This FREE open house at The NEAT Center (www.neatmarketplace.org) at Oak Hill in Hartford is Wednesday, September 10, 2008 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
If you've ever had questions about AT products, you can learn about the latest equipment and services currently available for people who are blind or visually impaired. Representatives from several leading manufacturers and service providers will be available to provide hands on product overview and to answer questions.
I have been to a few of these open houses and consistently found the product demonstrations and related information very helpful. This really is a great opportunity to learn about services and assistive technology that is currently available not only at NEAT but in the marketplace generally; fwiw, it was well worth my time.

Library 2.0 Overview
What is Library 2.0 and why is it important? Loosely defined Library
2.0 describes an approach to library service that is interactive,
collaborative, and driven by user needs and expectations. Library 2.0
calls for libraries to encourage user participation and feedback in the
development and maintaining of library service. In this full-day
workshop we?ll explore the basics of Library 2.0. We will also explore
a selection of Library 2.0 tools (Librarything, Flickr, Del.icio.us,
Wiki and more) with plenty of hands-on time to practice. In addition
participants will create a class Wiki about how to use these tools in
the library and how to teach patrons how to use them.
Topics covered include:
*Library 2.0 basics
*Librarything, Flickr, Del.icio.us, Wiki and more
*Uses in the library for staff and patrons

Subject: [Conntech] Library Services for Culturally Diverse Communities
Message-ID: <48BD1407.1A3E.008E.0@cslib.org>
Please excuse cross postings.
The Connecticut State Library Presents
2 Workshops On
Library Services for
Culturally Diverse Communities
Libraries today are increasingly challenged by the complexity and
diversity of the communities they serve. To succeed in delivering
library services to culturally diverse communities, library staff must
learn to thrive in an environment in which working with community
members to plan, design and promote library services is encouraged. Yet
library staff seldom have the time and opportunity to learn and practice
the skills necessary to enhance library services in multicultural
communities and provide excellent customer service.
In order to give library staff this opportunity Yolanda Cuesta of
Cuesta MultiCultural Consulting will present 2 full day workshops
designed to help library staff develop financial support for serving
culturally diverse communities and enhance their customer service skills
in serving those same diverse communities.
Yolanda J. Cuesta is the lead consultant in Cuesta MultiCultural
Consulting, a firm specializing in helping libraries serve ethnic and
culturally diverse communities. She has over 25 years experience as a
trainer and consultant with public libraries and non-profit
organizations. Her training and consulting emphasis include community
based needs assessments, building partnerships and community coalitions,
marketing and public relations, strategic planning and evaluation, and
grant writing. She is a trainer for the Public Library Association?s
Planning for Results and Managing for Results Process. WebJunction's
Spanish Language Outreach Program has been developed, in partnership
with Yolanda Cuesta.
In 2005 Yolanda presented workshops on Planning Library Services for

to PDF files
Message-ID: <48BE78FA.9A91.00CD.0@cslib.org>
Hi Conntechers,
I thought these two free webinars might be of interest to those of you who make documents available on the web stuff for the public.
Webinar: Improving Accessibility of Troublesome PDF Files
Sept. 24th at 2 PM Eastern
Presenter: Andrew Downie, SEO, Adaptive Technologies, Australia
For people using assistive technology, PDF files can be a source of enormous frustration. This presentation will look at the various forms PDFs can take, what makes some inaccessible and what makes others potentially very useful. Options for dealing with the troublesome ones, without resorting to violence, will be offered. By way of injecting some optimism, benefits of well structured PDFs will be examined. As well as providing some techniques for dealing with some apparently inaccessible files, this snapshot will serve as an introduction to the EASI 4-part PDF Webinar Series to be presented by Karen McCall in October.
Register for the Public PDF Overview Webinar at http://easi.cc/forms/andrew.htm
Webinar: Understanding Electronic Document Formats
Thur. Sept. 25th at 2 PM Eastern
Presenter Robert Beach
There are many document formats available to computer users. However, are they all accessible? Are they all navigable? Are they all usable for accommodation and/or production purposes? What are the pluses and minuses of the different file types?
This webinar will look at several of the common document formats used as both accommodations for individuals with disabilities and production files in producing accessible materials. Some of the document formats that will be discussed are: plain text format (TXT), rich text format (RTF), Word Document format (DOC), hypertext markup language format (HTM), Portable Document Format (PDF), WYNN (WYN), Kurzweil (KES), and DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System).

