To register access the Continuing Education Calendar of Events at: http://tinyurl.com/CSLCalendar HeritageQuest Online Database Training for Genealogists On January 20th and 21st, Beth Reiten, Senior Training Specialist for ProQuest will conduct half day training sessions for HeritageQuest Online. HeritageQuest Online is a unique resource for both genealogical and historical researchers. In each session, we will cover the modules: U.S. Census, Books, PERSI, Freedman's Bank, Revolutionary War, and Serial Set and explore finding and manipulating results. In addition we will learn how to best print images using Adobe Acrobat and how to maximize the utility of the notebook feature. We will also work with the Census Book help, maps and census forms. Participants will take away experience with genealogical research and supporting handouts to help refresh their memory after the session. U.S. Federal Census, 1790-1930: The page images for the entire census, 1790-1930, are included in HeritageQuest Online. Many corresponding name indexes are also available. These are completely new indexes created by ProQuest. In addition to the ability to search by name, our census records can be searched by place of birth, age, ethnicity and other variables making this the most versatile census searching available online. Researchers can quickly see all African-Americans or all persons born in Ireland living in a state or county. PERSI? - The PERiodical Source Index: A comprehensive subject index covering more than 6,600 genealogy and local history periodicals written in English and French (Canada) since 1800. PERSI? provides the researcher the ability to search on surnames, locations, and methodologies as well as the ability to browse the journals by title and keyword. There are more than 2.1 million article citations currently available, with updates occurring annually. Freedman's Bank Records: At the close of the Civil War, the Freedman's Savings & Trust Company was the primary bank for America's freed slaves and others from 1865-1874. This HeritageQuest collection documents more than 105,000 bank depositors and over 480,000 of their dependants and heirs. It is considered one of the most important resources for African-American genealogical research. Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files: This collection details records of 80,000+ individuals who served in the Revolutionary War and contains both genealogical and historical information. Each veteran's file contains six or more pages on each veteran and normally includes the veteran's former rank, unit, and period of service, age or date of birth, residence, and sometimes-genealogical information on other family members. U.S. Serial Set: This collection offers a glimpseinto the people and places on whose behalf Congressional action was sought during the period 1789-1969. Consisting of documents and reports prepared for the U.S. Congress, it includes Private Relief Actions, Memorials, and Petitions. The subject matter covered by this collection includes: pensions, military and naval matters, claims of election fraud, public works projects, immigration and naturalization, land grants, taxation, and many types of monetary claims made by individuals and businesses. On the positive side management will know exactly when workers arrive, leave, eat, and take breaks.  And no more timesheets. This is simply a statement of opinion and experience, I am neither a supervisor nor an administrator.William Armstrong New Haven Free Public Library 133 Elm St. New Haven, CT 06510 (203) 946-8130 ext. 381 -----Original Message----- From: "Ann Davis" Sent 1/7/2009 3:44:57 PM To: conntech@mylist.net Subject: [Conntech] Punch Time ClocksGood Afternoon, I am contemplating purchasing a punch time clock to record staff work hours at our library. In one location, we have a staff of six students who are largely unsupervised. In the other, the staff is larger (15) and it is difficult to keep track of who is coming and going (particularly when students swap shifts, show up late, stay late waiting for someone else to come in, etc.). Some of these students open and close the library with campus safety's assistance on days when professional library staff are not present. Others clock in before making rounds on campus checking classroom technology. We have found these time clocks to be invaluable. Not only does it keep more accurate records for our payroll, but it also reinforces those who have been responsible regarding their hours and have been frustrated about lack of accountability for those who are not as responsible. Several students have expressed this frustration (why come in on time if there is not consistent penalty for showing up late or not at all?) This was a different kind of morale issue all together and one that, I suspect, is not limited to part time employees. With the time clock, there is little room for question and we can address punctuality and attendance issues consistently and quickly. We can also acknowledge those who stay late when they know it's the responsible thing to do. As an added benefit, we don't have to spend time deciphering handwriting. As for make/model, we use the AcroPrint ES900. We upgraded to this after trying an older model purchased second-hand. The newer model automatically adjusts for the number of days in a month, leap year, and daylight savings time. It also has an internal battery to prevent resets during minor electrical outages. These features turned out to be very important (we no longer have the "time clock wasn't working" excuses). I hope this is helpful! HeritageQuest Online is a resource for both genealogical and historical researchers. In each session, we will cover : U.S. Message-ID: <1232131787_350@lucius> Hi, If you are free on Wednesday, March 4th you are invited to attend our first Sports Author talk/signing of 09' On Wednesday, March 4th @ 6:30pm at the Whittemore Library in Naugatuck, Christine Baker, author of: Why She Plays: The World of Women's Basketball will be doing a talk and signing.. Here's some info on Ms. Baker's book: ===== Why does she play basketball? Since the enactment of Title IX in 1972, that