Everyone:
Recently a few of you have alerted me to the fact that AP Images is prompting for a username and password, even when authentication should be by IP address. My tech support contact at Accuweather reports that Accuweather is having an authentication issue with AP Images on a global scale. Teams at AP and Accuweather are working on this issue this morning. I expect an update on the process later today. When I receive it, I will forward the information to you all.
In the meantime, thank you all for your patience, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Free Webinar: Crouching Tigers, Reading Dragons: Creating a Reading
Challenge Program - July 7th (Online)
Join presenters from Seattle and British Colombia as they share their
experiences & expertise with the Global Reading Challenge/Reading Link
Challenge, a program that encourages team building, reading for
retention, and cooperation between school and public libraries. The
presenters will demonstrate how the program can fit into your
library?s programming, regardless of size or budget, and how it can
be done in one building, between public libraries and public schools,
or
across state or international borders. The program emphasizes books
that reflect a diversity of backgrounds, and encourages 4th and 5th
grade students of all reading abilities to engage in the "sport" of
reading. For additional details and registration information visit:

Free Webinar:Living Library Project: Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover -
July 22nd (ONLINE)
The Living Library is a unique event that brings together people who
have special interests, beliefs or experiences to speak with people from
different backgrounds and share their personal story. In this innovative
program participants can "check out" Living Books for a personal
conversation. Both the Bainbridge Island and Santa Monica Public
Libraries executed two successful Living Library events. The Bainbridge
Island event covered such diverse experiences as life as a quadriplegic,
a female police officer, a young gay man and an atheist. Santa Monica
Public Librarys Living Books included a fat activist, a formerly
homeless person, an ex-gangmember and a nudist. Join us for a free
webinar with leads from these projects: Rebecca Judd from the Bainbridge
Island (WA) branch of the Kitsap Regional Library System, and Julie
MacDonald and Rachel Foyt from the Santa Monica Public Library in Santa
Monica (CA). Hear how they planned and implemented the project in their
libraries, and find out how you can create a Living Library in your
community. For additional information see http://tinyurl.com/6l3vjd
Free Webinar: Bilingual Storytimes: Building Early Literacy & Community
- July 29th (ONLINE)
Libraries are expanding storytime programming to build early literacy
skills in their community. The Mission Branch of the San Francisco
Public Library recently added to their popular Bilingual Toddler Tales
Program (300-400 attendees!) hands-on literacy activity stations for
caregivers to explore. Seattle Public Library has expanded their Summer
Reading Program to include bilingual storytimes in Chinese, Vietnamese
and Spanish. Both libraries have had great success in their early
literacy programming and continue to build deep connections with
caregivers in their communities. Join Laura Tarango, children's
librarian at the Mission Branch, and Valerie Wonder, immigrant and
refugee programs manager at Seattle Public Library, during this free
webinar. You?ll hear how they assessed the community?s needs,
developed and adapted the programs; and they?ll provide practical
steps for you to apply to your outreach and programming efforts. For
additional information see http://tinyurl.com/6l3vjd

I understand from iCONN's Accuweather account representative that most Connecticut institutions now have access to AP Images once again. Accuweather continues to work with AP to restore access for those Connecticut institutions that do not yet have access, and they expect to have the problem solved by tonight.
If your institution is one of those that do not yet have access to AP Images, please reply to me with that information and I will issue you a temporary username and password for access until your account access is restored.

Message-ID:
(Please pass this message on to any library staff who may be interested but are not on Conntech - thank you!)
CLASS needs your help!
The CT Library Support Staff (CLASS) section of the CT Library Association has recently lost several very active members to retirements and other reasons. We need more people to get involved with our group, to help plan professional development, training, and networking opportunities for support staff across the state of CT. In the past we have run ½ day workshops, full day conferences, salary surveys, and more to assist paraprofessionals with their professional growth.
Our next meeting is open to anyone willing to attend and offer their ideas for what CLASS can do in the coming year. You do not need to be a CLASS or CLA member to attend; the meeting is FREE! We need people from all types of libraries: public, school, academic, and special. We are especially looking for input from public library workers.
CLASS meeting details:
Thursday July 16, 2009
2:00-3:30 pm
Middletown Library Service Center
(find address and directions at http://ct.webjunction.org/ct/mlsc )
Light refreshments will be served. If you plan to attend the CLASS meeting on July 16th , please RSVP to ColburnL@mail.ccsu.edu
For more information please contact CLASS chair Laurie Colburn at Central CT State University, ColburnL@mail.ccsu.edu or phone 860-832-2170.
Thanks - we look forward to seeing you on July 16!