Subject: [Conntech] 3-session writing course in West Hartford
Message-ID:
Please consider throwing this announcement at your writer friends...
3-SESSION SCREENWRITING COURSE AT WEST HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY
20 South Main Street
Three Consecutive Saturdays - October 4, 11, and 18
Library Board Room - Noah Webster Branch
9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
SCRIPT RIGHT, a three-part course on the art of screenwriting, will be
offered on three Saturdays in October at the Noah Webster Library.
Developed by Jacquelin Devlin and Geoff Saunders, two members of the
West Hartford Screenwriters Group, the course is free and open to
writers of all abilities.
Classes will be held in the Board Room, second floor, of the Noah
Webster Library on October 4, 11, and 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Each week will cover a different aspect of script writing, beginning
with screenplay format -- the ultimate "show, don't tell" visual form --
and basic screenplay structure. Week 2 covers development of complex
characters and how to make dialogue work on many levels. Week 3 will
deal with the writer's continued development and the business of
screenwriting. Participants must be able to attend all three sessions.
Video clips, interactive exercises, and short, stress-free writing
assignments will be part of the curriculum. "Yes, you can write Little
Red Riding Hood in screenplay format and it won't cost you a minute's
sleep," said Devlin. "Fear not. The course is light, fun, but offers
everything you need to get started and the opportunity to hone your
skills if you've already begun to write."
It is suggested that participants view "Casablanca" and "Hitch" prior to
attending. Viewing "The Queen" and "The Martian Child" would also be
helpful.
IMPORTANT: Seating is limited for this course, and REGISTRATION IS
SELECTIVE. To apply, please write a paragraph completing this sentence,
"I would like to attend the library's screenwriting workshop because..."
Send your paragraph and your contact information to:
screenwriting@westhartfordlibrary.org, or drop it off at the library (20
S. Main St.). Contact information must include your: full name; address;
phone; email. Applications will be accepted until Sept. 15; selected
participants will be notified by Sept. 17.
For further information, contact Joe Cadieux at the library (860)
561-6998, or at the email address above. For more info about the
screenwriting group, please visit:

Subject: [Conntech] Blocked Websites
Message-ID: <48BFF119.457E.0095.0@cslib.org>
This message is in response to the recent questions on this and other lists about CEN filtering and is intended only for those districts and libraries using CEN's content filtering product 8e6.
CEN has been doing limited testing on a patch provided to us by 8e6. This patch, which 8e6 developed as a result of CEN's input to their product manager, will provide increased flexibility for school districts and libraries to either block or allow sites within the "Exception URL" user interface. With this patch, users may now use wildcards (e.g. www.youtube.com/*) in URL's rather than just explicit ones (e.g. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMGR9q43dag). Using Exception URL's is the only way to "override" sites that fall into categories included within the "Minimum Level of Filtering" adopted by the Commission on Educational Technology (CET).
CEN believes this patch will allow districts more delegated administration and flexibility, but cautions its use - e.g. using the example above will allow ALL youtube videos not just specific ones that your educators may wish to view! This was provided only as an example of its ability to now use wildcards.
CEN has now applied this patch to all its filtering servers and is now
available for your use. Should you have questions or concerns with this
please call into their helpdesk at 860-622-2300 option 9 as this is the
most efficient way to reach them.
I hope this helps.

Library 2.0 Overview - Sept. 16th (MLSC)
Loosely defined Library 2.0 describes an approach to library service
that is interactive, collaborative, and driven by user needs and
expectations. In this full-day workshop we?ll explore the basics of
Library 2.0. We will also explore a selection of Library 2.0 tools
(Librarything, Flickr, Del.icio.us, Wiki and more) with plenty of
hands-on time to practice. In addition participants will create a class
Wiki about how to use these tools in the library and how to teach
patrons how to use them.

