I encourage you to send me copy and pictures of your colleagues who have (or will have) departed for one reason or another from the Connecticut library scene. CRITERIA ? Participants will work with their own library's information to create a strategic framework. You will also practice working with tools needed to facilitate the process and guide its implementation. Course Description: Libraries need to establish a strategic framework if they are to be successful in moving from reactionary to strategic thinking and decision making. This framework consists of: a vision for your library's future, a mission that defines what the library is doing, values that shape library actions, strategies that zero in on key success approaches, and action plans to guide your daily, weekly and monthly actions. Target Audience: Introduction to Strategic Planning is designed for people who are involved in the strategic planning process in your library, as a leader, team member or human resources specialist. This session will also be useful for those who have a leadership role in the organization, administrators and managers, in order to better understand how to successful engage the organization in an efficient and effective planning process. What's more, we had to wear pink jackets over our clothes, as opposed to the senior library assistants who wore grey. What memories your email brought back! I like the title - you are right - they do far more than shelve - at least in the smaller libraries. Craig Hotckkiss, Program Director at the Mark Twain House & Museum, and Sonya Green, Program Coordiante at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, have taken their show on the road. "Twain and Stowe: Effecting Social Change" is now available to libraries for a very reasonable fee. Both Craig and Sonya are excellent speakers who keep the audience entranced and engaged. I highly recommend this program and was happily surprised by the outstanding attendance (we had just under 50 people attend the program). Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe lived next door to each other and both made a major impact on their worlds with their literature. Jaime Hammond, MLS Naugatuck Valley Community College ________________________________ In January of this year, a team of library professionals participating in the ALA Emerging Leaders project (http://wikis.ala.org/emergingleaders ) were asked by ALA and PLA to survey public library directors, managers, and administrators. The goal of the survey is to assess the skills and techniques used by small and rural libraries to build community relations, and to determine what activities and resources are used to build those relations or improve upon those relations. This email is a request for your assistance with the survey. It should take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and will remain anonymous, unless you select otherwise. The results of this survey will be presented to the Public Library Association and the American Library Association and will assist in the aggregation of current resources for small and rural librarians and the development of new resources. You can access the survey at: http://tinyurl.com/CommunityRelation The survey will remain open until May 29, 2009. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us el_team_b@ala.org Thank you for participating. The program, "Tapping into Learning Environments of the Future," will examine various emerging aspects of the learning environment and how they affect information literacy instruction. This year's program features a keynote presentation by Donald P. Buckley, PhD, Professor of Biology and Director of Learning Technology for the School of Health Sciences at Quinnipiac University. Professor Buckley will speak on information fluency and the educational role of technology. The Decade of the Brain* challenged him to rethink how he taught and how one might use technology in one's teaching. His work coupling the use of technology to facilitate the learning of inquiry and to promote learning with understanding has won him four international awards and is now archived in the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American History as part of our national archive of the international transition to the Information Age. Registration opens Thursday, April 23, 2009. The registration fee is $35 for ACRL/NEC members, $40 for non-members, and $30 for students. Register early as seats are limited. More details will be finalized as we approach summer. In addition, we will have a program in September to help patrons understand the events of the book. Please consider adding this title to your adult summer reading lists. ~Tina Panik "In They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky, Alepho, Benson, and Benjamin, by turn, recount their experiences [during the Sudanese civil war]. They vividly recall the family, friends, and tribal world they left far behind them and their desperate efforts to keep track of one another." Their narrative voices create a "captivating memoir of Sudan and a powerful portrait of war as seen through the eyes of children. And it is, in the end, an inspiring and unforgettable tribute to the tenacity of even the youngest human spirits." Excerpt taken from http://www.theypouredfire.com/ This is a book that will allow your book club to explore these themes: The power of the individual History of Africa Ethnocentrism Metamorphosis Hope Emigration/Immigration Personal responsibility Triumph over adversity Refugees Civil War/Genocide Triumph of the human spirit Human Rights Current Events Racism This project is made possible by a grant from the Avon Education Foundation. Two of the authors will visit during this event. We work on a fiscal year basis (July thru June).   