Online Outreach & Marketing - Apr. 17th (UCONN Torrington)
In the Web 2.0 environment, libraries need to learn to reach beyond traditional ideas of outreach and take advantage of new tools for connecting with their users online. During this workshop we'll discuss a variety of ideas for libraries to get information out into spaces beyond their library web sites and to connect with their users on their own turf.
**This is a hands-on session, so come prepared with information about your library, services and events to get started with your own online outreach plan. **

Creating Word Documents with Style(s) - Apr. 24th (Wilton Library)
In this half day workshop you will learn about the style(s) feature in Microsoft Word. The style(s) feature allows you to easily format long documents with ease, finesse and consistency. The "look and feel" of a paragraph is defined once and then applied throughout the document. This "look and feel" could include font, size, style (bold italic), spacing, page breaks, etc. You will learn how to apply existing, and new styles, modify them, and copy them between documents.

To Public Library Directors:
Connecticard loans totaled 4,740,954 for the 2008-2009 year (which ended in last February). This was the highest annual total ever recorded and about a 3% increase over last year.
Payments to public libraries participating in the 2008-2009 Connectcard program (which ended at the end of February) should be made soon. Information on the amount of payments to libraries and the net-plus loan statistics have been posted to WebJunction CT here:
http://ct.webjunction.org/510/articles/content/434245 (payments)
http://ct.webjunction.org/72/articles/content/434263 (net-plus loans)
Library Directors will be receiving email messages from me soon with information on your library's CCard payment, loans made, and borrows. You will also receive a Connecticard Expenditure Report form for 2007-2008 which should be printed, completed, signed, and mailed back to me.
Thanks go out to all those libraries participating in the Connecticard program and to all those staff who fill out the monthly CCard forms. If you have any questions, let me know.

Message-ID: <97c6e0b20904020834t37e5af10kf32435b1db51cecd@mail.gmail.com>
Thomas Hollowell was living in Morocco as a Peace Corps volunteer in 2003
when he met a Moroccan physician who had been held as a POW for 25 years by
the Polisario, a rebel movement working for the independence of Western
Sahara . Hollowell?s recently
published book, *Allah's Garden *(Tales Press),* *grew out of his developing
relationship with the doctor.
*About the book: After enduring 25 years of forced labor in the Sahara
> Desert, becoming one of the world's longest held POWs, Dr. Benmansour is
> released to his homeland of Morocco. In a drastically changed world, he
> meets a maverick from the west; a former environmental volunteer turned
> expatriate living in the mountains. Although unlikely companions, the two
> delve into the truths of a forgotten land, human suffering and an ignored
> war. The unfolding of events takes them deeper into the Sahara sands than
> they could have anticipated; a land venerated by Muslims as Allah's Garden
> . ( http://thomashollowell.com/index.html)*
*Allah?s Garden* is now available through Ingram and Baker and Taylor.
Mr. Hollowell will be participating in the 2009 Summer Institute held by
Yale?s Programs in International Educational Resources (PIER) of the Council
on Middle East Studies, MacMillian Center. He will discuss his book at the
New Haven Public Library on July 15, and he has expressed an interest in
speaking at other Connecticut libraries during his visit.
If your library would like to host a program with the author (he will be in
Connecticut July 13-30), please get in touch with him directly at *

Connecticut Library Community:
We have just received news of the Appropriations Committee budget that was released today. It is online at:
http://www.cga.ct.gov/ofa/Documents/OFABudget/2009/Committee/Education.pdf (look on page 14).
In the budget -
The funding for the service centers has been restored!
InfoAnytime was given back the $42,000 CLC has requested!
and CLC was given back the $17,000 cut this year.
The bonding package will be released later by the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee.
Overall, great news.
Thanks to all who have supported the library budget by contacting their elected officials.
Remember that this is not the final budget. It isn't official until voted on by the entire legislature and signed by the Governor.
Best,
Sharon Brettschneider

Yesterday, the NY Times ran a story about increased use of libraries on the
front page above the fold. This is the third story they have featured on
this topic in the past few months, and the second in the last few weeks.
This one is interesting in that it does not just cite the many more people
doing on-line job searches and borrowing materials in lieu of buying them.
Instead it focuses on the impact on staff, since many of these patrons have
no computer skills, may be homeless and present behavioral problems. The
article reports a major increase in thefts on and of library property. One
library stopped taking cash because of frequent robberies. Worth a read,
especially for urban libraries.

Subject: [Conntech] Spanish Language Collections
Message-ID: <185CF45A83E8F64190A4EEA23B00A656012541D4@Ex2K3.TOW.LOC>
Hi everyone,
We are interested in developing a Spanish-language collection in our library. For those libraries that have already established a foreign-language collection, please consider answering a few questions to help us get this going.
1. What is the bulk of your collection - fiction v. nonfiction? What are some of your most popular authors/types of non-fiction?
2. What resources were used to develop the collection - reviews, websites, outreach?
3. How large is the current collection and/or budget?
4. Where is the collection located within your library?
5. How is the collection circulating?
6. Is there anything you know now that you wish you had known when the project began?
Please reply off list; we will gather the information and post a combined message.
Thank you.