Survey takers, unite!!
After a lengthy absence that has involved intense contract negotiations, possible misuse of survey-gathering funds, substantial editorial malfeasance, and a high profile lawsuit involving certain of the parties and the makers of those little packets of ketchup*, we're back with another fantastic survey of the Connecticut library community. If you already subscribe to the divisional blog at http://webjunctionworks.org/ct/blog/, you of course already know all this.
Click here for the survey: www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=SkV_2bJjFrB5tDYnTqoUskqg_3d_3d.
This week's questions involve budget cuts (naturally) and also wether you own or rent your home. Get your answers in before July 9, because that's the day your computer stops working** for good. More information on technical issues that at http://ct.webjunction.org/1.
For those curious about our methodology, note that our questions are scientifically formulated deep within the research laboratories here at the Division of Library Development. The resulting data is carefully collected into representative samples that are stratified and clustered and are then systematically, double blind taste-tested. In a vacuum environment. Using Boolean language!***
* = none of this is true.
** = again, not true.
*** = sadly, untrue.
In Anna Quindlen's words, here's one true thing: www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=SkV_2bJjFrB5tDYnTqoUskqg_3d_3d. That's the survey link. Two clicks and you're done. And may the force be with you...but I understand that on the Dark Side they have cookies.

You are all invited to the library for a special event with Elizabeth
Brundage, author of The Doctor's Wife and Somebody Else's Daughter! Join us
for a conversation with Brundage about her background , her books, and
writing process.
Refreshments will be served. This event is free and registration is not
required.
Amazon.com Review of The Doctor's Wife
A suspense novel crossed with a literary exploration of infidelity and
marital rancor, Elizabeth Brundage's ambitious debut, The Doctor's Wife,
provides more than the usual kick of adrenalin for readers. In a small town
in upstate New York, urban transplants Annie and Michael Knowles--he is a
rising OB/GYN, and she is a once-trailblazing journalist who has settled
into a teaching job--hope to escape the noise and bustle of the city. But
both are drawn into danger: Annie begins an affair with an infamous (and
married) painter, Simon Haas, and Michael is coaxed into helping an ex-lover
at her family planning clinic. He performs abortions for poor women, and
tries to ignore the cars that follow him home and the increasingly
threatening phone calls. ometimes Brundage perfectly navigates the twisting,
overlapping elements of her complicated story line, but other times gives us
too much at a time. And one of her characters, Simon's disturbed wife Lydia
Haas, is so fascinating that she puts the others in the shade. Nevertheless,
this is a rich first novel and a promising beginning for its author.
--Regina Marler
Review of Somebody Else's Daughter by Richard Bausch
Elizabeth Brundage is a brilliant novelist with an unfailing eye for the
detail or word that will make a moment resonate and expand in the mind. It's
what every great dramatist has in abundance. This new book is a riveting
examination of how the past haunts the present, but beyond that, it is a
relentless and powerful study of evil-of the forces that are loosed in our
all too human attempts to love each other and find love. It is very moving
and completely involving and I couldn't put it down. You won't be able to,
either.

Subject: [Conntech] CLASS needs your help! CLASS Meeting July 16th
Message-ID: <620028.61782.qm@web43402.mail.sp1.yahoo.com>
Hi,
I will pass this info along to my staff and I hope I can drum up some interest!
Speaking of support staff, and training....does anyone know who might be GREAT at teaching public LIBRARY service skills ... or as our Chamber says: customer service? I need to do some work with a few younger staff members. I will try the chamber course and see if it directly relates...maybe someone has taken it out there?
I feel it's one gift I can give my part-time workers before they depart for their next job, if any ever open up! At the same time, my younger staff will be able to teach some of my workers a few skills on the computer!
It's been a bit dismal for the staff this year. I'd like to think it will be better, but who knows? I read the LJ article (6/15/2009, p. 23 ) about being selfish and promoting service. We won't be able to open weekends or Wednesday mornings during the summer. I would so love to cram in a bit of training along with the weeding...and the furloughs!
I hope you all enjoyed a great Independence Day! I had time to utilize my Freedom to Read, and it was grand.......
Best,
Eileen Branciforte

Thanks ? we look forward to seeing you on July 16!

