Since 1998, the Young Writers Trust has awarded more than $182,000 to
Connecticut teenagers. More than 5,000 young poets and writers have
competed in the program.
The Connecticut State University System is the primary donor for prize
money. Prize money and expenses are also funded by banks, law and real
estate firms, the Litchfield-Morris Rotary, numerous businesses
including a construction firm, a wine merchant, a publishing firm,
restaurants, bookstores, an art gallery, a tree care firm and a printing
company. Sponsors are noted via display ads in the annual program.
Teenage writers, ages 13-18, are being encouraged to submit original
entries to the annual literary competition which also offers state
champions an opportunity to have their work published in the literary
journal of the Connecticut State University System, Connecticut Review.
Entry forms for the 2010 competition will be handed out at the Hartford
Club event. Forms are currently available on line at the Connecticut
State University System site, http://www.ct.edu/community/ctyoungwriters.htm
During this academic year, two young writers from each of Connecticut's
eight counties will win cash awards for either prose or poetry writing.
Entries must be nominated by a teacher in a public or private school,
and postmarked on or before February 1, 2010. Home school entries are
also accepted. (In 2009, there were about 580 entries.)
Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Eastern Connecticut
State University in Willimantic, Southern Connecticut State University
in New Haven, and Western Connecticut State University in Danbury will
receive the initial entries and host county award ceremonies in April
2010. Entries are sent directly to one of the universities, depending
upon the county in which the student lives (see list at CSU System Young
Writers website).
>From the select group of county winners, a distinguished panel of
judges will select the state's top poet and writer at a dinner and
awards ceremony held in late May or early June 2010. The 2009 event was
held at the Mark Twain House & Museum. Winners are also interviewed by
local media, and have their work highlighted on the website of the
Connecticut State University System.
A home-schooled student from Redding and a student at Westover School in
Middlebury were awarded the top statewide prizes in prose and poetry May
31, 2009 in the 12th annual IMPAC-Connecticut State University System
Young Writers competition.
The competition highlights works of poetry and prose submitted by
teenagers from throughout the state. A panel of judges selected works
submitted by Emma Lowenberg,16, of the Lowenberg Home School in Redding,
for her story, "Bernard," and Felicity Sheehy, 16, of Westover School of
Middlebury, for her poem, "Evening Conversation."
At the annual awards celebration, held at Hartford's Mark Twain House &
Museum for the first time, both students received $1,000 for their
efforts. Lowenberg and Sheehy also were awarded $500 in April after
being named, respectively, prose and poetry winners in Fairfield and New
Haven counties.

*/Workshop leaders:/*
* David Cappella - Cappella is a professor of English at Central
Connecticut State University. He has co-authored two books on the
teaching of poetry with Baron Wormser: "Teaching the Art of Poetry: The
Moves" (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2000) and "A Surge of Language:
Teaching Poetry Day to Day" (Heinemann, 2004). He is the winner of the
2004 Bright Hill Press Poetry Chapbook Competition, of which the first
poem was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. He has published poems in The
Connecticut Review, The Bryant Literary Review, Diner and other journals.
* George Kimball - Kimball (born December 29, 1943 in Grass Valley,
California) is an American author and journalist who spent 25 years as a
sports columnist for the Boston Herald before retiring in 2005.
Considered one of the foremost boxing writers of his era, he is the
author of "Four Kings: Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran, and the Last
Great Era of Boxing." Since 1997 he has written the weekly 'America at
Large' column for The Irish Times in Dublin, Ireland, and has
contributed to a number of boxing websites. He lives in New York City.
In 1980 he began a columnist for the Herald, and for the next
quarter-century covered major sporting events around the world,
including Super Bowls and World Series, NBA Finals and the Olympic
Games, golf's four majors and Ryder Cups, Wimbledon and the America's
Cup yacht races. He covered nearly 400 world title fights, and was the
1985 recipient of the Nat Fleischer Award for Excellence in Boxing
Journalism. Kimball also received 'Best Column' awards from the Boxing
Writers Association of America, the Golf Writers Association of America,
Boston Magazine, and United Press International. Kimball served as a
regular co-host for several sports talk radio programs in the Boston
area, as a television analyst for boxing broadcasts on the Fox SportsNet
and Comcast networks, and as a panelist for several PBS programs
produced by WGBH-TV. He appeared (as a boxing writer covering a fight
between Woody Harrelson and Antonio Banderas) in Ron Shelton's 1999 film
"Play it to the Bone." In a ceremony officiated by former heavyweight
champion George Foreman, Kimball married New York psychiatrist Marge
Marash in 2004.
Efforts are being made to keep the price of admission for the Hartford
Club event to under $40.
As we begin our 13th year, we face daunting challenges.
The Trust incurred a $10,000 shortfall of annual funding for the last
cycle. But, we were able to continue the program for youngsters in all
eight of Connecticut's counties. Many poets, writers, business people,
university administrators and board members stepped up to fill the void.
Sadly, our founding donor suffered an untimely death last month.
We are bouncing back with vigor, confidence and a clear focus. The CSU
System -- led by the Chancellor, Dr. David Carter, and supported by
literally hundreds of volunteers - has ensured the continuation of the
program.
Our 2010 entry form has been mailed to all public, parochial and private
schools in Connecticut. To highlight the entry deadline of Feb. 1, 2010,
The Hartford Club has agreed to host the Jan. 15, 2010 event.