**PLEASE NOTE: The following workshops will be canceled if the required number of registrations are not received**

Subject: [Conntech] Event for Book CLubs: Year of Magical Thinking
Message-ID: <200904081428558.SM02748@IllCove>
Hello,
Alice Pentz and I are posting this as an activity for any library book
clubs/groups that have read THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING. There is a special
matinee on 5/2 for book club members. This is not an endorsement or
advertisement for Theaterworks. There is also an event with the Harriett
Beecher Stowe Center, in case any of the libraries with Museum Passes to
that institution wish to promote the event.
THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING
A play by Joan Didion, based on her memoir.
Directed by Steve Campo
April 17 through May 24, 2009 at THEATERWORKS
In this compelling stage adaptation, Joan Didion (portrayed by Annalee
Jefferies) takes audiences back over the year when she abruptly lost her
husband, Hartford-native John Gregory Dunne, and their daughter Quintana
Roo. Applying her fiercely logical brain to a situation that defied logic,
Didion's words lead us on a quiet exploration of that "magical year" when
grief came to call.
BOOK CLUB MATINEE!
Saturday May 2, 2:30 p.m.
Discounted ticket rate $25 for book club members
We encourage book lovers and book club members to read Didion's memoir and
attend this matinee performance, followed by a book club-style discussion.
Moderated by Tina Panik from the Avon Public Library.
SPECIAL EVENT with THE HARRIET BEECHER STOWE CENTER!
Post-show Discussion with Katherine Kane, Executive Director of the Stowe
Center
Wednesday May 6, 7:30 p.m.
Discounted ticket rate $25
Ms. Kane facilitates a discussion on how Joan Didion and Harriet Beecher
Stowe used their art to explore and express their grief. Having
experienced the unexpected loss of her first husband, Ms. Kane brings a
truly unique insight into this emotional terrain.

Dear list members,
This is a two-part question for libraries that circulate Playaways:
Do you shelve the case with the player inside it, or do you take out the
player for safe keeping and shelve the empty case?
If you remove the players for safe keeping, have you figured out a good way
of storing them such that you can easily find the one you need?
I will summarize results for the list.

A poetry reading by Trumbull Resident and poet, Dick Allen, from his latest
collection, Present Vanishing, at The Trumbull Library
Trumbull, CT - On Wednesday, April 22, at 6:30 pm, the Trumbull Library is
proud to present Trumbull resident and poet extraordinaire, Dick Allen. An
acclaimed performer of his poetry, Dick will read from his seventh
collection, Present Vanishing. Dick's works are often called "poetry for
people who don't like poetry" and he will read some poems set in Trumbull!
Present Vanishing wanders through a variety of topics-from the Buddha to
Elvis, from frustrations with the internet to the art of buttering bread-and
emerges full of gratitude. There are lovely moments of pure musicality in
the shorter poems organized in couplets or quatrains. Gracefully assuming
many shapes and sizes, these poems are likely to please readers seeking
incarnations of the spirits of Whitman and Creeley at their most joyful. -
Publishers Weekly.
Come celebrate poetry month! Copies of the books will be available for
purchase. Refreshments will be served. Seating is limited for this free
event so reserve your seat by contacting the Main Library at 203-452-5197 to
register or on-line at www.trumbullct-library.org

Attention Public Library Directors
You should have received an email report last week on your library?s
2009 CCard payment and loan activity. If you did not, please let me
know and I can resend the email or send it by snail mail. You should
also have received an Expenditure Report form for 2008 which you will
have to complete and send to me.
As a reminder for 2009-2010 monthly CCard reports, Connecticard
regulations require that libraries only count transactions where
non-residents have presented a valid Connecticard borrower card.
Interlibrary loans are not considered Connecticard transactions. See