You may recall that the 2008 summer issue of Connecticut Libraries included a tribute to long-term colleagues who had departed for one reason or another during the previous year. I plan to repeat that feature in the 2009 summer issue of the newsletter.
I encourage you to send me copy and pictures of your colleagues who have (or will have) departed for one reason or another from the Connecticut library scene.
CRITERIA
? "Colleagues" includes library employees, trustees, friends--anyone who has been part of our community.
? The colleague will have been active in the CT library community for at least 10 years.
? The period covered by this feature is September 2008 through August 2009.
? Word limit is 250 words (but I will flex as necessary). Please send as a Word document.
? Pictures must be digital.
? Deadline for submissions is July 10.
Please send me a note if you have questions.
Thanks,

This is a reminder that all public, academic, and special libraries that are reporting their Interlibrary Loan activity for the 2008-2009 Fiscal Year should do so by July 30. The State Library compiles this information using this survey form:
http://tinyurl.com/6zlcnz , and reports the results here: http://ct.webjunction.org/ct/stats .
If your library has been submitting monthly ILL reports, please finish your monthly submissions for the year by July 30.
If your library has not submitted any monthly ILL reports for FY2009, you can still use the same report form (above) to submit a report for the entire year.
As always, the more libraries that report their ILL activity, the more accurate the ILL report that follows. Thank you for your help. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi all,
Due to budget cuts and the increased demand for all our library
materials, we will be limiting patron holds to three per day effective
July 31. This will especially affect patron placed system holds, where
we see some people putting 8-12 items on hold each and every day. We'll
be filling the first three holds and removing all others. We've placed
signs at the public service desks and OPACs, and are enclosing bookmarks
to inform the public of this change. You should also know that this may
impact your patrons.

Subject: [Conntech] Dreamweaver Software - Price & Educational Discount???
Message-ID: <1247163920_436@lucius>
Hi,
Our library has now decided to redo our website using Dreamweaver....
I've been given the assignment of purchasing a copy of Dreamweaver...
Can anyone suggest an online vendor or store that can sell us a copy of
the most recent version of Dreamweaver?
I've been told that as a 501c3 and being an Educational institution we
qualify
for a cheaper price for Dreamweaver. Have other libraries found this to be
true
as well?
So we need a vendor who can sell us Dreamweaver at a Educational/Non-Profit
discount.
Any suggestions????
Being that no training classes are being held for learning Dreamweaver until
October,
can anyone suggest a good primer book or dvd for learning Dreamweaver???
THANK YOU...
John W.

Message-ID: <3B6688A62489FF4B8A397B75CCD61B546ECA068C98@hedwig.ad.darienlibrary.net>
Greetings!
I'm emailing to let you know about a KidLibCamp that is scheduled for Thursday, August 13th at Darien Library in partnership with Linda Braun. This is a Library Camp for librarians working with children or who are interested in children's services.
If you aren't familiar with the way a library camp works, the idea is that librarians get together in a semi-informal atmosphere to talk about topics of interest. Participants have the chance to share their work, skills, or knowledge and actively participate in the day. Unlike more traditional conferences, KidLibCamp will be highly participatory. Program sessions are determined on the day of the event by those in attendance.
If you are interested in attending Darien's KidLibCamp you can sign-up and let us know the topics you are interested in talking about by going to the KidLibCamp wiki at http://darienkidlibcamp.pbworks.com/. Once on the wiki, on the right you'll see a link to sign-up for the KidLibCamp. On the sign-up page if you click on the edit tab at the top, you can add your name, affiliation, and contact information. There is also space for you to list the topics you would like to talk about, as well as topics you would like to facilitate discussion on. If you aren't sure about the topics you can leave that blank and perhaps enter information at a later date. (A sample list of topics is on the front page of the wiki.)
The information on topics of interest will help set the framework for the day and will provide the jumping off point on August 13th when we determine the actual sessions with the input of everyone in attendance.
Along with the sign-up link you'll also see a link on the right that provides a schedule for the day.
We hope you can attend Darien KidLibCamp! It will be a great way to learn from others, network, and exchange experiences. Feel free to forward this invitation to any colleagues that you think would be interested.
If you have any questions about the KidLibCamp, or about using the project wiki, let me know!