The time this issue comes up the most at our library in Clinton is when
there are library fines. We've had several incidents where a parent will
absolutely refuse to pay fines as "it was the ex-spouse who forgot to return
their kids books on time."
The Follet software we use does have 2 address fields so both contact
names/info could be linked to the library card account. I suppose the
primary address would be whichever parent has more primary custody? Might
need to consult with a lawyer on this one.
Cheers,
David

Subject: [Conntech] NEW Workshop: Cataloging Electronic Resources: An
Introduction to Basics (MLSC)
Message-ID: <48CE94190200004B00016687@ns2.cslib.org>
The Connecticut State Library Division of Library Development presents a
NEW workshop:
Cataloging Electronic Resources: An Introduction to Basics
Electronic resources are no longer remarkable, atypical holdings in
libraries?but they are often the one resource format that is not
reflected in the library?s catalog. In libraries where electronic
resources are not cataloged, a search for information on a topic
routinely excludes resources such as electronic journal articles, web
sites, digital movies and sound recordings, electronic books and other
electronic resources, some of which are significant budget items. This
workshop will focus on how to identify the traditional catalog access
points as well elements that are unique to an electronic resource to
build or edit a catalog record. Some MARC formatting will be reviewed.
Participants will leave the workshop equipped to create records that
provide access to electronic resources in their online catalog.
*Recommended for: any level cataloger interested in including
electronic resources in a library catalog.

Internationally best-selling author Tess Gerritsen will be at the
Enfield Public Library on Wednesday, September 24 at 7 PM, courtesy of
the Friends of the Enfield Library. Don't miss this opportunity to meet
and greet this doctor-turned-author that Publisher's Weekly has dubbed
"the medical suspense queen".
Gerritsen, who earned an M.D. at the University of California, San
Francisco School of Medicine began writing fiction while on maternity
leave. She published her first novel, "A Call After Midnight", in 1987
and followed that up with eight more romantic suspense novels. Her
passion for writing and her success with it, in addition to her budding
family of two sons, convinced her to set aside her career as a physician
and put her medical expertise to work in another way.
"Harvest", Gerritsen's first medical thriller, was released in 1996
and marked her debut on the New York Times best-seller list. Since then
she has written twelve more novels. Her books have been translated into
31 languages with more than 15 million copies sold around the world.
Gerritsen, winner of both the Nero Wolfe Award (for best American
Mystery fiction) and the Rita Award (best novel in Romantic Fiction),
will have copies of her latest book "The Bone Garden" available for
sale and for signing, as well as copies of her as yet unreleased and
newest work, "The Keepsake".
All programs at the Enfield Public Library are free and
everyone is welcome. You can register at the circulation desk or by
calling 763-7512. For more information visit our website:

On behalf of the Whittemore Library in Naugatuck, I am conducting a survey of fines charged for overdue items.
How much do you charge per day for overdue books?
How much do you charge per day for overdue videos and dvds?
Do you have any other categories with different fines than the two above?
What is the maximum fine that you charge for overdue items?
Thank you!!

Fines for print material, cds, books on tape or cd = .10 a day
DVD & VHS & CD Roms $1.00 per day.
If the item is returned the fine max's out at half the cost of the item; if it is not returned it is the cost of the item plus a 5.00 processing fee.

At the Oliver Wolcott Library in Litchfield we have a "no fines policy"
and use a conscience box instead (the box is totally voluntary). Our
experience is that we make the same amount of money from the conscience
box than we did with the fines, and we feel strongly that in actuality
we make more money because people are now more willing to give us an
annual appeal donation. We do place blocks on people's records if the
item goes to the "lost" status and we're very firm on that since we are
so lenient in the "overdue" stage.
If you or anyone is considering this option, I would be happy to discuss
what we've found further. Most are benefits although there are a few
negatives to consider.

Going thru Google I came across at least 3 services that offer help to
libraries in sending
out mass emails and templates for instant newsletters.
Does anyone use any of the following:

Any pros or cons for any of the services?????
I can summarize and post the responses if people would like???

