The CT Library Support Staff (CLASS) section of the CT Library Association has recently lost several very active members to retirements and other reasons. We need more people to get involved with our group, to help plan professional development, training, and networking opportunities for support staff across the state of CT. In the past we have run ½ day workshops, full day conferences, salary surveys, and more to assist paraprofessionals with their professional growth. Our last CLASS meeting on July 16 was very successful, with a number of new faces to help out. We hope all these new people will come to our next meeting; there is also still an opportunity for more people to get involved. If you missed our July 16 meeting, please join us on Aug. 13 for our next brain-storming / planning session. We will be focusing on a fall workshop, as well as making plans for participation in the CLA annual conference in April. Our next meeting is open to anyone willing to attend and offer their ideas for what CLASS can do in the coming year. You do not need to be a CLASS or CLA member to attend; the meeting is FREE! We need people from all types of libraries: public, school, academic, and special. We are especially looking for input from public library workers. This grant project is being done in collaboration with Conservation ConneCTion, Connecticut?s response to the IMLS Connecting to Collections grant initiative. According to Project Director, State Archivist Mark Jones, ?This grant program will strengthen archives and historical records programs in Connecticut by increasing the knowledge of archival preservation principles and techniques in our museums and historical societies.? Each institution will work with a professional archivist, knowledgeable in conducting on-site assessments, who will conduct a one day or half day (depending on the size of the collection) survey of their archival collection. After the assessment the institution will receive a written report outlining the assessors findings and recommendations. This survey will collect data critical to the care of collections including environment, conservation, storage, training, and management. Once gathered, the Connecticut State Historical Records Advisory Board, the Connecticut State Library and Conservation ConneCTion will use the information to develop an appropriate response to assist institutions in improving how they care for their archival collections. In order to be considered for the Archival Assessment Program, prospective institutions must be a Connecticut museum, historical society or library with a local history collection and not had an assessment of its archival collection in the past five years. They must complete the ?Connecting to Collections? on-line survey form at the Conservation ConneCTion website at http://conservationct.org/ and they must complete and submit the Archival Assessment Program Questionnaire, also on the Conservation ConneCTion website. Institutions that are selected to participate in this project must provide the assessor with copies of guidelines, collection policies, building plans (if any) and other relevant documents prior to the onsite visit. They must also make their archival collections and their staff members accessible to the assessor, hold a brief orientation with the assessor on the day of the site visit, and arrange for at least one member of the board of directors to be present to confer with the assessor. On-line applications will be accepted until September 30, 2009. Selected institutions will be notified by mail in October. Assessments will be arranged between November 2009 and May 2010. For further information or questions please contact Mark Jones, State Archivist, phone: 860.757.6511, email: mjones@cslib.org or Kathy Craughwell-Varda, Conservation ConneCTion, phone: 203-740-8227, email: conservation-connection@cslib.org. This is the first book devoted to the fundamentally more interesting question: if those claims are so unfounded and erroneous, why have they resonated so strongly with millions of intelligent readers and filmgoers? This book not only explores the reasons for the appeal of the claims found in The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, it also provides a context for understanding the third of Dan Brown's "Robert Langdon" novels, The Lost Symbol, due out on September 15. About the author: Eric Plumer holds degrees in theology from Oxford University (B.A., M.A.) and the University of Notre Dame (Ph.D.), and has taught at both Oxford and Notre Dame. He currently teaches at the University of Scranton. This is his second book. Contents: Introduction A Special Note on Angels and Demons Chapter 1: People and Events in the History of Anti-Catholicism Chapter 2: The Controversy in the Catholic Church over Contraception Chapter 3: The Catholic Church and the Sex Abuse Scandals Chapter 4: The Controversy in the Catholic Church over Homosexuality Chapter 5: Opus Dei and Conspiracy Chapter 6: Classic Voices in American Religion: Thomas Jefferson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and William James Chapter 7: The Rise of Modern Science as a Challenge to the Catholic Church Chapter 8: The Rise of Modern Psychology as a Challenge to the Catholic Church Chapter 9: Mary Magdalene, the Place of Women in the Catholic Church, and the Sexuality of Jesus Chapter 10: The Quest for the Historical Jesus Epilogue From the back cover of the book: "The Catholic Church and American Culture: Why the Claims of Dan Brown Strike a Chord is an intellectually stimulating, thoroughly enjoyable read which addresses and elucidates momentous issues. Plumer employs accessible prose to present his engaging narration. His text is chock-full of fascinating and interesting stories which complement his well-researched, solid historical context. This book will be a hit with what is sometimes called "the educated popular audience" as well as with college students. It could be used as a class text that delineates the faith and morals battles that have been waged in the American Catholic Church for more than 100 years. Wherever it is read, it will generate discussion and discourse." Anonymous reviewer for the University of Scranton Press "Plumer asks the right question: why did The Da Vinci Code stir such a passionate response, if it was bad fiction and worse history? He also points to the right answer: The Da Vinci Code tapped into a deep cultural reservoir of anti-Catholic sentiment. His book brilliantly and with great clarity identifies forms of American anti-Catholicism as well as the ways the church's behavior frequently justified such hostility. This is an engaging, intellectually honest, and challenging consideration of the cultural context for a media phenomenon." Luke Timothy Johnson, R.W. Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins, Candler School of Theology, Emory University "This insightful and readable book shows that the widespread fascination with The Da Vinci Code comes from disappointment with the institutional churches and hunger for a spirituality congenial with contemporary values. All those who read The Da Vinci Code with joy or with repulsion or who didn't read it, but wondered at its popularity, will find this book illuminating." The Democrats' plan appears to be the same plan that we have seen in the recent pass. The Democrats are not proposing any new cuts to State Library Budget programs. AS NOTED BELOW, WE MUST CONTINUE TO THANK THE DEMOCRAT LAWMAKERS FOR FIGHTING FOR US!!! Governor Rell's new plan adds some new revenue-generation (tax) items and adds some new cuts. But the Governor's new proposal doesn't say anything one way or the other about library programs. I am told by my contacts in the Governor's Office that this means, unfortunately, that the Governor's prior proposed cuts are all "still on the table" for the continued budget negotiations between the Democrats, the Governor and the Republicans. I have a funny feeling that the key budget negotiators will soon reach a compromise on the FY10-11 biennial budget. I get this funny feeling from the fact that the Democrats seem willing to make more cuts (e.g., to close down the DMV which is a new proposal from the Democrats) and on the other hand, Governor Rell is willing to raise some taxes. I think that all parties will start quickly moving to the middle towards a compromise. All that being said, I know that we have sent hundreds and hundreds of emails up to Hartford, but we can't stop. By the way, I heard last week at the Capitol that the DEMOCRATS' feelings are getting hurt by the fact that they are fighting the good fight against draconian budget cuts, but the people from these programs aren't thanking the lawmakers for their efforts. I know that this "hurt feelings" commentary doesn't apply to the librarians, but we should take the commentary to heart and do our best to continue THANKING our friends in Hartford. The following DEMOCRAT lawmakers must be thanked again for continuing to resist any cuts to library programs: Denise Merrill, Christopher Donovan, Don Williams, Martin Looney, John Geragosian and Toni Harp. At the same time, we must continue to contact Governor Rell and Lt. Governor Fedele and ask/beg them to back off of the proposed library cuts that the Governor proposed back in May. THANKS FRIENDS!!! I'll keep the updates coming. Shea Dear Friends: I am writing as a follow-up to yesterday's note. I realized that I didn't send you the email addresses of the key budget negotiators. I know that many of you have been burning up your keyboards sending notes up to Hartford, and for this, I am grateful. I'm also thinking - because I think that we may be getting close to the end of the wire on budget negotiations - that we once again ask all of the library staff members and board members to also send email notes to the key lawmakers. I am also sending another round of handwritten notes to these folks myself. Even if you and your staff members and board members don't live or work in these lawmaker's districts, it's still ok to send them notes. Also, phone calls are a nice touch and are a different twist if you have already sent a bunch of emails to these folks. The More the Better !! THE FOLLOWING DEMOCRAT LAWMAKERS SHOULD RECEIVE "THANK YOU NOTES" FROM US FOR THEIR CONTINUED RESISTANCE TO ANY LIBRARY BUDGET CUTS: House Speaker Christopher Donovan: 860-240-8500; christopher.donovan@cga.ct.gov. House Majority Leader Denise Merrill: 860-240-8500; denise.merrill@cga.ct.gov. State Senate President Donald Williams: 860-240-8600; Williams@senatedems.ct.gov. Message-ID: <4A7C2FE7.1A3E.008E.0@cslib.org> The Middletown and Willimantic Library Service Centers are pleased to announce the availability of their new online catalog. We have completed the transition to an Insignia Software circulation system and OPAC. We very much appreciate everyone's patience as we migrated from one system to another. So, for those of you who are accustomed to using our catalog to check items you have on loan from the centers or to place reserves or renew items online you may now do all that in our new OPAC. I have included the instructions in the body of this e-mail as well as attaching a Word copy of the instructions. Your user ID is the same as it was in our iBistro catalog. Please do not use that catalog any more since it is inaccurate. Here are the new instructions: Middletown and Willimantic Service Center OPAC Instructions ü You will need Firefox 2.0 or higher or Internet Explorer 6 or higher ü Go to: www.insigniasoftware.com/connecticutopac ü Without logging in, you get the simple search page. For Advanced search click on the tab at the upper right ü You can log in to your account by clicking on the My Account tab at the upper left