Basic Book Repair - Aug. 6th (MLSC)
Would you like to save money by getting more uses per book? Would you like to keep that out of print book in circulation to meet your library patron's needs? Would you like to quickly repair the broken book spine that came in your new book shipment, rather than waiting for a replacement? Many repairs that can extend the life of your library collection are fast and simple, and can be done with easy-to-obtain, inexpensive materials. This workshop is appropriate for a library staff member or volunteer who will be doing book repair. Emphasis will be on simple repairs for the everyday public or school library collection, rather than on archival or long-term preservation techniques. Topics covered will include: basic book handling, cleaning, & damage prevention, materials needed for basic book repair & where to get them, how to repair a torn page & how to reinsert a loose page or group of pages,
how to reattach a paperback cover, repair options for simple hardcover spine problems, when to cover, re-sew, encase, or rebind books and more.
**HANDS-ON: BRING SOME DAMAGED BOOKS TO SHARE AND REPAIR. Some supplies will be available for sharing. Optionally, you may also bring your own book repair tools to work with, such as scissors, box cutter or Xacto knife, ruler, bone folder, glue stick, and/or glue brush.**

In addition, you will explore the powerful database features of Excel that make it easy to sort, filter and add subtotals. Topics will include:creating advanced functions, developing formulas using named cells and ranges, using 3-D functions to calculate across worksheets,
defining absolute and relative references and much, much more.

Message-ID: <4A5B51CF.7C78.0033.0@cslib.org>
Attention Public libraries:
The media and others still seem very interested in how busy libraries are in this recession. As we did last January, the State Library would like to gather some statistics on library use to help confirm this trend. Rather than wait till November when libraries have completed the Annual Report and Application for State Aid, we are asking libraries to complete a very brief survey on library use during FY2009. There is also a question on your FY2010 budget. If you already have the figures, please go to:

If you plan to attend the CLASS meeting on July 16th , please RSVP to ColburnL@mail.ccsu.edu if possible - but please come anyway even if you don't get a chance to RSVP!
For more information please contact CLASS chair Laurie Colburn at Central CT State University, ColburnL@mail.ccsu.edu or phone 860-832-2170.
Thanks - we look forward to seeing you on July 16!

Library Service Center Users -- Correct Time
Message-ID: <4A5F3581.1A3E.008E.0@cslib.org>
My apologies for posting this to several lists but I wanted as many people informed as possible.
Important Information for Middletown and Willimantic Library Service Center Users
The service centers are in the process of migrating to a new integrated library system. Our online catalog (http://mwsc.sirsi.net) will be unavailable as of 1:30 p.m. today for a period of up to two weeks. Our customers will not be able to place holds, renew items or accurately see what they have checked out during this time. As soon as our new ILS is up and running we will notify the library community and give instructions about how to access our new system.
During this transition you will still be able to access our catalog through ReQuest and be able to place ReQuest interlibrary loans for our material. In addition you can always call, fax or e-mail us borrowing requests.
For the Middletown Service Center
Call 860-704-2200 or 800-437-2313
Fax 860-704-2228
E-mail Jcrooks@cslib.org
For the Willimantic Service Center
Call 860-456-1717 or 800-253-7944
Fax 860-423-5874
E-mail Scormier@cslib.org
During the transition you can still visit the centers in person and borrow materials. The Willimantic Service Center is open Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Middletown Service Center is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
If you have any questions about this transition please call or e-mail either center.
When our catalog is available again we will let everyone know. Thanks very much for your patience during this transition. We are very much looking forward to serving libraries with a new and improved integrated library system.

toward operating expenses, or just for specific purposes such as an
expansion/renovation?

Dear Kathy,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write me here at the Capitol regarding library finding. Activism like yours contributes to the vitality of our democracy, and I appreciate it.
Like you, I am strongly opposed to the Governor's proposed cuts to Connecticut's libraries. I believe it is critically important to Connecticut's students and residents that we provide proper funding for reQuest, ICONN, and the public libraries that are so crucial to our communities. In this time of economic dislocation, our state needs libraries more than ever to help educate and prepare Connecticut's workforce to build a more stable economy over the long term.
As House Chairman of the Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee for Education, I help oversee funding for our state's libraries. In April, I strongly supported an Appropriations budget that restored funding for all key library services, as well as a Democratic budget that maintains this funding. And throughout the legislature's special session, I will continue to fight for library funding to ensure that these great resources remain available for adults and children alike.
Thank you again for your passion and well informed advocacy. As I continue to advocate for library finding from within state government, I encourage you to continue your grass roots activism. Your involvement helps keep our democracy strong, and I very much appreciate it.
Best wished for a happy, healthy summer.