Subject: [Conntech] Genealogy Books
Message-ID:
Dear Colleague,
I am the Director of Russell Library, the public library in Middletown.
We are fortunate in Middletown in having Godfrey
Memorial Library, the only library in the state
solely dedicated to genealogy. Godfrey recently
received a large supply of genealogy books and is offering them for sale.
I thought some libraries in the state might be
especially interested in the books listed
below. If you are, please contact directly Nancy
Thurrott
nthurrott@godfrey.org
She can also provide a complete list of the books for sale.

SirsiDynix Webinar: From Libraries to Lifebraries - Dec. 9th (ONLINE)
As libraries continue to evolve to meet customers' needs in a rapidly changing culture, the concern over the future of print and the "book" remains core to their existence. However, in looking at current trends, there is evidence to suggest otherwise. The future of libraries may not be dependent on the creation or evolution of new service delivery models based upon the book, it may actually reside in something more "deeply local." Join Helene Blowers in a lively conversation about "new life" opportunities for libraries. As old formats and service models decline, there's a new phoenix rising from the shadows. West Hartford Public uses Red Tag locking DVD cases for our circulating
collection of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. This has left us with a surplus
of almost new standard DVD cases that we are not using. We have several
boxes of approximately 100 DVD cases in assorted colors and sizes
(single or double) free for the taking. Please email me off list if you
are interested and can arrange pick up at the Noah Webster Library, 20

Hi all-
On Friday, Nov. 6 at 11 am, a customer service rep from the Universal
Service Fund program will be at HML to update me about the program and give
advice about how better to use the funds available. It seems really silly
to me for someone to come all this way and talk to only me, so...I'm
inviting anyone who would like to talk to a real person in person about this
@#$*** program! Let me know if you would like to come.

Subject: CT participation needed
Attention Public Libraries:
Would you fill out a national survey that might help attract more funding to libraries for Internet services? ALA is asking for your help in completing the 2009-2010 Public Library Funding & Technology Access survey. So far only 27 libraries in CT have completed it. We know this is a difficult time to ask libraries to complete yet another survey, especially with our State Annual Report deadline looming so soon. But your participation in the survey is very important, and directly impacts the ability of ALA and others to advocate on behalf of public libraries.
The 2009-2010 Public Library Funding & Technology Access survey (available for completion at http://www.plinternetsurvey.org) closes Friday, November 13, 2009. Thanks for your help.

Message-ID:
You've probably all heard the news about Bridgeport's landmark vote to
approve a library-only tax, a move allowed under state law, but never before
exercised in Connecticut. I refer you to http://www.connpost.com/ci_13707887
to read more, the text of which is printed below.
The Bridgeport backstory that all of us library folk will especially
appreciate, however, is Jill Dugas Hughes "Liberate Libraries" Facebook
page (http://www.facebook.com/l/c6d65;www.liberatelibraries.com) which she
and fellow "Library Liberators" used effectively throughout the campaign to
keep friends and followers abreast of campaign news and events. Although I'm
not a Bridgeport resident, I really enjoyed getting the email updates, as I
do Amy Terlaga's communications about Bibliomation's Open Source Project,
BibliOak at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=171935276419.
I congratulate both of our colleagues for using an effective medium to keep
the people who need (or want!) to know informed about these specific,
time-sensitive projects of their organizations.

BRIDGEPORT -- A new chapter in the history of the city's public libraries
was written Tuesday when voters approved a measure mandating a 1-mill tax to
finance the library system.
Unofficial tallies indicate the majority of voters who cast ballots on the
referendum question backed the new levy, but official tallies were not
available late Tuesday.
The referendum question, No. 2 on the ballot, read: "Shall a 1-mill tax be
levied to establish and maintain a free public library and reading room?"
The city's library system now has a $4.8 million budget, about 0.69 of a
mill under the city's current tax rate of 38.74 mills. The city has a $500
million budget.
Approval of the new tax will increase the library's budget to about $6.9
million. A mill is the amount property owners pay in taxes for every $1,000
worth of assessed value.
Before the election, city officials had indicated that the "in-kind"
services the libraries are provided by the city at no charge would likely
end if the measure passed.

Do any of you out there that do podcasts have such a form? If you do, would you mind sending it my way so I can take a look at it? Also, what were the procedures you took in creating it? Is it something simple and really casual or did you go to the extent of lawyers, etc.?

