Everyone: Usage statistics for iCONN's downloadable audio books during the month of November are now available at http://www.iconn.org/Statistics.aspx as an Excel spreadsheet. Also on the same web page is a link to a spreadsheet with our revised October usage statistics. One of you pointed out that our usage statistics included all titles checked out during the time reported, regardless of checkout date. This meant that titles whose checkout period overlapped a reporting date could be counted as checked out more than once. Effective November 1, our audio book vendor has changed iCONN's reporting to count checkout dates only. Statistics above for November and October now reflect the new counting method. The November spreadsheet also includes checkouts per user bar code prefix; you can find those in the spreadsheet tab called PatronCircStats. I am happy to answer any questions about this. In the 20 years that reQuest has been a service, the annual fee for basic participation has remained at $300 per year. Due to the current budget situation and the need to increase revenue, we are instituting both a slight increase in the annual fee as well as an economic incentive for multi-branch/district institutions. Beginning July 1, 2010: - The cost per standalone library will increase slightly from $300 to $325 per year. - A multi-branch/district incentive will enable the first library in a district to participate for $325 per year and all other libraries in that district to participate for $150 per year. This incentive is for schools in a district, multi-branch public libraries, as well as academic and special libraries with secondary campuses. Please plan your budgets accordingly. reQuest renewal notices will go out in May. New libraries wishing to participate in reQuest can visit the "Joining reQuest" page at: http://www.iconn.org/staff/JoiningReQuest.aspx . The participation agreement and forms located there will be updated shortly to reflect the new pricing schedule. Due to budget constraints, the State Library will NOT be printing and distributing the 2009 Profile. The electronic versions available for download on the website above are in PDF and Excel formats. Both may be printed. The full PDF version is 187 pages. 3. Among the changes this year is a separate section on Circulation statistics. 4. Based on check-in dates, etc., we are pretty sure it happened the first week of December. The thief removes the DVDs and leaves the cases. The person doesn't seem to be aware of contents--if the movie has more than one DVD, s/he only takes the first one. All DVDs are relatively recent, except for certain series--Harry Potter and Star Wars. I know there are websites that sell used DVDs--and post lists of titles they want--so perhaps someone shops the library and re-sells the stolen items. As was the case with the first round of thefts, we have filed a report with the Granby Police Department with intent to prosecute if the thief is found. In the meantime, we will be moving our collection to an area with better staff supervision. I would be interested to know if other libraries have had a similar problem. And...Good luck to all of you! He (we know who it was) took the DVDs and left the cases on a shelf in the children's area. We lost a lot of DVDs to this kid, who was eventually brought in by his dad, stack of DVDs in hand. Before we found out who our thief was, we decided to store all of our new DVDs at the circ desk. They're filed in drawers (Demco WF12119540) in paper sleeves, with a number on the sleeve and the inside of the case. After six months, when they're no longer considered new, they go back in the cases and out on the shelves. It's a nuisance, but manageable with our relatively small collection. Because I ordered the storage drawers before we knew how many we'd need, we have three extra we'd be happy to sell for $40 each. They list for $45.99 at Demco. Anita R. We probably had the same young man as Anita had in Brookfield a few years ago, and we have recently had a woman (we know because she left the cases in the women's bathroom). There was no rhyme or reason to her selections - new, old, it didn't seem to matter to her. She had a pattern of timing, though, and we kept a very vigilant eye out during those times, making sure that staff was busy doing something in the area (which is within sight of the Circ desk, but not right next to it). Knock on wood, she seems to have left, but it is interesting to know that everyone is experiencing this. We did keep all the dvds behind the desk a few years ago, but we now own too many and our patrons hated the amount of time it took to match them up, to say nothing of the amount of staff time it took. We hadn't thought of filing a report with the police, either, because we thought we had to have an idea of who the perpetrator is, so I am very grateful to know that isn't true! I thought of putting up a sign asking for patron watchfulness as some of you did, but I was afraid it might let others know how easy it is to steal them. We are all caught between a rock and a hard place: no money, no space and patrons who LOVE the dvds. Canton Public Library has been the target of one or more DVD thieves for several months now.  We have lost 7 more discs (they kindly leave us the cases) just in the last week, and before that a towering stack going back to September.  We find many empty cases on shelves all over the library.  Other times, patrons will bring us the empty cases right over from the DVD shelves, which are very close (but apparently not close enough) to the circulation desk.  The thefts are of of new and old titles alike. I discussed this matter with my Board a few months ago and they suggested we keep all the DVDs behind the circ desk or else in the staff office, but this is not a realistic solution.  No space or not piece of furniture to store them in.  I might follow up on Anita Barney's idea, however. I told some of my staff that I feel like posting a sign at the DVD collection reading Please don't steal our DVDS!  They were bought for the enjoyment of the entire community.  I haven't done this, however, because it sounds so childlike, but I am at a loss as to how to stop this.  Again, maybe Anita Barney has provided a solution. How frustrating!  I didn't think of filing a police report.  