Subject: [Conntech] Sports Author Event - October 21st in Naugatuck...
Message-ID: <1221763771_3015@lucius>
Hi,
Are there any NFL New York Giant fans on the CLC or Conntech lists?????
On Tuesday, October 21st at 6:30pm the Whittemore Library in Naugatuck
will be hosting a Talk and Book Signing of:
Giants among Men: How Robustelli, Huff, Gifford and the Giants made
New York a Football town and changed the NFL
In Giants Among Men, Jack Cavanaugh, the acclaimed author of Tunney,
transports us to the NFL's golden age to introduce the close-knit and
diverse group that won the heart of a city, helped spread the gospel of pro
football across the nation, and recast the NFL as a media colossus.
Central to Cavanaugh's narrative, and emblematic of the Giants' bond with
their followers, was a hard-nosed future Hall of Fame defensive end named
Andy Robustelli. A World War II combat vet, a graduate of Arnold College,
undersized and nearing age thirty, Robustelli nevertheless anchored a Giants
defensive unit so ferocious that they were the first team to inspire crowds
to chant "Dee-fense!" But Robustelli and the Giants were a hit on the
gridiron, playing in six NFL Championship Games in eight seasons between
1956 and 1963, the most remarkable aspect of this team was perhaps its
relationship to the fans. These Giants were largely composed of ordinary
joes who were equally at ease hobnobbing with Gleason and Sinatra at Toots
Shor's as they were rubbing elbows with working-class rooters on the IRT en
route to Sunday games in the Bronx-like many of their fans, nearly all
Giants players worked second jobs off-season to make ends meet. But the
Giants of this era didn't merely affect the fans' relationship to the game;
they changed the game itself. The team launched the careers of future
head-coaching geniuses Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi, as well as those of a
galaxy of stars and future Hall-of-Famers including Frank Gifford, Sam Huff,
Emlen Tunnell, Roosevelt Brown, Y. A. Tittle, Charlie Conerly, Rosie Grier,
and Pat Summerall. The Giants teams of this remarkable era were tagged with
the soubriquet "Mara Tech" (for the Mara family, who had owned the franchise
since its inception)-due to the number of players and coaches who later
found success in the boardroom, the broadcast booth, and behind the bench.
Filled with historical and cultural insight and vivid portraits of
larger-than-life characters and indispensable everymen, Giants Among Men
transcends nostalgia and sports trivia to faithfully depict a watershed era
for both football and the American nation.
Jack Cavanaugh is a veteran sportswriter who has covered scores of major
boxing bouts, along with the Olympics, the World Series, Super Bowl games,
the Masters Golf Tournament, and both the U.S. golf and tennis opens. He is
the author of Giants Among Men, and Tunney, and his work has appeared most
notably on the sports pages of The New York Times, for which he has covered
hundreds of varied sports assignments. In addition, he has been a frequent
contributor to Sports Illustrated and written for Reader's Digest, Tennis
and Golf magazines, and other national publications. He is also a former
reporter for both ABC News and CBS News. Cavanaugh is currently an adjunct
writing professor at Fairfield University. He and his wife, Marge, live in
Wilton, Connecticut.
This book signing will be the 3rd sports book signing that the Whittemore
Library has hosted since this June.
We have had record attendance for both prior authors and hope to have more
Sports authors in the
future..
Tied into this appearance the library will be having a NY NFL Giants sports
photo/memorabilia
raffle.. Raffle will benefit our Rotunda Restoration fund.
Former Giant greats Frank Gifford, Andy Robustelli, Y.A. Tittle and Alan
Webb (Ansonia, Native) have
graciously donated sign photos to our raffle.. And just today the library
received a signed poster
from the NY Giants. The Poster is signed by Eli Manning and David Tyree!!!
If you are near the borough of Naugatuck on October 21st, please stop by the
library and hear
a great author talk football..

The Farmington Library will sponsor an "unconference" library camp with a special focus on public librarian issues and solutions. Past library camps have focused on technology, and there will be a place for applied technology discussions in many of our sessions. However, I would like to see the whole range of topics come up during this session, especially issues relevant to public libraries. Other librarians are encouraged to come as well. I am looking for volunteers to help with the following issues...Maintain Wiki, Technology Assistance, Registration (including wiki page),Program Ideas... as well as general collaboration. If you are interested in volunteering or attending please email me or add yourself to the list a the following wiki...http://farmlibcamp.wikispaces.com/
Feel free to forward this email to other state lists and persons as well. Lunch will probably be provided for around $10 or Apricots is right across the street! There will be no registration fee otherwise.

Subject: [Conntech] CEN filter information
Message-ID:
Hello -
I am new to this list-serv, so please forgive any lack of information I have and a cross-posting to CASL_L.
Is there a way to find out what is going on with the CEN Filter and the parameters of the filter? We have noticed in our school that sites we couldn't get in to earlier this school year, we can now get in to. But this is spotty, so we aren't sure if sites are being opened up.
Thank you.

I'm forwarding to everyone this query that Eileen included in her reponse to my question about overdue fines: We have new playaways we are starting to catalog.
BTW, what are the policies out there for playaways? We are buying security
boxes for them as we have for DVDs. Any thoughts to offer on overdue fines,
length of loan, and how it's going out there with this new format?
Thanks,

Thankfully, we have not had the big storms that have been so devastating in other parts of the country. I am forwarding a message from one of my listservs for 'just in case.'
Other resources are available on the site of the Northeast Document Conservation Center at http://www.nedcc.org/services/disaster.php There is a phone number for 24/7 phone calls and "Additional Resources." Of course, disaster recovery goes better if you are prepared, check out "dPlan" an online tool to help you create a disaster plan.