question has come to be asked of more girls and women-and answered in more ways-than ever before. Christine Baker, herself an avid player and an assistant coach, pursues an answer through the ranks of the sport from youth basketball to the WNBA. Baker sets the stage with a quick look at current statistics and trends in women's basketball nationwide, noting the profound changes in the last thirty-five years. A series of exclusive interviews then takes us into the heart and soul of the sport. Her subjects are players and coaches, from neophytes to stars such as Dawn Staley and Nancy Lieberman; from legendary coaches like Jody Conradt to the masterminds of USA Basketball and the 1996 Women's Dream Team; from Donna Lopiano, the former CEO of the Women's Sports Foundation, to tomorrow's Olympic athletes. A richly detailed, all-encompassing portrait of the sport, these interviews offer a wealth of insights into the game, American sports culture, and, indeed, why Baker plays. Ms. Baker was a three-sport athlete in high school and continued on to play Division III basketball at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York, where she was co-captain of the team for three years, team MVP 1991, 1993-1995, broke the single season scoring record (both men and women) with 538 points, still holds the single game scoring record (both men and women) with 38 points, broke the all-time leading scoring record with 1,523 points, was named to all ECAC first-team 1994-1995, All-Metro first-team 1994-1995, All Hudson Valley 1991-1995, and All WIAC 1991-1995, among other honors. Christine Baker is currently the director of Public Relations at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York (www.mercy.edu ). In addition to her work, she is an adjunct professor at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York. She is a contributing writer for Full Court Press Online covering the WNBA and women's sports. She also coaches basketball in her free time. I have spoken with Ms. Baker and she would love to do more appearances at local Connecticut Libraries.. We have arranged for her to be interviewed on Local radio Station WATR (1320am) on the last Saturday in February (28th) between 1pm and 3pm. Also an article in the Waterbury paper is planned as well.. In conjunction with the author's appearance the library will be holding a raffle of a signed mini-basketball from the Connecticut Sun. The autographs are from the current Sun players who have also played for Uconn. Money from the Raffle will benefit the Library's Rotunda Restoration Fund. If you'd like to know more about Ms. Baker or wish to contact her please email us at: johnw@biblio.org She has been great to work with.. Besides Ms. Baker the Whittemore Library has more sports authors in the planning stage for this Spring.. Books on the Red Sox, Yogi Berra and Connecticut Baseball are in the pipeline. Everyone is invited to attend!! John Wiehn Whittemore Library -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Some estimate each test to be as much as $300 per item. A public meeting was held January 22, and Cheryl Falvey, General Counsel for the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), stated that a decision should be made by the first week of February regarding libraries. She advised libraries not to take any action at this time, and we are hopeful that the Commission's decision will exempt libraries. Explain to the Commission that it is simply impossible for libraries to remove all children's books from the shelves and/or ban children under 12 from the library and still provide the level of service that is needed. As always, thank you for all that you do. The only way we will be successful in ensuring that children will have access to safe books is with a strong grassroots effort. Your comments to the CPSC need to be submitted as soon as possible, so please tell all your friends and family - we need as many people as possible to communicate that this oversight could have lasting ramifications on our children and our communities. * The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 has been interpreted to include books as a product that must be tested for lead. While it is understandable that the CPSC must protect children from toxic materials, publishers have already tested the book components and found that the lead levels are lower than the regulations require three years from now. Additionally, all book recalls in the last two decades have been because of toys attached to the books that posed a choking hazard, not the books themselves. * Making these testing regulations retroactive would require both school and public libraries to take drastic steps to come into compliance. They either would have to ban children from their libraries or pull every book intended for children under the age of 12 from their bookshelves at the time children are fostering a lifelong love of learning and reading. * In order to allow children and families to continue accessing critical library materials, please either exempt books from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, accept the component tests that have already been done, or exempt all books currently in school and public libraries. This is from ALA Direct: Consumer Product Safety Commission seal Feds: Anti-lead law not intended for library books Taken at face value, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's interpretation of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which lowers the permissible level of lead in children's products and imposes certification requirements, would require libraries to limit access to their children's collections or have them tested for lead content. However, ALA Washington Office Executive Director Emily Sheketoff told American Libraries, "We have spoken with congressional offices and they have said that it was not congressional intent to include books" in the law. I thought it'd be worth pointing out that Neil Gaiman just twittered a link to this email on the web in the hope that people would bombard the relevant phone numbers and email addresses with complaints and the like. Mr. Gaiman called it "idiot American