great program to attract the men and some women to your library... We had this week one of our most successful author events of the past several years at the Whittemore Library. Connecticut Native - Jack Cavanaugh, did a wonderful talk and signing of his new book - Giants Among Men: How Robustelli, Huff, Gifford, and the Giants Made New York a Football Town and Changed the NFL Mr. Cavanaugh enthralled a crowd of more than 75 people with stories of 1950's-1960's New York Football Giants and 1950's New York City. He is a former Sports Reporter for the NY Times and his last book - Tunney - was nominated for a Pulitzer. A super gentleman!! If you get the Waterbury Republican, there was an article on his appearance in yesterday's (10/23) sports section. The writer gave Mr. Cavanaugh and our library super reviews on the event. I've spoken with Mr. Cavanaugh and he would be interested in doing more talks/signings if there were other libraries in the state interested. I know he is doing signings in Westport, Greenwich, New Canaan, Wilton and Fairfield soon. Drop us an email and I can give you Mr. Cavanaugh's email address... Our library began this past summer a series of signings and talks by sports authors. So far we have had 3 well attended events and more are in the planning stages. Are there any other libraries in CT that have have done a series or have held sports author signings??? We would love to compare notes with you to see what worked and didn't work for you... Besides the author appearances, we have had other things going on the day of the events to attract people into the library. The day of the talk on the 47' Yankees, we showed the film of the 1947 World Series between the Yankees/Dodgers 3 times.. For the Giants book this week we had a raffle of old and new NFL Giants memorabilia (all donated by 1950's Giant players & 2008 Super Bowl Giants signed lithograph). We began these events in hoping to bring more men into the library and it seems to have worked. At our talk this week of the 75 people attending, I would guess 60 were males. Many hadn't been in the library for many years. Our author in the late summer who covered the 1947 Yankees attracted a mostly male crowd of over 60 people. We had Mr. Cavanaugh's talk filmed for showing on Public Access so that may attract more men to our library for books and future sports talks... And people attending were not just not listening but buying books as well. Mr. Cavanaugh sold out all of the books he had bought. All 3 of the authors left very happy. John W. It will be taught by OCLC Eastern's instructor DeEtta Jones, an organization development consultant with experience as director of organizational learning at the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Introduction to Public Service provides an overview of the fundamental communication principles and tools needed to deliver high quality customer experiences. Participants will learn techniques for delivering services, giving referrals, answering questions clearly and concisely. This session will focus on customer service for a variety of stakeholders - users, colleagues and leadership groups. It is a perfect opportunity for anyone who is interested in enhancing their interpersonal effectiveness in a library. It will be particularly useful for those who have front line customer service responsibility, lead teams, committees or projects, or who are in coordinator roles, with responsibility for, but not authority over, those whom one seeks to influence. I find it to be very rude and "inappropriate". I always assume that when a librarian asks a question on this listserv and asks for responses offlist it is because that person does not want everyone's inbox cluttered with responses to a question that does not concern the rest of us--something I am actually thankful for. I'm sure anyone asking for responses would be more than happy to share the info they collect as long as you just ask that person for their findings. In the future, I would suggest using a little more professional courtesy with your colleagues. Message-ID: <5FF0320B9DB24B458589AD88433FC412@TPL.local> Bill Berloni Author Talk @ the Trumbull Library Trumbull, CT - On Sunday, November 23 at 2 p.m., Mr. Bill Berloni returns to the Trumbull Library to speak about his new book, Broadway Tails: Heartfelt Stories of Rescued Dogs Who Became Showbiz Stars! Come meet Chico, who was Bruiser, Chloe, who was Rufus, in the Broadway production of Legally Blonde, The Musical. Broadway Tails is a remarkable tale of a man who rescues shelter dogs and turns them into the toast of Broadway. Defying the odds, Bill Berloni was a nineteen-year-old theater apprentice who rescued a dog from a local shelter and, together, they redefined what animal performers could do in the original production of the Broadway hit Annie. "A heartwarming book . . . If you've encountered a furry friend in a Broadway show it likely was put there by Bill Berloni, the theater industry's top animal trainer. . . . It's Wild Kingdom meets 42nd Street-and a fun read for anyone who loves theater or animals (and especially those who love both). . . . A canine critique would insist it's 'four paws up' for Broadway Tails." -Houston Chronicle Copies of the books will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be served.