Free HeritageQuest Online Database Training
On June 29th and 30th, Beth Reiten Senior Training Specialist for
ProQuest will conduct half day training sessions for HeritageQuest
Online. HeritageQuest Online is a unique resource for both genealogical
and historical researchers. In each session, we will cover the modules:
U.S. Census, Books, PERSI, Freedman's Bank, Revolutionary War, and
Serial Set and explore finding and manipulating results. In addition we
will learn how to best print images using Adobe Acrobat and how to
maximize the utility of the notebook feature. We will also work with the
Census Book help, maps and census forms. Participants will take away
experience with genealogical research and supporting handouts to help
refresh their memory after the session.
U.S. Federal Census, 1790-1930: The page images for the entire census,
1790-1930, are included in HeritageQuest Online. Many corresponding name
indexes are also available. These are completely new indexes created by
ProQuest. In addition to the ability to search by name, our census
records can be searched by place of birth, age, ethnicity and other
variables making this the most versatile census searching available
online. Researchers can quickly see all African-Americans or all persons
born in Ireland living in a state or county.
PERSI? - The PERiodical Source Index: A comprehensive subject index
covering more than 6,600 genealogy and local history periodicals written
in English and French (Canada) since 1800. PERSI? provides the
researcher the ability to search on surnames, locations, and
methodologies as well as the ability to browse the journals by title and
keyword. There are more than 2.1 million article citations currently
available, with updates occurring annually.
Freedman's Bank Records: At the close of the Civil War, the Freedman's
Savings & Trust Company was the primary bank for America's freed slaves
and others from 1865-1874. This HeritageQuest collection documents more
than 105,000 bank depositors and over 480,000 of their dependants and
heirs. It is considered one of the most important resources for
African-American genealogical research.
Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files:
This collection details records of 80,000+ individuals who served in the
Revolutionary War and contains both genealogical and historical
information. Each veteran's file contains six or more pages on each
veteran and normally includes the veteran's former rank, unit, and
period of service, age or date of birth, residence, and
sometimes-genealogical information on other family members.
U.S. Serial Set: This collection offers a glimpseinto the people and
places on whose behalf Congressional action was sought during the period
1789-1969. Consisting of documents and reports prepared for the U.S.
Congress, it includes Private Relief Actions, Memorials, and Petitions.
The subject matter covered by this collection includes: pensions,
military and naval matters, claims of election fraud, public works
projects, immigration and naturalization, land grants, taxation, and
many types of monetary claims made by individuals and businesses.

We have lots of plastic AV-containers that we'd like to pass along to
any interested library.
But no, to answer the first question that has popped into your mind, we
don't have any CD albums (for books on CD).
We do have just about everything else:
Plastic magazine covers (locking and non-locking)
Audio cassette cases (for works with 1,2,3,4,6,8 cassettes)
Videocassette cases
If you need something else please ask and I'll see if we have it.

The public is invited to an all-ages performance by Connecticut?s State
Troubador, Lara Herscovitch, on Tuesday, April 21, 6-7pm at The New Haven
Public Library, 133 Elm St.
Appointed by the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism, Herscovitch
will serve as our very own ambassador of music and song at a number of state
events over the course of her two-year tenure. She is a singer-songwriter
whose original music blends acoustic/folk with pop, jazz, blues and Latin
styles. Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange rates Lara?s latest CD, Juror Number
13, ?among the best folk releases of the year.?
)
In addition to her work as a professional musician, Herscovitch is active in
public policy and social work. She has worked in the U.S., Latin America and
Asia on behalf of disadvantaged individuals, and her deep appreciation for
and understanding of the importance of cultural diversity and global issues
is threaded into her music. ?The abundance of singer-songwriters on the
scene today requires a musician to really shine to rise above the crowd, and
Herscovitch does that from the first line of the first song,? says Taconic
Press.
There is no charge for this all-ages musical presentation, and free parking
is available. Coffee will be provided courtesy of Blue State Coffee on Wall
St., New Haven. Seating is limited, so make your reservations now at
www.troubador.eventbrite.com or call 946-8835.

Message-ID: <879A80D9E5BF4DC4BF27E6DC6727BA0A@cmlcat>
I heard back from 11 libraries. Of those, 7 shelve the cases unlocked and
with the units inside, and report no problems with theft. (3 of these
specified they shelve the cases near the desk.) Two other libraries shelve
the units in "locking cases" or cases with "locking clips." The remaining 2
libraries shelve the cases empty and store the units separately. One of
them uses 2 drawers, with trays inside to organize further, for a collection
of 50 titles including adult fiction and nonfiction, YA, and juvenile
titles. The other uses long, narrow plastic baskets that someone apparently
found at Staples or Wal-Mart, allowing the units to be filed in title order.
This is also a collection of about 50 titles.
Many thanks to all those who responded and shared information!

Hi Jim,
I'm Roxann and work for Joan Overfield at the
DiMenna-Nyselius Library at Fairfield University. In response to your
question about scanners in labs this is what we have found out by
experience : Currently, we have in our computer labs at Fairfield
University library basic HP scanners for simple scanning...usually
patrons scan photos into documents like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint
presentations. We do have proprietary ADF scanners for high end use
like our digital collections . These scanners are used by specially
trained library staff and not for regular patron use like the lab
scanners. The basic lab scanners open from the top by a plastic lid
and can be somewhat fragile. The ADF scanners are a higher end product
and come with a variety of potential issues, for example, the ADF
cover/lid is even more fragile that the flat bed scanners ,are costly to
repair/replace and the ADF at times can malfunction. Also, OCR-
special software is often needed for patrons who wish to scan in text (
books) and it is costly to purchase OCR software. The lower end OCR
software still is not up to recognizing all characters correctly even
when performing a simple scan and can be frustrating for patrons. For
the most part we have both types of HP scanners and also higher end
priority Fujitsu scanners. At this time the basic HP scanner is the
best bet for the labs.