Heritage Emergency National Task Force resources help archives, libraries, historic sites, museums, and the public cope with damage from disasters. Please share the following resources with colleagues affected by recent hurricanes, tropical storms, and tornadoes.
Submit damage reports and find contact information for state cultural and emergency management agencies at the Task Force Hurricanes and Tropical Storms 2008 Web page
Each of the following resources is available from this page.
Expert advice for libraries, museums, and the public on rescuing treasures from water damage is available as free streaming video. Practical tips on safety, salvage priorities, and equipment help the viewer get started on the rescue of photographs, books, documents, and other valued items.
The award-winning Field Guide to Emergency Response and Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel provide clear and practical advice on dealing with disasters that affect cultural resources. An instructional DVD accompanies the Field Guide. A rapid collections assessment form and supply lists are available to
download.
Guide to Navigating FEMA and SBA Disaster Aid for Cultural Institutions (in print or online) leads cultural institutions through the process of applying to FEMA and the Small Business Administration for assistance after major disasters. All of the necessary forms are included. * Working with Emergency Responders: Tips for Cultural Institutions (poster) provides practical advice on how to find and build relationships with local emergency responders, what responders need to know to better protect cultural institutions, and how to interact with emergency response professionals before, during, and after an emergency.
Save Your Treasures the Right Way provides simple guidelines for the public to help them salvage family photographs and other heirlooms. Streaming video illustrates the guidelines. Both resources are ideal for use online or in newspaper and newsletter articles.
Heritage Emergency National Task Force: The Task Force is a partnership of 40 national service organizations and federal agencies created to protect cultural heritage from the damaging effects of natural disasters and other emergencies. The Task Force was founded in 1995 and is co-sponsored by Heritage Preservation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Heritage Preservation: For over 30 years, Heritage Preservation has been the national, nonprofit advocate for the proper care of all cultural heritage-in museums, libraries, homes, and town squares.

Message-ID: <7.0.0.16.1.20080922122332.039e5e58@libraryconnection.info>
Hi, All -
We're interested in learning the "mechanics" used by libraries that
sponsor "food for fines" days (weeks, etc.). Specifically:
* Is there any attempt to match the cost of the donated food with
the fines due?
* If your collected fines normally revert to your municipality's
General Fund, have you had problems with the local government about
"converting" that cash to canned goods?
* Have you extended the concept to non-perishable items, as many
food banks do?
* Have you run into the problem of people withholding book returns
to wait for the food collection periods?
Thanks for your assistance -