We would like to have a sheet of paper that staff members can maintain to keep track of time used during the FY also.   Is there a source for information like this that you can suggest to us on the internet? Has the ALA, CLA, webjunction or CLC have this info on their websites??   Of if anyone would volunteer to email me a copy of their sheets or give us suggestions we would be forever in your debt.   Thank You?   John W. Seriously. We were able to move from one floor to three floors, and the noise level decreases as you go up in the building. It has helped a lot in making the library attractive to the people who want QUIET and those who want a place to INTERACT. So our library is arranged like this: First floor - popular materials (fiction, large print, Spanish, periodicals, AV) and lots of traffic - noisy Second floor - children's materials from birth to teens and two service desks - often noisy, especially at storytime and after school Third floor - nonfiction, reference, special collections, computer center - quiet and Capital Room - SILENT Our library consultant called the third floor "the seriousness of purpose" floor. He also reminded us that "everything wants to be on the first floor" but that isn't possible as you get bigger. As part of the Healthy Messages Initiative, I am forwarding this timely message from the CT Dept of Health: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now that the fishing season has started, it is important that the public is informed about making healthy fish choices. Fish is a good source of nutrition, however certain fish contain contaminants such as mercury that can be unhealthy when eaten in large amounts. The information provided outlines the types of fish to eat to get the benefits of eating fish while reducing the risk from chemicals. Attached is a brochure, "A Woman's Guide to Eating Fish Safely", that provides guidance for pregnant women and young children, a "grocery" card, in English and Spanish, that fits into a coupon holder and provides a reference when shopping at the fish counter, and a magnet to remind people to Eat Fish Safely that provides a telephone number and website for more information. A few examples of how NOT to do it from various libraries that I've worked at: - Elevator in one part of the building and stairs in another. The good news of this scenario was that it gave options depending upon what side of the building you were in, so you could readily get up & down between floors. But the bad news for the patrons was they felt the building was a maze. And invariably you will get people that come in the front door complaining that whichever way to get to another floor is near the front door -- it is not the way they want/need. I understand that some folks obviously cannot walk stairs -- but there are people who will refuse to ride an elevator too. - An elevator in the reference room or quiet study area means that there will be continual traffic, noise and interruptions for those trying to read and study in that area. In one library I worked at, the children's department was on the 2nd floor and the elevator was in the reference room. The steady stream of parents & kids in strollers was a huge issue. I got frequent complaints from reference room patrons about the noisy kids in strollers. I did not think the kids were being unusually noisy - they simply were out of place for that quiet study area. Keep the path to the elevator in high traffic areas. - Atriums and 2nd floor landings that look out onto first floor areas can work like an amplifier for sound. One new library building I worked in was unfortunately a classic case of an architect that knew nothing about the functionality of libraries. In terms of that architect's goofy placement of the elevator and stairs - there was a landing outside the children's department that looked over the first floor reference area. It was a nice view. Also a great place to throw things over the railing (lets face it - kids will be kids). And the sound that amplified and projected over the reference room was an unrelenting problem. Sure makes me glad that I now work at a single floor facility. We are doing long range planning as well with the eye to building expansion. But our existing building and property are such that we will be keeping with one floor. For us the challenge will be to place the front door in a way that allows ease of access to various collections without it being a hike to any single area. Best wishes with