Any other information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Cross-posted; please excuse duplication. Please forward as appropriate.
Everyone:
Access to Gale resources on iCONN is restored. The issue arose as a result of changing to a default relevancy ranking for search results. The repair is a two-stage process; for now, results will sort by publication date. Soon, the relevancy ranking will be restored. We do not anticipate any disruption in service as Gale completes the process.
Thanks to those who brought this issue to our attention and thanks to you all for your patience.

Forgot to mention that BookSeller Book Outlet discounts all
books at 75%. They do have an online store but I don't have
the link here and didn't find it on a quick search.
Also, http://www.bookcloseouts.com/default.asp?N=0 has
fairly decent prices and we have used them in the past with
great success.

Hi Jim,
West Hartford has a document scanner in our lab. The scanner is a Xerox
DocuMate 520 and it is networked using an Axis 70U external document
server. The scanner can be controlled by a web interface, accessible
from any of our lab workstations. Patrons can scan the image and then
either edit, save or print it from their workstation. There are also
options to allow the document server to either print, email or FTP the
scanned document, but we haven't implemented those yet. It seems
easiest to just capture it back at your workstation and then save, email
or print. Since I blew most of the budget on this project with the
scanner and document server, we are using freeware image editing and OCR
software on the lab workstations to let users manipulate their images.
I don't have a clear handle on what users are scanning because I'm not
usually on public service, but I have assisted people with scanning text
documents, diplomas, photographs, and signatures. I believe most
patrons are happy with the service, since they see it as an "above and
beyond" kind of thing... Even when there is a glitch or two and users
get frustrated, they still seem HAPPY that we have the scanner at all.
Good luck, and if you've got specific questions about our set up, don't
hesitate to contact me.

Friends,
I spoke to library staff today at four libraries (Waterford, Torrington, Stony Creek and Cheshire) who were all very positive and got a long note from Windsor Locks, which follows:
Hi, Rick.
We switched to W.T. Cox last year and just did our first reorder. The prices are much cheaper for the periodicals that we order (we used to use EBSCO) and the customer service is very prompt. They have a very nice online claim and renewal service that is very easy to use. The only complaint I have about them is that I ordered 2 years of about a dozen of our magazines and the renewal only came through with one year. However, when I contacted them they checked into it immediately and will be sending us an additional invoice for the 2nd year, so there is no problem.
W.T. Cox told me that different vendors make different deals with the publishers, which is why they are able to offer some magazines more cheaply than EBSCO. EBSCO told me that this is not true, that the publishers charge what they charge, but many of the prices ARE cheaper with W.T. Cox. I would definitely recommend them.

Since I had a few requests for the freeware products we are using in our
lab, I figured I'd post to the list.
Our freeware OCR is SimpleOCR (http://www.simpleocr.com/Download.asp).
As with all OCR software I've used, it is far from perfect. Careful
review of the document is needed to fix errors in translation and
formatting is usually lost as welll.
Our freeware image editing software is Irfanview
(http://www.irfanview.com/). Aside from the normal cropping, resizing,
sharpening, etc. this product lets you covert file types (.jpg, .gif,
.tiff, .bmp, etc.), make PDFs, create multi-page images, create
slideshows and a bunch of other fun stuff.

Dear Library Colleagues,
April 22nd will be here soon. Why is that important? It's the date of the
American Friends of Kenya fund raiser at the Keeney Memorial Cultural
Center. We've planned an evening (6-9 PM) filled with raffles, pictures,
music and speakers from Kenya who will share their unique stories.
We are pleased to welcome a visit by Dr. Raouf Mama, the
internationally-known story teller from Benin, who will wind up the
evening's events.
http://www.curbstone.org/authdetail.cfm?AuthID=164
Raffle items will include: autographed books, restaurant and spa gift
certificates, art and handmade objects, and gift baskets.
You'll be able to speak with native Kenyans, view spectacular
African-themed quilts, and enjoy snacks, wine and beer.
We look forward to seeing you there and being able to share with you the
things about Kenya that have captured our hearts. We hope you'll come and
support AFK's library initiatives. You may even be inspired to travel with
us in years to come.
See you there!

Message-ID: <1240238620_98@lucius>
Our library is in the midst of a controversy with a local church over
posting religious notices on our bulletin board. Our posted policy says
that we don't post notices about partisan politics or that are explicitly
religious in nature because our space is limited and we are unable to
guarantee access to all sides.
We are an association library.
I would be interested in hearing how other libraries handle this.