Subject: [Conntech] SUSHI webinar on Oct. 2nd
Message-ID: <67C2C223C41C9943B29CACBE0B2A0B400150C613@EXCHANGE1.facstaff.ccsu.edu>
ACRL New England's Continuing Education Committee and ITIG have
purchased access to the NISO Webinar on SUSHI.
Title: SUSHI: Beyond Trial into Real Use
Date: October 2, 2008
Time: 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)
Sandwiches and Sushi will be served at Noon.
Location: College of Holy Cross, Dinand Library, Faculty Room, on the
second floor of the library
Contact: Bob Scheier, (rscheier@holycross.edu)
Description: After a very successful trial use period, The Standardized
Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative (SUSHI) Protocol was officially
published as a standard in 2007 (ANSI/NISO Z39.93-2007). SUSHI defines
an automated request and response model for the harvesting of electronic
resource usage data, using a Web services framework. It is intended to
replace the time-consuming user-mediated collection of usage data
reports. In August 2008, a Standing Committee was approved to assume
maintenance responsibilities of this standard, including encouraging the
further use and adoption of this extensible, lightweight standard.
Adam Chandler, co-chair of the original working group and now of the
SUSHI Standing Committee , will introduce this webinar, bringing to the
audience a technical perspective and sharing more about the relationship
between SUSHI and COUNTER and possible next steps for this standard.
Hana Levay will then give a real-library perspective, sharing with the
audience one example of how SUSHI was not only implemented at the
University of Washington, but how it is being applied in a real way,
including:
* Setting up SUSHI (in this case, using III)
* The kinds of reports being supplied via SUSHI
* Common issues
* Integrating usage statistics into collection development
assessment tool via an ERM
* Cost per use
* Examples of how usage reports are being used in decision making
Intended Audience:
This webinar is for librarians, publishers, and content providers who
are interested in implementing SUSHI and learning more about how .
Speakers
Adam Chandler
Coordinator, Service Design Group, Cornell University Library, and
Co-Chair, SUSHI Maintenance Advisory Group
Adam will be discussing the underlying technical and political
relationship between NISO, SUSHI, and COUNTER, past, present and future.
Hana Levay
Information Resources Librarian, Collection Management Services,
University of Washington Libraries
Hana will share with attendees about the application of SUSHI in a
real library -- from implementation to the kind of reports SUSHI enables
them to receive to how the protocol is creating opportunities for
analysis (including how that plays into collection management decision
making).
Background
The Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative (SUSHI) Protocol
was officially published as a standard in 2007 (ANSI/NISO Z39.93-2007).
SUSHI defines an automated request and response model for the harvesting
of electronic resource usage data utilizing a Web services framework. It
is intended to replace the time-consuming user-mediated collection of
usage data reports. The protocol was designed to be both generalized and
extensible, meaning it could be used to retrieve a variety of usage
reports. An extension designed specifically to work with COUNTER reports
is provided with the standard, as these are expected to be the most
frequently retrieved usage reports.
The SUSHI Standing Committee and its roster were officially approved by
NISO's Business Information Topic Committee in August 2008.
Maintenance of Z39.93-2007, The Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting
Initiative (SUSHI) Protocol
The designated Standing Committee is responsible for:
* Responding to queries on the interpretation of this standard.
* Reviewing suggestions for the improvement of the standard.
* Maintaining a current list of inquiries and responses that may be
used for potential future enhancements of this standard.
* Maintaining components of the SUSHI protocol, including WSDL,
schema, and website.
* Ensuring that official SUSHI schemas and related documents are
hosted on a high-availability site with persistent URLs suitable for
referencing and use by implementations of SUSHI clients and servers.
* Initiating revisions to the standard as required in order to meet
the needs of the SUSHI user community. Such revisions will be done in
accordance with NISO's procedures for developing and revising standards.
* Reaching out to and educating for stakeholders.

Program Content:
Fairfield Beach: the Library, is a choose-your-own-adventure movie that
introduces library services, resources, and facilities in an
entertaining and unexpected way. With the aid of clickers, students vote
for the scenes they want to see next, momentarily transforming the
classroom into a movie theater and a ballot box. Ramona Islam and Leslie
Porter, who wrote the screenplay, will explain the challenges they faced
and the successes they experienced in customizing the movie to their
audience.
Lei Wang will share Yale Medical Library's experience in distributing
their online instruction videos as podcasts. He will discuss his
hardware and software setup, technical issues, his budget for the
project and he will present his analysis of usage statistics to prove
the cost-effectiveness of the project.
Susan Slaga and Deborah Herman produced over a dozen short screencasts
using Adobe Captivate and some videos on topics ranging from using
digital course reserves to searching article databases and the library
catalog. As part of a larger podcasting initiative in 2007 and 2008, the
CCSU Elihu Burritt Library extended access to these for viewing on a
video iPod and other video-enabled mobile devices. The presentation
covers the technical aspects of optimizing library screencasts and
vidcasts for the iPod, including the software used, costs involved,
options for making vidcasts available to students, promotion, and
evaluation of the usage and effectiveness as a learning tool.

The Connecticut State Library, Division of Library Development, presents:
Managing Your Digital Collections: An Introduction to CONTENTdm(r)
Do you have plans to digitize your historic and special collections, such as photos, diaries, maps, newspapers, videos or others? How do you plan to provide access to them? And what are your long term storage plans for your digital assets?
You're invited to join us for a presentation about solutions for libraries and organizations that are managing their special collections within the context of digitizing, access, and archiving. You'll learn from what organizations have successfully achieved using OCLC's Digital
Collection Services and what we are doing in Connecticut. An overview of the digital life cycle that will help you get organized and learn the key steps to special collections that will be digitized or have been digitized. Much of the success revolves around the use of CONTENTdm(r). Hundreds of libraries and cultural heritage organizations use CONTENTdm(r) Digital Collection Management Software from OCLC to share treasures from their special collections on the Web and through the global reach of Worldcat.org.
Join Ron Gardner*OCLC Digital Services Consultant*for an in-depth look at CONTENTdm(r), the Digital Archive, Connexion digital import, and including what's new with the fall release of CONTENTdm(r). Ron Gardner, MLS, has been working with libraries and organizations for
years. Currently he helps library staff learn about the OCLC Digital Collection Services, especially how CONTENTdm(r) can be the solution they need for digital assets management. He'll show examples of how current CONTENTdm(r) users are successfully using the software.
Intended Audience: Staff that will benefit are mostly from libraries and other cultural heritage organizations that need to organize and manage their digital resources, as well as provide Web access to their collections. This session will highlight organizations that are currently using CONTENTdm(r) and other Digital Collection Services as well as those that want to explore their possibilities for their own digital collections.