Thanks for the idea. RobGranby Public Library has had its second round of DVD thefts. Based on check-in dates, etc., we are pretty sure it happened the first week of December. The thief removes the DVDs and leaves the cases. The person doesn't seem to be aware of contents--if the movie has more than one DVD, s/he only takes the first one. All DVDs are relatively recent, except for certain series--Harry Potter and Star Wars.I know there are websites that sell used DVDs--and post lists of titles they want--so perhaps someone shops the library and re-sells the stolen items. As was the case with the first round of thefts, we have filed a report with the Granby Police Department with intent to prosecute if the thief is found. In the meantime, we will be moving our collection to an area with better staff supervision. I would be interested to know if other libraries have had a similar problem.And...Good luck to all of you! One of those features is professional reviews in Library Journal, Booklist, Publishers Weekly, Choice, and School Library Journal (for the complete list of features to be discontinued, see http://www.iconn.org/Forthcoming.aspx). However, content from Library Journal, Booklist, Publishers Weekly, Choice, and School Library Journal is all available to us as a part of iCONN's license with Cengage Gale, specifically in Educator's Reference Complete (ERC). ERC is available as a link on all of iCONN's classic menus (see http://www.iconn.org/staff/classicmenulinks.aspx). You can get to the classic menu by using the Search Individual Resources link on iCONN's start page. Each individual review journal can be found by searching the Online Magazines /E-Journal Finder resource. Using ERC to replace the reviews now in reQuest would mean choosing Advanced Search, then limiting results By Document Type. In that field I found the following review limiters: Book review Children?s review Circus review Comedy review Dance review E-book review Hotel review Movie review Nightclub review Opera review Radio program review Reviews Skating review Theater review Video recording review Young adult review I am grateful to Carol Kubala for reminding us at iCONN of this use of the ERC. The Connecticut State Library and Library Connection Inc. recently established a digitization services model designed both to build a Treasures of Connecticut Libraries online collection and to support growth of the Connecticut History Online (CHO) collection. The workshop will provide a first look at a process designed to become a statewide model, one in which Connecticut libraries, historical societies and museums would receive financial and technical support in digitizing their image collections and in sharing their materials via the Treasures of Connecticut Libraries and Connecticut History Online digital collections. CHO will also be the source of images for the Encyclopedia of Connecticut History Online (ECHO), a major digital encyclopedia initiative of the Connecticut Humanities Councilscheduled to launch in the spring of 2012. At the workshop, those attending will have a chance to see the "beta" project for the collaboration -- in which images from the Hartford Times Collection, held in the Hartford History Center of the Hartford Public Library, were selected for digitization and preservation for the library's own uses and for inclusion in both Treasures and CHO, and which will later dovetail with stories planned for the online encyclopedia. Brenda Miller of the Hartford History Center, Kathy Foulke of Connecticut History Online, Ann Weaver of Library Connection Inc., Gail Hurley of the Connecticut State Library and Anne Farrow of ECHO will each present information on their parts of this collaboration, one designed to protect, digitize and then bring to a wide audience the valuable local images residing in collections throughout the state. Connecticut's public and academic libraries are joining forces on February 18, 2010 for the first-ever "Snapshot: One Day in the Life of Connecticut Libraries." We'll be collecting information to capture the impact Connecticut libraries have on their communities on a typical day. This project started in New Jersey and, like them, we'll use the results to spread the word about the important roles libraries play in the lives of our residents. NJ was able to document over 160,000 visitors to their libraries on a typical day - can we top that record? Only with your help! Join the effort today at http://snapshotctlib.wordpress.com/join-us/ Participation is easy. You'll need to send us some statistics (probably things you already count) and pictures (if you take them). Everything you'll need is in the "Toolkit for Libraries" including the survey and patron comment forms. Please join us and participate at a level that works for you. ___________________________ Betty Anne Reiter Director Groton Public Library 52 Newtown Road Groton, CT 06340 860.441.6750 breiter@town.groton.ct.us -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... HeritageQuest Online is a unique resource for both genealogical and historical researchers. In each session, we will cover the modules: U.S. Census, Books, PERSI, Freedman's Bank, Revolutionary War, and Serial Set and explore finding and manipulating results. In addition we will learn how to best print images using Adobe Acrobat and how to maximize the utility of the notebook feature. We will also work with the Census Book help, maps and census forms. Participants will take away experience with genealogical research and supporting handouts to help refresh their memory after the session. U.S. Federal Census, 1790-1930: The page images for the entire census, 1790-1930, are included in HeritageQuest Online. Many corresponding name indexes are also available. These are completely new indexes created by ProQuest. In addition to the ability to search by name, our census records can be searched by place of birth, age, ethnicity and other variables making this the most versatile census searching available online. Researchers can quickly see all African-Americans or all persons born in Ireland living in a state or county. PERSI - The PERiodical Source Index: A comprehensive subject index covering more than 6,600 genealogy and local history periodicals written in English and French (Canada) since 1800. PERSI provides the researcher the ability to search on surnames, locations, and methodologies as well as the ability to browse the journals by title and keyword. There are more than 2.1 million article citations currently available, with updates occurring annually. Freedman's Bank Records: At the close of the Civil War, the Freedman's Savings & Trust Company was the primary bank for America's freed slaves and others from 1865-1874. This HeritageQuest collection documents more than 105,000 bank depositors and over 480,000 of their dependants and heirs. It is considered one of the most important resources for African-American genealogical research. Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files: This collection details records of 80,000+ individuals who served in the Revolutionary War and contains both genealogical and historical information. Each veteran's file contains six or more pages on each veteran and normally includes the veteran's former rank, unit, and period of service, age or date of birth, residence, and sometimes-genealogical information on other family members. U.S. Serial Set: This collection offers a glimpse into the people and places on whose behalf Congressional action was sought during the period 1789-1969. Consisting of documents and reports prepared for the U.S. Congress, it includes Private Relief Actions, Memorials, and Petitions. The subject matter covered by this collection includes: pensions, military and naval matters, claims of election fraud, public works projects, immigration and naturalization, land grants, taxation, and many types of monetary claims made by individuals and businesses. Registration: Access the ProQuest Web Page at https://proquestmeetings.webex.com/proquestmeetings/onstage/g.php?d=712315502 and follow the Register link for this session. As part of Project Compass, a grant-funded initiative by WebJunction and the State Library of North Carolina, research has been conducted to assess the type and extent of current patron needs from libraries and the response to those needs by state and local public libraries. Join us for an overview of this initial research, and to be introduced to the project and to a new section on WebJunction for Workforce Resources designed to collect library-specific resources and responses to these tough times. You'll hear about strategies for triaging social services and how to analyze your library's services in relation to existing community social services. You'll discover new ways to create partnerships with community agencies to leverage workforce development efforts. More information, including the proposal, can be found at: http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=4138 You can go to the Legislative Action Center to access your representatives directly http://capwiz.com/ala/home/ These are the talking points: Libraries and librarians are at the forefront of helping the unemployed obtain needed job skills and look for work. Since libraries are the only source of no-fee Internet access for 71 percent of Americans, libraries are becoming the center of job searches for the unemployed. Since many job applications are now submitted online, a lack of Internet access could mean a lack of opportunity to apply for jobs. Unfortunately, these services are being threatened as librarians are losing their jobs due to state and local budget shortfalls. Without staff, libraries are often forced to reduce hours or even close, which limits the ability of the unemployed to access resources at the times they need it most. Please include $650 million for libraries that the American Library Association has proposed in the Jobs for Main Street Act. The additional funds would enable libraries to restore jobs and hire new staff, which would lead to increased hours and resources for the public. The public would then be able to use the free Internet access to look for jobs, take advantage of library classes to develop job skills, use the small business resources to build business plans, and much more. In order to be eligible to submit an LSTA application (due March 5), a library must send at least one attendee to one of the scheduled LSTA grant application sessions. Though not required, I heartily advise applicants to attend a session on outcome based evaluation as well. Here's the information from their homepage: Come see the Kindle DX at the Reference Desk. It?s loaded with news from around the nation and the world: The New York Times, The Time (London), The Irish Times, The Washington Post, and more. All you need is your driver's license to check it out for in-library use. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Wilton Library also has a Kindle. Here is what they say on their homepage: What is a Kindle? It?s a wireless reading device with an electronic-paper display that provides a sharp, high resolution screen; it looks and reads like real paper. It is simple to use, has no cables and requires no syncing. There are more than 200,000 titles available for the Kindle and it holds over 200 titles at any one time! And, at 10.3 ounces it is great for traveling. It is often hard to commit to a major purchase without trying it out so Wilton Library is giving you the opportunity to try the Kindle. Visit the Reference Desk to check it out or contact Mary Anne Franco at 762-3950, Ext. 210 if you have any questions. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ And from Darien: The Darien Library invites you to stop in and take a look at our Kindle. Innovative tools and easy personalization ensure learners have the support they need anywhere, anytime. For many students, writing can often be a challenging experience. It is a complex task that requires students to combine both the process of composing text, including organizing ideas and making effective word choices, with the mechanics of writing, such as spelling, punctuation, and grammar. This session will demonstrate how WriteOnline offers a powerful solution to this challenge by supporting all learners, and particularly struggling writers. Participants will discover that WriteOnline is more than just an online word processor. It is specifically designed for education and has built-in tools for writing support. Students can use its integrated speech, word prediction, word banks, and writing frames to help them write. It is incredibly easy to personalize, so individuals can have just the right support they need. Participants will learn how students can save their documents online or submit their documents directly to teachers for commenting. Teachers reviewing students' documents benefit from WriteOnline's analytic tools that track spelling corrections and pasted text. This session will also highlight the benefits of an online word processor - from easy administration and automatic updates to the convenience of anywhere, anytime access - and discover how WriteOnline can be used offline as well! All of WriteOnline's innovative features combine to create a powerful, educational writing tool designed to support writers of all ages and abilities.