Hi Denise,
We recently revised our bulletin board, meeting room and exhibit
policies. I talked extensively with the Intellectual Freedom Office of
the ALA and the chair of Intellectual Freedom for CLA about these issues.
My understanding (and I would be happy to send along to you some of the
court cases that was sent to me)- is that while in the past this was a
common practice for libraries, that libraries cannot restrict access to
religious organizations. We must allow religious organizations the same
access to these spaces once they are made "public". They are made
"public spaces" as soon as you allow any outside organization
(non-library) to put one piece of paper on the bulletin board.
We cannot restrict content. We can only restrict very concrete things
like: size of flyer, duration on the board, etc.
You can read all of our policies online at our website www.owlibrary.org
then click on "About OWL" tab and select "Policies".
Regards,
Ann Marie

The following workshops have been scheduled for May 2009. To register
access the Continuing Education Calendar of Events at
http://evanced.info/cslib/evanced/eventcalendar.asp
Introduction to PowerPoint 2007 - May 4th (MLSC)
Would you like to improve your ability to get your message across to
other people? PowerPoint presentations are an exciting way to
communicate your message to an audience. You can master most aspects of
PowerPoint in this day-long workshop. You can learn how to create a
simple and colorful presentation for use with the public or your
colleagues. Each participant will have time to work on his/her own
presentation.
Teaching Technology - May 11 (Wilton)
Have you needed to teach a technology class but didn't know how to
start? This half-day workshop will help get you going and help you get
beyond the fear factor. We'll discuss the philosophy of teaching adults.
Though the emphasis in this workshop will be on teaching technology many
of the concepts can be used to teach other skills.Topics include:
organizing the information, preparing presentation materials, creating
handouts and more
Word 2007 - May 18th (Darien PL)
Devote a day to mastering the topic in this workshop and multiply the
efficiency with which you can work in Microsoft Word 2007. Learn how to
do mail merges the easy way. Eliminate inconsistent tabs and indents,
create and format tables with ease, and discover great tips on applying
attractive customized formats. In addition workshop participants will
explore how to change the tools on toolbars, and work with graphical
objects in their document.
Free Webinar: Health & Wellness & Business Resource Center - May 18th
(ONLINE)
Stacey Knibloe, Library Training Specialist for Thomson Gale will
provide online web based training to library staff on Monday, May 18th.
The database covered in the session include the: Health and Wellness
Resource Center and the Business and Company Resource Center. The
training is open to all Connecticut library staff.
Weeding in the Garden of Good & Evil - May 20th (Welles-Turner ML)
Weeding your library?s collection can be a daunting task but it is a
critical component to providing excellent library service to your
community. This workshop will give you the tools and enthusiasm that you
will need to assess your collection and make decisions on what material
needs to be weeded out of it. Our approach to weeding is that it isn?t
the irresponsible disposal of the library?s property, but rather a
part of the public service to borrowers, that of maintaining the best
possible collection for the community.
Library 2.0 Overview - May 27th (Simsbury PL)
What is Library 2.0 and why is it important? Loosely defined Library
2.0 describes an approach to library service that is interactive,
collaborative, and driven by user needs and expectations. In this
workshop we?ll explore the basics of Library 2.0. We will also explore
a selection of Library 2.0 tools (Librarything, Flickr, Del.icio.us,
Wiki and more) with plenty of hands-on time to practice. In addition
participants will create a class Wiki about how to use these tools in
the library and how to teach patrons how to use them.
RSS in Libraries - May 29th (UCONN Torrington)
RSS feeds are everywhere these days - on news web sites, blogs, social
networking sites, and if you're lucky, in your library catalog. But what
does this really mean and how do we take advantage of this magic
technology? In this class we'll explore how RSS can help you gather
information more efficiently. And how RSS can help your library
distribute information. Topics covered will inlcude: RSS basics, using
feed reader software (Google Reader), tools that can distribute
information via RSS, creating RSS feeds & tools to add to your web
page.
Free Webinar: EBSCO History & Science Reference Center Database
Training - May 28th (ONLINE)
On Thursday, May 28th, Pamela Erickson, Implementation Specialist for
EBSCO Publishing, will conduct an online training session for the
History & Science Reference Center databases. The training session is
open to all Connecticut library staff.

Dear Denise,
If you are planning to attend the CLA conference on Thursday, there is a
program at 11:00 that you might be interested in:
Can Christmas Trees Get You into Trouble?
Religious Issues and Libraries | Temple
A panel including Steven Blackburn, director of the library
at the Hartford Seminary and attorney Michael Harrington
of Murtha Cullina LLP will answer questions about religious
issues and libraries. Are Christmas displays legal in public
places? Can you let the meeting rooms be used for a Bible
study sponsored by a local church? How about a display
that recruits new members for the Hare Krishnas?
How do you decide? Bring questions from your library!

Our library is in the midst of a controversy with a local church over
posting religious notices on our bulletin board. Our posted policy says
that we don't post notices about partisan politics or that are
explicitly religious in nature because our space is limited and we are
unable to guarantee access to all sides.
We are an association library.
I would be interested in hearing how other libraries handle this.
Thanks for your input.