Hi,
If you would be willing to share, off list, some of the sources your library
uses to purchase computer tutorials/instructional DVDs, we'd really
appreciate it. We found some titles on Baker & Taylor Title Source 3 under
"Web Wise Seniors" DVD series, but tell us what sources you find the most
helpful-online, or catalog sources. We don't want to buy the actual software
itself, more tutorials such as "Windows Vista for Dummies," "PowerPoint:
Creating a Presentation," etc. Sources for both Windows and MACs would be
desirable. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Please send to:

Hi. The link below shows last night's (9/25/08) 6 p.m. Channel 3
news story about Governor John Rowland giving a presentation at
Russell Library, Middletown, to open the Fall 2008 Job and Career
Series. The 11 p.m. news carried a more detailed story about the
workshop itself. The title of Governor Rowland's talk was "Handling
a Dramatic Reversal of Fortune and Moving On." The intent was to
help job seekers deal effectively with their dilemmas, put their best
foot forward and move on. John Rowland's presentation was
outstanding and warmly received by a full audience. Best, Michelle

Message-ID: <013001c92236$88340a20$6630810a@CLC3>
Just a reminder about the first workshops in the 2008-2009 CLC/OCLC Direct
Training Calendar, both taught by Virginia Commonwealth's Dan Ream at
Farmington Library.
Google Advanced Tools is scheduled for 1:00 to 4:00 on Tuesday, September
30.
MYSPACE, FACEBOOK, AND SOCIAL NETWORKING TOOLS FOR LIBRARIES is scheduled
for 9:00 to Noon on Wednesday, October 1.
Go to http://www.ctlibrarians.org/#homeOCLC to register.
Google Advanced Tools:
Google has developed a wide variety of tools to supplement the search tool
found at Google.com, including Google Scholar, Google Book Search, Google
Blog Search, Google Customized Search Engines, Google Language Tools,
Blogger.com, the Google home page service, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Earth,
and even more. This course is devoted to introducing the capabilities of
each of these tools. Google tools bring new possibilities to your desktop at
no cost.
See how to:
* Search only sites you know and trust
* Use their instant calculator
* View aerial photos of your neighborhood
* Get directions to Baltimore with a stop in Annapolis first
* Start blogging
* Create web pages that you can publish without cost
* Get a quick simple language translation
MYSPACE, FACEBOOK, AND SOCIAL NETWORKING TOOLS FOR LIBRARIES:
Social networking Web resources have become extremely popular with teenage
and college-aged Internet users. Librarians need to understand what goes on
in these tools in order to better serve their clientele. Some libraries are
creating pages and offering services via these sites. We will have an
overview of how these tools work, how teens and college students use them,
and how libraries are attempting to reach their users via these tools.
Topics covered include:
* Introduction to MySpace, Facebook, and other popular social
networking sites
* Search capabilities of each
* How college and public libraries are using these tools to reach
their users

Subject: [Conntech] Meeting Room Policy
Message-ID: <803E59729BA8430290C7F3B811BA0BC8@torringtonlib.org>
I am in need of info regarding use of meeting rooms. We recently recaptured some space to use for library programs and are now being deluged with requests from the public to use it.
I know it is common not to charge non-profits, and for us, library use of the room will take priority, and usage will be limited to the library's hours of operation.
What I would like to know from librarylanders is:
--What do you charge for use of the room by other groups and
--How do you handle those who want to use the room on a "regular" basis, i.e. every Saturday or every Tuesday at such-and-such a time, if it may conflict at some point with library use of the room?
We're thinking of addressing those requests with a caveat that they may get bumped if the library needs the room for a program or other event. You may reply off-list to: kbw@torringtonlibrary.org
Thanks in advance. You are always so very helpful.