Dear State Representative Fleischmann,
I know that this is an extremely difficult time for our elected leaders. Seeking to balance a budget that must make hard choices between services to offer and programs to support when funding is reduced is not a pleasant or easy task.
As you know, the library programs in the state library's budget were developed to help municipalities throughout Connecticut leverage their own local budgets with cooperative purchasing of library materials and supplies, interlibrary loan, reciprocal borrowing among towns and cities, and state-supported information databases. I hope that the ultimate compromise that you reach will restore these vital and efficient programs. Their cost is low and the benefit to our citizens who need library services in these tough economic times is high.
I thank you, the Governor, and the Legislature in advance for taking action to reinstate these state supported library programs now, when more people than ever need their local library.

Subject: [Conntech] ALA Emerging Leaders program accepting applications
Message-ID:
Sorry if this is a duplicate posting - I don't remember seeing this
information posted here recently. I am especially excited to see that
paraprofessionals can apply this year. Please pass this on to anyone you
know who might be interested.
***
The American Library Association (ALA) is now accepting applications for
the 2010 class of Emerging Leaders. Applications can be found at
http://www.ala.org/cfapps/emergingleaders/. The deadline to apply is
July 31, 2009.
The program is designed to enable approximately 100 library workers to
get on the fast track to ALA and professional leadership. Participants
are given the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, network with
peers and get an inside look into the ALA structure and activities.
For the first time since its establishment, the Emerging Leaders program
will accept non-MLS library workers. Library support staff personnel
are encouraged to apply to the program and will have an opportunity to
be considered for sponsorship through the ALA Library Support Staff
Interests Round Table.
An ALA division, round table, ethnic affiliate, state chapter or school
library media affiliate will sponsor approximately one-third of the
selected applicants. Each sponsor will contribute $1,000 toward
expenses ($500 for each conference). Sponsorship is not required for
participation in the program.
Applicants can indicate on the application which groups they want to
consider them for sponsorship. A list of sponsoring units is included
as part of the online application. You can also check with your state
association and/or state chapter to find out if they are participating
and how to apply for their sponsorship.
No more than one person from any institution will be selected for
participation in the program. In order to be eligible, applicants must
meet the following criteria:
* Be under 35 years of age or be a library worker of any age with
fewer than 5 years experience working in a library.
* Be able to attend both ALA conferences and work virtually in
between each.
* Be prepared to commit to serve on either an ALA, division,
chapter or round table committee, taskforce or workgroup, or in your
state or local professional library organization upon completion of
program.
* Be an ALA member or join upon selection if not already a member.
Program information will be available and updated at:
http://www.ala.org/cfapps/emergingleaders/.
For questions or more information regarding the program, contact
Beatrice Calvin at bcalvin@ala.org.

I just purchased a Sony ICD-PX720 for personal use. It does allow you to
use an external microphone. Also it is compatible with "Dragon Naturally
Speaking". I do not have that software.
The files can be downloaded to a PC and saved as an MP3 file.

Library fight riles up city, leads to book-burning demand
By Jason Hanna
CNN
(CNN) -- A fight over books depicting sex and homosexuality has riled up a small Wisconsin city, cost some library board members their positions and prompted a call for a public book burning.
A washing machine was part of a July 4 parade float made by a group seeking changes at West Bend's library.
var CNN_ArticleChanger = new CNN_imageChanger('cnnImgChngr','/2009/US/07/22/wisconsin.book.row/imgChng/p1-0.init.exclude.html',1,1);
//CNN.imageChanger.load('cnnImgChngr','imgChng/p1-0.exclude.html');
The battle has stirred much of West Bend, a city of roughly 30,000 people about 35 miles north of Milwaukee. Residents have sparred for months on blogs, airwaves and at meetings, including one where a man told the city's library director he should be tarred and feathered.
The row even spread to this year's Fourth of July parade, which included a float featuring a washing machine and a sign that read "keep our library clean."
"If you told me we would be going through a book challenge of this nature, I'd think, 'Never in a million years,' " said Michael Tyree, director of the West Bend Community Memorial Library.
The strife began in February when West Bend couple Jim and Ginny Maziarka objected to some of the content in the city library's young-adult section. They later petitioned the library board to move any sexually explicit books -- the definition of which would be debated -- from the young-adult section to the adult section and to label them as sexually explicit.