Subject: [Conntech] Conservation ConneCTion Survey
Message-ID: <49EDAD6F.360B.00D7.0@cslib.org>
To Connecticut Libraries:
I am posting this on behalf of Conservation ConneCTion.
_______________________
Dear Colleague,
This month Conservation ConneCTion will be launching a new, statewide
electronic survey in an effort to gather information on the state of
collection care and preservation in Connecticut. The Connecting to
Collections Survey represents an historic opportunity for archives,
museums, libraries, and historical societies in Connecticut and is the
first attempt to prepare a comprehensive report of the condition and
preservation needs of collections in Connecticut. The survey can be
completed quickly and easily on-line, with no preparation or research,
relying on what staff and volunteers already know about their
collections.
Your participation is needed with this important project, and you are
urged to get involved!
- The survey results will be used extensively in the years ahead as
administrators, policy makers, government agencies, and private funding
sources make decisions that affect the preservation of collections.
- The survey will assess collections in all media, in all formats, in
all types of institutions throughout Connecticut. We need your help to
ensure that institutions of your type are accurately represented in the
final results.
- The results of this survey will show your preservation needs in the
context of those of your peers in a form that can be used as a tool for
raising institutional awareness and promoting long-range planning for
the care of collections.
- The results of this survey will support an implementation grant
application to assist Connecticut cultural institutions in meeting their
preservation needs.
- Institutions that tested the survey found it to be a thorough
self-assessment, helping them gather information that was useful for
long-range planning and funding requests.
- Individual responses will be kept completely confidential. Only the
aggregate data will be reported; your individual responses will never be
published or identified by Conservation ConneCTion.
Please visit the Conservation ConneCTion website at
www.conservationct.org and click on the ?Taking the Connecting to
Collections Survey? link on the left toolbar. Please complete the
survey by Monday, May 18, 2009. We encourage you to submit the survey
online. If you prefer, a printable version of the survey is available
at our website and may be mailed to the address below. If your
institution does not have Internet access, you may still complete this
survey online by visiting your local library (the survey takes about 30
minutes to complete). In appreciation of your time, your institution
will be entered into a raffle drawing to win a free membership in the
Connecticut League of History Organizations.
If you have any questions regarding this survey or about how
Conservation ConneCTion is working to help collecting institutions in
Connecticut please feel free to contact me. We appreciate the gift of
your time and information. Thank you for participating in this
important project to document the needs and condition of Connecticut?s
cultural heritage.

Dear Colleagues,
Recently the Appropriations Committee in the state legislature voted to restore funding in the State Library budget for the service centers, InfoAnytime and CLC. The budget must still be approved by the entire legislature so is far from being finalized. It is an important time for legislators hear from library supporters. A well-timed thank-you is one of the most important steps in effective advocacy.
Please call or email your local state representatives and state senators and tell them that you support the library funding in the Appropriations Committee budget. If your legislator is on the Appropriations Committee, thank them for their support.
A full list of state Senators and Representatives by town can be found here: www.cga.ct.gov/maps/townlist.asp

Good afternoon:
This message is being cross-posted - please excuse the duplication.
This is to inform you that the iCONN Bid for databases was awarded to
Gale. This will result in the following content changes on July 1:
1. Gale?s U.S. / World History and Science Resource Centers will
replace the corresponding titles from EBSCO.
2. Gale?s What Do I Read Next? (which we lost a year ago due to a 5%
budget cut) will be added.
3. 50 e-reference books (to be selected by the iCONN Database
Committee) will be added.
4. Access to the Biography Resource Center will be extended to all
academic libraries.
5. We will lose access to specific publications that EBSCO has
exclusive rights to: Consumer Reports and the Consumer Reports Buying
Guide; Scientific American; and Ranger Rick.
The Gale Bid also represents a substantial savings over the current
year, which will help keep iCONN costs within the proposed budget
without jeopardizing other existing databases.
The fact that so many of iCONN's resources will be available from a
single vendor should also simplify the administration of iCONN in your
library, including:
- vendor help desk support
- procedures for obtaining usage statistics
- online training resources
- coordination of in-district training for schools
- guidelines for browser support/configuration (change management)
- instructions for firewall and proxy server configuration (change
management)
- reporting IP address changes
In addition, now that so many of the resources will be available from a
single vendor, we are also exploring ways to take advantage of Gale's
federated search technology to improve iCONN's overall usability for
users.
We are indebted to the iCONN Database Committee for the significant
amount of time and expertise that they contributed to the bid process.
Thanks also to Steve Cauffman for compiling all the survey results from
Survey Monkey.
Regards,
Bill Sullivan