Martin Scorsese: "Saving our film heritage should not be limited only to
commercially produced films. Home movies do not just capture the important
private moments of our family's lives, but they are historical and cultural
documents as well. Consider Abraham Zapruder's 8mm film that recorded the
assassination of President Kennedy or Nickolas Muray's famously vibrant
color footage of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera shot with his 16mm camera.
Imagine how different our view of history would be without these precious
films. Home Movie Day is a celebration of these films and the people who
shot them. I urge anyone with an interest in learning more about how to care
for and preserve their own personal memories to join in the festivities
being offered in their community..."

Subject: [Conntech] Results of overdue fines query
Message-ID: <283251.68963.qm@web45707.mail.sp1.yahoo.com>
A hearty "thank you" to the approximately two dozen people who responded to my query regarding overdue fines. Here's a summary of the results:
Overdue Fines Summary
Books, cds, audiobooks, magazines: overdue fines range from $0.05 to $0.25 per day, and one library charges $0.25 per day after a ?2-4 week grace period?. The average is $0.12.
The maximum fine for ?regular? items that don?t fit into a special category below ranges from $1.00 to $10.00, with an average of $3.94. One library charges up to the replacement cost of the item, and one library charges a maximum of ½ the replacement cost of the item. Two libraries charge a $5.00 processing fee for lost items.
Two libraries charge $0.25 per day for overdue cds
Fines for juvenile (J) and young adult (YA) books range from $0.01 to $.10 per day. The average is $0.94.
New books and new magazines are fined at $0.10 - $0.25 per day, with an average of $0.15.
One library charges $0.25 for overdue J and YA videos and dvds.
The fee for art prints is $0.25/day with no maximum.
A library that lends reference books charges $1 per day, up to a $10 max.
The average for overdue interlibrary loans is $0.66 per day.
One library charges $.10, up to a max of $1.50 for overdue magazines.
One library charges $0.50 for overdue audiobooks, up to $5 max.
The reported fine for playways is $1 up to a max of $10.
Late museum passes are fined $1 to $10 per day, with an average of $5.00. The maximum fine ranged from $10 to the cost of the pass.
Express/fast track/red hot books range from $0.25 to $2 per day; the average fine is $0.96 per day.
Late videos and dvds are fined $0.05 to $3.00 per day. The $1.33 average is skewed by the library that charges $0.05 and a library that charges $0.15. The maximum fine for videos and dvds ranges from $1.00 to $15.00; the average maximum fine is $6.57 per day.
Ann Marie White shared this information: At the Oliver Wolcott Library in Litchfield we have a "no fines policy" and use a conscience box instead (the box is totally voluntary). Our experience is that we make the same amount of money from the conscience box than we did with the fines, and we feel strongly that in actuality we make more money because people are now more willing to give us an annual appeal donation. We do place blocks on people's records if the item goes to the "lost" status and we're very firm on that since we are so lenient in the "overdue" stage.
If you or anyone is considering this option, I would be happy to discuss what we've found further. Most are benefits although there are a few negatives to consider.
Ann Marie
And, from Barbara Butler of Tolland, here's a librarian's nightmare :
We recently raised our fines from $.05 to $.15 per day on print materials, audiocassettes, and music CDs. Videos and DVDs have always been $1.00 per day. We had a $5.00 max on most materials except DVDs/videos are $10.00. The Town Council raised the max amount to the replacement value of an item. I told them that the system would not do this, so the Town Manager said to raise the max to $20.00 and report back to him on how it was working out. We are keeping track of every item with a fine of between $4.00-$20.00 because I cannot charge someone $20.00 on an item that cost $7.99, etc.

Please don't anyone take this personally.
Just to be accurate in handling patron questions.
Former Presidents still are referred with the title of President.
Does the same hold true for other elected officials such as John
Rowland? And does it hold true if the official serves time in jail for
offenses committed while they held public office?
Does it hold true for, say former, mayors, Senators, etc.?
Guess it's in Emily Post's?
Bob

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for the information. That's a great distinction to be able to
point out to a patron. It's a weird place to negotiate when dealing
with former public officials who are convicted of one thing or another.
As a librarian it's good to know what etiquette is appropriate and the
point you make may be helpful when hosting former public officials who
resigned under less than favorable conditions.
Thanks again!
Bob