Greetings Everyone -- Just a quick note about our Guest Speaker tonight
at 6:00pm --
Rosemary Harris, a CT resident and author of /Pushing Up Daisies/ and
/The Big Dirt Nap/, will talk about her mystery series featuring Paula
Holliday, a NYC executive who gives up her high heels for gardening
clogs and opens a nursery business in the 'burbs, only to find out that
gardening can be a dirty and dangerous business! Her first book,
/Pushing Up Daisies/, was nominated for the Anthony Award in 2008 as
Best First Novel.
Ms. Harris is our last guest writer in our Friends annual /Fridays @
5:30/ summer series, with hors d'oeuvres and a wine bar from
5:30-6:00pm, followed by the speaker and a Q&A period and book
signings. Tickets are on sale at the door for $5.00/each, a greatly
reduced price in light of the economic times.
There are great restaurants in the village by the Goodspeed Opera House
(two blocks away) -- the historic Gelston House and the more casual
patio dining at La Vita Gustosa; also the gourmet take-out of The
Cooking Company on the west side of the Swing Bridge and 2 miles further
upriver along Rte. 154 is the amazing Blue Oar, casual dining on the
River at the Marina and its a BYODrinks (just follow the signs).
Regards in this weird summer!

Subject: [Conntech] State budget situation
Message-ID: <4A69B756020000D70002046A@ns2.cslib.org>
Please excuse the cross posting.
Good Afternoon,
I am posting this update about the state budget situation after receiving several questions from libraries.
The FY 09-10 budget for the State of Connecticut has not been finalized. It will not be final until the legislature passes it and the Governor signs it (or she does not sign it and the legislature overrides her veto).
To recap where we are:
The Governor's original proposed budget eliminated funding for the service centers and InfoAnytime. It also reduced funding for CLC by $17,500 and did not include any additional bond funds for public library construction.
In April, the Appropriations Committee released a budget that restored funding for the service centers and CLC and added back $42,500 for InfoAnytime.
In May, the Governor proposed further cuts in state funding in addition to her original budget. This version of the budget would eliminate funding for the service centers, CLC, iCONN, reQuest, Connecticard and State Aid. It also made substantial cuts in Connecticar and the State Library materials budget. In addition she proposed to suspend funding of the Connecticut Education Network.
Several libraries have asked me where we stand now, what will happen if the programs are eliminated and if we only get some of the funding what will be the State Library's priorities.
Right now we have no budget for the current fiscal year. The possibilities run all the way from 100% funding (the Appropriation's Committee version of the budget) to the elimination of funding for all state-wide services. As you know from the news, the Governor and the legislative leadership are meeting to come up with a budget solution each can support. For now the Office of Policy and Management has allotted each state agency a small amount of money for July to keep current operations afloat. We did not get all we needed but have been able to keep services operating. We do not know what the August allocation will be but the Governor has warned that the allocations will be smaller.
What will we do if funding is reduced or eliminated? If funding for the grant programs is reduced but not eliminated we will notify libraries but plan no further action. If funding is dramatically reduced or eliminated for Connecticard we will convene a state-wide or regional meetings to discuss the impact on the provision of library service to non-residents. I think it is too soon to hold those discussions now.
If funding is reduced for iCONN we are developing a list of priorities. We met with the Council of Academic Library Directors to develop priorities for academic databases. We will work with our Connecticut Digital Library Board's database committee to develop priorities for school and public library databases. If funding is reduced for Connecticar it will mean cutting the number of stops per week to libraries. Actions for the other programs will depend on the severity of the cuts, if any.
The bigger issue I wanted to address, however, is idea that if we receive reductions in any of the budget lines the State Library will be able to make priorities between the programs, moving funding between line items . The State Library's budget includes lines for personnel, books, and other expenses that funds all operations at the State Library itself. In addition each of the statewide programs (iCONN, Statewide database/reQuest, Interlibrary Loan Delivery/Ccar, Connecticard, State Aid, CLC, and InfoAnytime) have their own budget line. We are authorized to spend whatever amount is in each budget line and can not move funding between lines. Please understand that the State Library has had no communication (nor can it communicate) with the final negotiators.