Message-ID: <5e70ff0a45bdfc418c9a2a99687af5de@192.168.0.195>
We have recently added a Russian language version of the On-the-Go parent-child activities. We hope you find these useful.
The development of these materials was supported in part by Grant H324M020084 from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs
Infant-Toddler language and early literacy activities: Free and Reproducible
Developed by Angela Notari-Syverson, Ph.D, and Judy Challoner, M.S.
Illustrations: Don Syverson
To download materials go to http://www.walearning.com and click on the purple button that says "Free Parent Education Handouts" on the home page. Then click on "On-The-Go." Move to the bottom of the page and you will see "Download Russian On-The-Go in PDF Format." Click that link and copy the file to your computer or print it out.
These materials include twenty home and community activities for adults and children birth to three that encourage early language and literacy development. They are appropriate for children with disabilities as well as children who are developing typically.
Each of the twenty activities includes an activity description, and hints for making the activity fun and developmentally appropriate. In addition to the activities, you can download an activity checklist that helps parents and caregivers notice their children's skills, and also cues adults to examine and grow their own interactions with children.
The materials are specifically designed to address the three key skills of 1) language development, 2) sounds and rhythms, and 3) general book and print awareness.
The files are in PDF format to allow easy and secure downloading.
· A brief introduction to the materials
· Activities and hints for adapting them to the child's specific needs
· Activity checklists for self-evaluation by the adult
The materials are made available by Angela Notari-Syverson and colleagues, and may be copied and distributed as long as they are not sold.

Message-ID: <63CF4BBFB213AC4A945DDE8ED2F00118B4B088FDEF@cm-oriole.quinnipiac.edu>
The New England Library Instruction Group (NELIG) is pleased to announce its annual program, which will be held Friday, June 5, 2009 at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine. The program, "Tapping into Learning Environments of the Future," will examine various emerging aspects of the learning environment and how they affect information literacy instruction.
This year's program features a keynote presentation by Donald P. Buckley, PhD, Professor of Biology and Director of Learning Technology for the School of Health Sciences at Quinnipiac University. Professor Buckley will speak on information fluency and the educational role of technology. The Decade of the Brain* challenged him to rethink how he taught and how one might use technology in one's teaching. His work coupling the use of technology to facilitate the learning of inquiry and to promote learning with understanding has won him four international awards and is now archived in the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American History as part of our national archive of the international transition to the Information Age.
Registration opens Thursday, April 23, 2009. The registration fee is $35 for ACRL/NEC members, $40 for non-members, and $30 for students. Register early as seats are limited.
Program details are at http://www.acrlnec.org/sigs/nelig/2009/
The registration form is at http://www.acrlnec.org/sigs/nelig//2009/register.html
When you register, please indicate which of the concurrent afternoon panels you would like to attend so we can plan which rooms to schedule them in. If more than one concurrent panel interests you, bring a colleague along and share notes after the show.
In keeping with ALA's environmental initiative Cup by Cup for a Greener ALA we encourage you to bring your own mug. Also, check the NELIG wiki (http://nelig.pbwiki.com/Carpooling) for carpooling opportunities.
Lodging information can be found at http://www.acrlnec.org/sigs/nelig/2009/lodging.html
The New England Library Instruction Group (NELIG) is the instruction interest group of the New England Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL).

Stratford Library is considering offering a Senior Citizen library card. If your library currently offers this type of card, would you please respond? Also, what benefits are associated with this type of card, i.e. reduced fines or longer circ times. Thank you.

Message-ID: <49F1E85E.7C78.0033.0@cslib.org>
Thanks go out to Steve Rice at the Connecticut State Library for a new
Google map that identifies the location of all the public libraries in
Connecticut. This ?CT public library atlas? shows not only the
library?s location in Google Maps, it also provides the library
address, phone number, and web site address. This information is more
accurate and current than you will find on any auto-generated Google
library map because the content comes from current State Library data.
As with other Google maps, you can use Street View to see what most
libraries look like. And you can use ?Get Directions? to find out
how to get there from here.
Go to http://tinyurl.com/d4dzbo to find the Public Libraries in
Connecticut map. This is one resource you should bookmark or add to
your Google Maps.

Subject: donating books is difficult it seems
Hi,
I wonder if you could forward my email on to someone who could help me find
a solution to the following problem. I have some Chinese language learning
materials, Chinese-English and English-Chinese dictionaries (as well as
Chinese only), and Chinese children's books (mostly in the form of annotated
editions of classic fiction, poetry, and some non-fiction -- which is quite
popular in Taiwan and China where I bought the books), and a small number of
books for adults. I want to donate them to a public library or an academic
library that allows the public to borrow for free (eg CCSU, not UConn), some
place that is willing to shelve them for at least a few years. Uconn doesn't
even want Chinese books (!), and even large public libraries are reticent to
accept them (though Russell in Middletown may take them). In a state of 3
million people there should be a need for this sort of thing, but I have
been dumbfounded by the total disinterest of the libraries I contact.
Thanks!
Greg

It's possible that some libraries are reluctant to accept a donation of
Chinese language materials because they do not have anyone on staff who is
able to catalog these items.
If any libraries are in this situation, please note that The Donohue Group,
Inc. (DGI) has an experienced cataloger on staff who is a native speaker of
Chinese, and we'd be happy to discuss our services. We provide foreign
language cataloging services to several libraries in the New England area,
and we have staff proficient in many languages including Chinese, Japanese,
Russian, Polish, Ukrainian and Swahili, as well as most major European
languages.
DGI will be exhibiting at the CLA conference this week in New Haven, and we
encourage all of you to stop by our table and learn more about our services
to the library community.