of the screen and then using your User ID number. This is the account number you already have with us. ü UserID is also your password. If it tells you that your password is unsecure when you log in you can ignore it (click OK) and then go on into your account. You could also change your password if you wish in the patron tab. ü In the My Account tab you can see what you have on loan, on reserve and your loan history. ü These lists are sortable by any of the fields in the list, i.e. call number, title, due date. Just click on the column heading you wish to sort by. ü You can also place reserves and view your loan history ü When you reserve an item, it will say ?Pick Up From? and then one of the centers. Just ignore that. We will send you your reserves in CCar as we always have. ü After you?ve visited the service center and want to print a list of items you have checked out on a given day go to the Loan tab and select the beginning date as the date of the checkout and the end date as the next day. For example if you checked things out on July 27 that would be the ?From? date and July 28 would be the ?To? date. The default dates there are From: the date a year ago and To: today?s date. You need to change both of them to print the list of the things you checked out on a given day. Click at the top of the column list to sort the list by whichever column you like and then print. For example if you want to sort by call number click on that heading. ü When you look at due dates or reserve dates in the catalog you will see that many of them are in the format: Day/Month/Year. We are working on getting this changed to Month/Day/Year. But not all of the dates have been fixed yet. ü We know that there are still some glitches in the catalog and we are working on them. Please be patient. Once again thanks for your understanding during our transition. I wanted to follow-up and share with everyone that Oliver Wolcott Library has decided to begin charging a fee for proctoring exams. We now charge $25 (which includes faxing but does not include mailing the exam). If you want to read our policy, you can visit our website www.owlibrary.org then select About OWL then Library Policies (or e-mail me and I'll send it you as an attachment). We felt it was reasonable and appropriate to charge for this service because the library is acting essentially as the university or learning center. The university is being paid, the student is paying the university, but somehow the Library is suppose to do this for free. We felt that it was appropriate when there are these third-party charges going on to charge a fee. This is in contrast to something like our computer workshops where we feel there is no third party involved- only the library assisting patrons with computer literacy. That was our reasoning. I am shocked that Governor Rell, up to this point a strong advocate for education and literacy, is not backing off her original position that cut these funds. Budget pressures make for difficult decisions, but cutting funding entirely or substantively for cooperative library programs will cost more in the long run and reverse regionalization that has worked efficiently and effectively for decades to provide service to those who need it most. You don't know how many canned letters of protest I get every day, and I usually don't possibly have time to respond to all of them. Our budget is fighting precisely for things like funding for libraries and cultural centers and medications for seniors and care for the mentally ill. I could go on. We need some (not a lot) extra revenue to maintain these important programs. I hope you will continue to support me and my fellow legislators who are fighting to keep this funding. It's hard; there's lots of pressure to just get a budget that would cut libraries and the CT Education Network. Thanks for caring enough to write. WHPL's staff has been busy getting the place ready, but we have learned that this event is for both Senior Centers & Libraries, so it will be on the west side (parking lot side) of the library/senior center complex, outside. If it rains, it will move indoors to the area of the Senior Center with the fireplace. Because this is a joint event, it is even more important to get as many library people as possible to attend, and to bring some of those good old homemade signs. Denise Merrill has always been a great friend of CLA and we must show our support for her work at the State Capitol, (and also that we can turn out as many people as the seniors!) In the meantime, our lobbyist, Bob Shea, advises that we ask board members, patrons, friends, colleagues and family members to contact Governor Rell (again) to ask for her support for our library programs. Please forward as appropriate. Everyone: The State Library is pleased to announce its statewide downloadable audio books service. The audio books collection is one service of iCONN, the State Library's re-search engine, and is made possible by a PEGPETIA grant from the Department of Public Utilities. The service includes over 1300 digital audio book titles from Ingram Digital Group, and is targeted to schools and public libraries, but is available to all. Anyone with Internet access is welcome to point to and search the service at http://connstatelib.myilibraryaudio.com/ but to place holds or check out titles requires a valid Connecticut public library card number. Titles can be downloaded to PC or Macs using the free plugin from Ingram Digital Group called the Ingram Media Manager. From your computer, you can then transfer titles to iPods and certain MP3 players for limited times. More details about how the service works are available from the Help link at the web site above. Soon we will add MARC records for the downloadable audio book titles to reQuest as well. The link to the service (above) will be included in iCONN's new landing page. Until