"The bigger issue I wanted to address, however, is idea that if we receive reductions in any of the budget lines the State Library will NOT be able to make priorities between the programs, moving funding between line items . Subject: [Conntech] State Budget Update from CLA's lobbyist
Message-ID: <005a01ca0def$fa91e290$6c30810a@CLC3>
Hi All:
The short message is that it is not over yet, and that we need one last push
this week to make sure that when it is over, all of our statewide library
programs are in the budget in tact. To that end, I share with you this
information (and an exhortation to us "Fearless and Ferocious Librarians")
from CLA's fearless and ferocious lobbyist, Bob Shea.
The Appropriations Committee and the Finance Committee are scheduled to meet
this Thursday, July 30th at 10am to vote on an appropriation plan and a
revenue plan based upon their consensus revenue estimate. In addition,
Governor Rell will be issuing her budget document. Bob doesn't think that
the action that takes place on Thursday the 30th will be a "final" budget
deal for FY10-11, however, the plans/documents proposed on the 30th could
certainly be considered to be blueprints for the final budget, and we want
to be on the right side of these decisions.
This means that we have to continue pushing Governor Rell and Lt. Governor
Fedele and the key lawmakers to SUPPORT library programs and to reject the
cuts that Governor Rell proposed back in May. Even if you and your
colleagues and patrons at your libraries have already contacted the budget
negotiators, NOW is the time to contact them again. (Our plan is "Email
Early and Email Often!")
Contact the key budget negotiators listed below, and let them know that
school is out and the libraries are packed like never before. We need help
from the good folks at the State Capitol to keep up with this ever-growing
demand. "Please reject cuts to our library programs!" Bob says to try to get
your favorite patrons and board members to send emails as well to the
following key budget negotiators. Emails to Governor Rell, Lt. Governor
Fedele and OPM Secretary Genuario are particularly crucial at this time.
Here's the list:
--Governor Jodi Rell: governor.rell@ct.gov
--Lt. Governor Mike Fedele: LTGovernor.Fedele@ct.gov
--OPM Secretary Robert Genuario: Robert.genuario@ct.gov
--House Speaker Christopher Donovan: Christopher.donovan@cga.ct.gov

Attention Public Libraries:
Tom Newman sent this message out a couple of weeks ago but so far only about 35 libraries have responded. So this is an official nudge - we would appreciate data from as many libraries as possible. Here is the original message -
The media and others are very interested in how busy libraries are in this recession.

Subject: [Conntech] iCONN - Next Generation System (budget permitting)
Message-ID: <4A71ABAC.8829.00BC.0@cslib.org>
Good afternoon:
Despite the current uncertainty regarding the budget, we are actively working with both Auto-Graphics and Cengage Gale on the development of the "next generation" of iCONN which is planned for delivery during the latter half of August.
* A mock-up of a new iCONN search screen is at:
http://model-rqst-agent.auto-graphics.com/homepages/customerwide/iconnsearch_long.asp
* The new system is described in detail in a document ("iCONN - Next Generation System") located at http://www.iconn.org/Forthcoming.aspx
These changes were originally planned for August 1 - to afford schools more time to prepare for the changes before the new school year starts - but unfortunately were delayed to later in August due to the budget.
Please take the time to review this information if you haven't already so that you can be prepared for these changes when they happen later in August (budget permitting). If you have questions, feel free to contact me or anyone on the iCONN staff listed at http://www.iconn.org/AdvisoryBoardStaff.aspx

Randi Ashton-Pritting
University of Hartford Libraries
Dear Colleague,
As part of an on-going research project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, we are seeking responses to a brief survey on the roles librarians could play in emergency planning and response activities. This information will be used to help develop appropriate learning experiences for current and future practitioners.
The survey asks you to rank the appropriateness of a variety of possible roles that have been identified for librarians. The answers should reflect your personal opinion about the appropriateness of the roles; they do not need to reflect an actual role that you have played. You will also have a chance to provide more detailed comments about additional roles that you believe librarians could/should play in emergency planning and response activities.
The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Data will be kept confidential, and the results of the survey will only be reported in the aggregate.
Here is a link to the survey:

Subject: [Conntech] Signs on Lawn
Message-ID: <4A731455.30201@owlibrary.org>
Hi All,
Do any of you have a policy about signs on your lawn by organizations
using your meeting room? My assumption is that based on my prior talks
with the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom that once we allowed one
outside (non-library) organization to use our lawn, that this would make
it a "public space" just as they advised me regarding exhibits.
I will be developing a written policy about it since we have had a few
instances now of organizations asking or doing without asking, I
wondered if any of you have a written policy already in place to share?
Thanks,
Ann Marie