May 1
Message-ID: <63bda9180904271637o55c7f67du2f27972b8387b7cd@mail.gmail.com>
For those of you who are still perusing the CLA Conference schedule, I
invite you to a dynamic session by *Dr. Barry Nalebuff* of Yale University
called *Whispering Why Not? Problem Solving with a Higher Purpose* in Omni
Room George B on *Friday, May 1st at 11:00 am.* Dr. Nalebuff is an engaging
speaker and this is definitely a conference session not to be missed! Think
about the issues and problems that affect your library and come away from
this talk with a fresh outlook on finding creative solutions to the things
that are weighing your institution down.
*Many people think creativity is a black box. We take the contrary view -
creativity can be taught. Improved creativity can help lead to becoming a
more effective manager, parent, librarian, or citizen. Whispering Why
Not?illustrates the process of problem solving and the implementation
of the
idea in real time. This is problem solving with a higher purpose: to teach
creativity and improve the world. Dr. Barry Nalebuff, Yale professor and
co-author of* Why Not?: How to Use Everyday Ingenuity to Solve Problems Big
And Small *presents problem solving tools and shows how use them by example.
Why not, indeed. Dr. Nalebuff is an expert on game theory, a frequent
contributor to Forbes Magazine, the co-author of four books, the co-founder
of Honest Tea, and is currently the Milton Steinbach Professor of Economics
and Management at the Yale School of Management.*
This event is sponsored by the CLA Career Recruitment & Mentorship
Committee. We look forward to seeing you at *Whispering Why Not?*!

Subject: [Conntech] May is Safe Kids Month @ Our CT Libraries
Message-ID:
Safe Kids Connecticut is sending posters and bookmarks our way (focusing on bikd, skateboard and skate shoe safety), and they hope we will distribute the following message to our communities for May:
Summer is known as the "trauma season" - a time of year when more kids are injured than any other. While injury remains the number one killer of children under age 15, Safe Kids is committed to getting information to parents and caregivers to decrease this risk of death and injury. This year, we are focusing on Wheel Safety - keeping kids safe on their bikes, on skateboards and when using skate shoes (aka, Heelys). By doing a few simple things, such as always wearing a properly-fitted helmet, checking the equipment and only riding where it safe, kids can be safe this summer (and the rest of the year too!)

Merrill to host meeting on state budget
By CAITLIN M. DINEEN
Chronicle Staff Writer
MANSFIELD * State Rep. Denise Merrill, D-Mansfield, will be joined by
other area Democrat state representatives Tuesday night as she hosts a
forum regarding the proposed state budget.
Specifically, state Rep. Susan Johnson, D- Windham, state Rep. Bryan
Hurlburt, D- Tolland, and state Rep. Joan Lewis, D-Coventry, are
expected to attend. The event is in the Audrey P. Beck Municipal
Building at 4 South Eagleville Road from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
It is free and open to the public. Local and area elected officials have
been invited to attend the forum.
Discussion at the forum will focus on comparing the proposed Democratic
budget, the governor's proposed budget and the Republican proposed
budget.
The proposed Democratic budget was a $38.2 billion two-year budget
package with $ 3 billion in tax increases, various cuts to state
agencies and borrowing $500 mil-lion to close the 2009 deficit.
The Republican budget includes consolidating the state departments of
Public Health, Children and Families, Developmental Services, Mental
Health and Addiction Services and Social Services into a single
Department of Human Services. Their budget also calls for more than $
660 million in concessions from state employee unions.
Both budgets will be compared to Gov. M. Jodi Rell's budget. She
proposed a two-year $38.4 billion budget that would cut hundreds of
state employees, raise the price of numerous state fees and consolidate
or eliminate 23 state agencies.
Additional reporting from The Day and the Connecticut Post is included
in this story.

We have 10 new audiocassette albums free to The first library that
expresses interest. They are black, 15-capacity, full sleeve. The
cassettes fit into numbered slots. The cases look like the one in this
Demco link except that they are black instead of white:

If you're interested, please send me your contact info and C-Car number
and I'll send them. Thanks -
Lauren

Subject: [Conntech] Museum Pass Circulation Policies
Message-ID: <4ae8e140904300921n227956c6j392b118525db8f82@mail.gmail.com>
We are reviewing our museum pass circulation policies. Right now, we loan
them for three days. We don't allow holds, except for a one hour
"courtesy hold"
1. How long is the loan period?
2. Are system holds allowed?
3. What is the overdue fine?
Any other insights?
I apologize if this topic has been recently discussed but I could not find
it on the archives.