attempts to make libraries leadsafe for kids," and the page he linked to published the email under the heading "Scary Library Shit." So, it looks like people (and some of them of relative note) outside the semi-insulated library universe are taking up the cause as well, which can only be a good thing. Here are the facts as we know them right now. Kendall Wiggin is chair of the ALA Committee on Legislation which met today with the ALA Washington Office. At this meeting ALA reported that the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act itself does not mention books or libraries. In the rule making process books have been added to the list of products covered. Although libraries are not mentioned, ALA believes that it would be better to have libraries specifically exempted so they have been asking librarians to call the Acting Director of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. While this is a matter of concern I don't think we need to panic. As Susan Cormier said in her posting last week to Goodnightmon: "This will surely be clarified, and frankly, I can't see Congress or the Consumer Product Safety Commission taking an action that would effectively close down the Children's Department of every public library and every elementary school library in the country." As soon as there is more information we'll let you know. If I had to remove all books published prior to 2000, for example, I'd be reduced to a few shelves. The irony -- lead is implicated in reducing cognitive abilities, but so is a lack of books and ideas. (2) I defend both posters -- Mr. M was identifying the actual title of the posting. Ms. S's post underscores that we should be respectful of others in our language in a public forum. But not only that, I can't access the sentiments that were linked by Mr. Gaiman because I'm in a filtered environment. I know it's mostly because the link pointed to a blog, but I wonder if the use of profanity makes it easier for filters to block opinions. So perhaps there is a new and ironic reason to refrain from profanity --- enhancing access and maintaining free speech....at least the important part of free speech. just a thought. The Moving Image LC Form/Genre Headings Best Practices Task Force formed by the Online Audio Visual Catalogers Cataloging and Policy Committee (OLAC CAPC) has been given the following charge "This task force will investigate and make recommendations for best practices in implementing Library of Congress genre/form (655) headings for moving image materials, including, but not limited to: * Developing fuller guidelines for use of LC genre/form headings for moving images, focusing on tricky situations * Providing more extensive examples of use of these headings * Making recommendations for potentially controversial situations or where options are provided for " We have already considered that we might cover appropriate form/genre coverage for live performances which cover the gamut from plays, musical performance, stand up and sketch comedy, performance art, reentactments, etc. We also hope to look at the fiction/non-fiction divide for moving images and how to appropriately bring this out. We may also discuss where form/genre treatment is appropriate and where aspects might be more appropriately brought out in other ways. We would like to tap the collective wisdom of the list to ask about tricky or controversial situations that you might have run into in the course of moving image cataloging. We might also consider headings currently missing in the moving image genre that people think might be helpful. We would like to gather these by February 20. More libraries than ever have a chance to participate as both longtime crowd favorites The High Strung and newcomers Donny Hue and the Colors will be touring separately. With more than 200 appearances at libraries in 48 states since 2005, the Rock & Roll Library Tour is a proven way to draw reluctant users into the library, often bringing crowds numbering in the hundreds to the most buzzed about event of the summer. Librarians note, “The guys were so engaging with the crowd. It was quite literally a traffic stopping performance” and the tour “took our summer programming to a completely new level.” Detroit-based The High Strung played the inaugural Rock & Roll Library Tour of Michigan in 2005 and has since delighted audiences around the country with catchy, energetic music. With a new album coming out on Park the Van Records in spring 2009, The High Strung will perform a mix of favorites and new tunes, as well as writing and performing a new song at each location with the help of the audience. Brooklyn-based Donny Hue and the Colors blends pop and folk to create whimsical tunes with an almost childlike twist. The band creates a memorable experience through a circus-like atmosphere, with audience members joining in on sleigh bells, kazoos, and other fun instruments. Donny Hue will also write and perform original songs with the crowd, leaving each library a personal souvenir of the tour stop. Both The High Strung and Donny Hue have received critical acclaim from publications such as Rolling Stone, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, and the Washington Post. Donny Hue’s latest release, “Tell Tall Tales,” has been called “simply a brilliant album,” while The High Strung’s tune, “The Luck You Got,” is currently featured in a national commercial for TGIFriday’s. Please forward as appropriate. I have just learned from Auto-Graphics (A-G) that Cengage Gale is having some technical issues right now. Until this issue is resolved you may encounter a zero or -1 search results count. As a courtesy, the default checkmark in the General OneFile has been removed temporarily. You can still search General OneFile and the other Gale databases by placing a checkmark in the appropriate box/es. If a Gale database then yields a zero or -1 search result count, just click on the number and you will still get results within Gale. Auto-Graphics is working very closely with Gale to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. I will write again when the situation has changed. Thanks to all for your patience.