that time, feel free to add the link to your library and school web pages as you see fit. Questions about the service are welcome and can be addressed to me by any of the means in the signature file below. Message-ID: <001501ca257f$60945a90$21bd0fb0$@org> August 25, 2009 Hi everyone, I know this has been happening to a lot of us around the state. I am hoping that my sharing of this photo will help us catch these thoughtless crooks! Back on June 10 of this year I had my wallet stolen out of my office as well. The East Haven P.D. are investigating the theft. These 2 women racked up $3800 worth of charges on my debit credit card which in turn wiped out my bank account. They did all of this on the same evening that they took my wallet. They went to stores all over North Haven and racked up these charges right away. My bank won't give me my Debit card back until after September 8. This has been a terrible inconvenience to me, but I was lucky enough to have my money in Liberty Bank and they were nice enough to credit me the amount stolen-pending an investigation. I am attaching photos of these two women. These were taken at Best Buy in North Haven. These two women were in every surveillance video at all the stores where my card was used. If you see these 2 women in your library call the police-they are wanted in multiple thefts at this point!! To those of us who have had our wallet's stolen- if it's any consolation-you're not alone- we'll get them! Deb Wender, a national expert from Northeast Document Conservation Center in Massachusetts, will be teaching participants how to care for their old scrapbooks so that they?ll survive for future generations. Scrapbooks present some of the most complex conservation and reformatting challenges. Composed on varying materials, adhered with problematic glues and tapes to often acidic pages, scrapbooks frequently need to be reformatted in order to preserve the intellectual information contained within. This workshop is free and open to the public as well as library and museum professionals interested in preservation options for scrapbooks. Participants are encouraged to bring a scrapbook from their collection for hands-on examination and discussion. Visitors will also be able to view the exhibition, The Keepers of History: Scrapbooks and Albums, which includes many scrapbooks featured in Jessica Helfand?s new book, Scrapbooks: An American History, on display next door at the Gunn Museum. Space is limited, call 860-868-7756 for additional information and to register. This exhibit and workshop are being sponsored by The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut, in collaboration with the Connecticut Humanities Council.   Deborah Wender has worked in the field of book conservation since 1979. Her varied education includes study at Centro del bel Libro in Switzerland, private and group study in the U.S., and production in a commercial bindery. She is a member of AIC, the Guild of Book Workers, ALA, and SAA.   This event is free and open to the public. (Library); Pat Holloway Subject: Go Libraries: 8/29/09 Status Report from the State Capitol Dear Library Friends: As we know, Governor Rell issued another general budget proposal the other day, in which Governor Rell proposes a progressive income tax on very high earners. The Governor also proposed the elimination of the inheritance tax; and an across-the-board decrease in the state sales tax from 6% to 5.5%. At the same time the Governor asked the Democrat Legislators to provide an additional $500 million in proposed cuts to state programs. It's my understanding the Democrat Legislators are generally supportive of the Governor's new proposal because they believe that the Governor is moving more towards the middle-ground with her new tax proposals. This weekend, the Democrats will be carefully analyzing the Governor's new Proposal; and it's my guess that the Democrats will be tweaking the Governor's proposal to obtain more tax revenues and to provide fewer cuts. One thing is certain, both sides now seem inclined to come up with a budget agreement that can be enacted by the Legislature and signed by the Governor prior to Tuesday night, September 1, 2009 at Midnight. It does concern me that the Governor is asking the Democrats to provide more cuts as part of the final budget deal. Therefore, during the next 48 hours, I think that we should again fire-up our email machines and get notes off to the key budget negotiators: . Governor Rell (governor.rell@ct.gov) and Lt Governor Fedele (LTGovernor.Fedele@ct.gov). We should again ask Governor Rell and LT Governor Fedele to withdraw their proposed cuts to iConn and InfoAnytime the Library Service Centers and other important library programs as part of their final budget negotiations. . House Speaker Christopher Donovan (Christopher.donovan@cga.ct.gov); House Majority Leader Denise Merrill (denise.merrill@cga.ct.gov); Senate President Don Williams (Williams@senatedems.ct.gov); Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney (looney@senatedems.ct.gov); House Appropriations Committee Chair John Geragosian (john.geragosian@cga.ct.gov); Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Toni Harp (Harp@senatedems.ct.gov); House Appropriations/Education Subcommittee Chair Andrew Fleischmann (andrew.fleischmann@cga.ct.gov); and Senate Appropriations/Education Subcommittee Chair Andrew Maynard (maynard@senatedems.ct.gov). We should profusely thank all of these Democrat Lawmakers for fighting in the trenches for libraries; and respectfully ask them to continue fighting until the final agreement is reached!! So far, the Librarians have done a great job fighting for our programs and our patrons. But we must let the key budget negotiators know that we never give up and that we fight right to the bitter end. Please try to send out your emails this weekend or very early Monday morning.