it, Paul Paul Ericsson Branch Manager, Bemidji (MN) Public Library 218-751-3963 ericssonp@krls.org At 03:29 PM 5/20/2009, ckubala@columbiactlibrary.org wrote: >Our library is in the process of creating a plan for future >library expansion. However, all of these cuts below in the State Library budget are to programs that directly serve municipal libraries and the citizens who use them. We must let Governor Rell know the harm that these cuts will render directly to municipalities and to libraries' cooperative efforts to share resources for the good of all CT residents. What the cuts mean: "Suspend Funding for Statewide Digital Library"--ICONN databases, now free to public, school, and academic libraries, with over 30 million searches, are GONE! "Suspend Funding for Connecticard Payments"--CCard, which now reimburses municipal libraries for the 4.7 million transactions when they lend library materials to out-of-towners annually, is GONE! "Suspend Funding for the Statewide Database Program"--reQuest, the statewide catalog of 20.8 million holdings in CT libraries, which facilitates resource sharing and interlibrary loan, is GONE! "Suspend Funding for Grants to Public Libraries"--Annual state aid payments to 180 public libraries are GONE! "Suspend Funding for Cooperating Library Service Units"--The 46.5% discount libraries get on books through CLC, along with media coops, InfoAnytime, JobNow, and discounts on databases, movie licensing, supplies, furniture, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs and are GONE! "Reduce Funding for Interlibrary Loan Service"--Connecticar, the delivery service that facilitates sharing of 2 million items annually among libraries in the 169 towns is reduced by one third! Also cut in the Department of Information Technology budget is CEN (Connecticut Education Network). "OE" items eliminated include software licenses, and internet services and local/long distance telecommunications which are now free to public libraries and schools. In addition to contacting Governor Rell (governor.rell@ct.gov), these key lawmakers, below, who are negotiating the budget must receive multiple emails and phone calls from the librarians in their towns, staff members, board members, friends, family members, etc. We are coming down to the wire and we don't want the legislature to even consider enacting the proposed cuts!! With the help of some staff at Bibliomation and the State, I gathered statistics and figures to show how the Kent community will be affected. I've put some examples below. Remember, our numbers are small because we are small, but that small size means every penny counts. We must raise 69% of our operating budget this year. Just my suggestion . . . . Laura McLaughlin Director Kent Memorial Library, Kent 860-927-3761 phone 860-927-1427 fax kentmemoriallibrary.org "Suspend Funding for Statewide Digital Library"--ICONN databases, now free to public, school, and academic libraries, with over 30 million searches, are GONE! KML spends $300 to provide access to over 30 databases from computers within the library as well as from patron's homes. From those databases published by Gale only, Kent residents made over 2,000 inquiries in 2008 resulting in nearly 2,300 successful information retrievals. Without ICONN, Kent patrons will not have access to any paid databases as the budget cannot support the high cost of contracting individually with companies. "Suspend Funding for the Statewide Database Program"--reQuest, the statewide catalog of 20.8 million holdings in CT libraries, which facilitates resource sharing and interlibrary loan, is GONE! KML relies heavily on reQuest (cost included in the $300 noted above) to obtain multiple copies of book discussion titles, esoteric materials for local writers doing research and those items we cannot find in our Bibliomation catalog. During 2008 patrons borrowed over 240 items through reQuest. "Suspend Funding for Connecticard Payments"--CCard, which now reimburses municipal libraries for the 4.7 million transactions when they lend library materials to out-of-towners annually, is GONE! KML would lose the approximately $350 it currently receives for participating in Connecticard. "Suspend Funding for Grants to Public Libraries"--Annual state aid payments to 180 public libraries are GONE! KML would lose the approximately $1,300 as a basic State grant. Although KML purchases its books locally and does not currently subscribe to other databases, the DVD coop provides 60 new to us DVDs each month (that's 720 a year) for $600. That $600 would purchase fewer than 50 DVDs annually. The material processing supplies and audiobook selections are discounted due to the cooperative purchasing power of the CLC. "Reduce Funding for Interlibrary Loan Service"--Connecticar, the delivery service that facilitates sharing of 2 million items annually among libraries in the 169 towns is reduced by one third! KML receives Connecticar delivery twice weekly. This service allows patrons to share seamlessly the resources of Bibliomation as well as the statewide catalog reQuest. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