Connecticut Libraries
Yesterday Governor Rell ordered $34,076,998 in state budget cuts to address the growing state deficit. For the State Library the total cuts were $250,805.
Personal Services $ 50,000
Equipment $ 5
State-Wide Digital Library (iCONN) $ 98,440
Legal/Legislative Library Materials $ 57,000
State-Wide Data Base Program (reQuest) $ 33,735
Info Anytime $ 2,125
Computer Access $ 9,500
Connecticar and State Aid were not cut.
We are currently reviewing how we will deal with and implement these new cuts which we believe are in addition to our hold backs. The press release that announced the cuts also indicated that the Governor is working on a new deficit mitigation plan. This could result in future budget cuts in the coming weeks. As we learn more, we will let you know.

Message-ID: <8C81AA7D3B12F4408C6B3359AEB001CC0721B030@LIB-EMarks.library.lib.uconn.edu>
Hello -- I've been asked to pass this along. It's about a serious budget
threat to The State Library of Massachusetts which is an incredibly fine
resource for Massachusetts, New England and American history. According
to the Governor's web site, Governor Patrick's budget request cuts over
a third of the budget but mentions that alternate funding is being
explored. No further details are given about the "alternate funding"
which, given our current economic status, sounds doubtful at best to me.
I signed the online petition linked below -- you may want to also. If
you take steps to sign the online petition you will at the end of the
process be asked to donate but at that point you have already signed the
petition and you can close the web page if you do not wish to donate.
Following is the message from the State Library of Massachusetts.
Regards, Bill Uricchio, UConn Libraries
At a press conference on Thursday, October 29, the Massachusetts
Governor's Office announced that Governor Patrick is considering closing
the State Library of Massachusetts

Technology&L2=Oversight+Agencies&L3=The+State+Library+of+Massachusetts&s

as a cost-saving measure. This closure will have a monumental impact on
the cultural heritage of the Commonwealth.
Open to the public since 1826, the State Library has developed
comprehensive collections in the areas of government documents, law,
Massachusetts history, and public and current affairs. From the Bradford
manuscript "Of Plimoth Plantation" to the ever-expanding digital
repository, the State Library has collected items of crucial importance
to the record of Massachusetts' historical wealth.

The State Library is undertaking exciting digital initiatives to provide
greater public access to our collections.
* Electronic Repository: This summer, the library upgraded its
electronic repository of the Acts and Resolves and other state
publications. In addition to a new look and feel and enhanced features,
we have added several thousand new electronic documents.
* Scanning: Through a partnership with the UMass Boston libraries
and the Boston Library Consortium, the library has scanned the Acts and
Resolves from 1692 to present, the Reports of the Attorney General (1832
to present) and several other series. These digital objects will be
added to our electronic repository and are currently available on our
website.
* Electronic Journals List: Through our affiliation with our library
network, we are now able to provide an A to Z list of electronic
journals available through the library's subscriptions (some require a
State Library of Massachusetts card for access).
Thank you for your signatures and your support.

Message-ID: <63bda9180911100802u7ef2f8beq4b79a3e911e574d4@mail.gmail.com>
The CLA Career Development Committee is still looking for volunteers to
participate in our SCSU Speed Mentoring event on November 17th! We need many
types of librarianship represented, and still need some law librarians, YA
librarians, and about 10 additional librarians in any position to even out
the numbers. If you know of anybody that might be interested, please forward
this message on. Details below.
Thanks!
David Boudinot
*Join us!*
The CLA Career Development Committee is looking for librarians, students,
and those new to the profession to participate in a fun networking activity
called Speed Mentoring! We are hosting an event at Southern Connecticut
State University on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 from 6-8 pm. Those
passionate about librarianship are encouraged to attend!
Visit http://speedmentoring.pbworks.com for a signup sheet and more
information.
*How does it work?*
Each librarian mentor will be paired with a student. After brief
introductions the pair will talk about any aspect of librarianship that
interests them for five minutes. Then the students will rotate to the next
mentor and continue this process until they have spoken with all of the
mentors. It is kind of like speed dating, except the focus here is on
building professional relationships to help students with their career
goals, and for mentors to exchange ideas and address concerns from those new
to the profession. Speed Mentoring is a great way for librarians to share
their experiences, and for students to connect with a variety of librarians
and learn about our diverse profession.

Message-ID: <4AFBD1E5.360B.00D7.0@cslib.org>
The "Creating a Stronger Board for Your Organization" is on the CE
calendar. You can send the announcement out to the listserv. Anyone that
wants to attend should select "yes" in the "Connecticut library or
library organization staff member" field. I noted twice in the
announcement that it was only open to current library board trustees.
Important Workshop sponsored by the Association of CT Library Boards
and the Connecticut State Library
Creating a Stronger Board for Your Organization
An effective board should be at the heart of your organization. But too
often, that isn?t the case. Many boards are dysfunctional. Even those
boards that claim to be sophisticated and experienced often are
ineffective. And many board experts claim that effective governance is a
?rare and unnatural act?.
If ever there was a time to be afraid of inadequate governance, now is
hat time. Just think about scandals in the for-profit and nonprofit
sectors: places like Enron, Adelphia, United Way, Red Cross, and the
Smithsonian. Think about how these scandals affect the credibility of
organizations. What do you think your donors and prospective donors
think? And what does government do in response? Things like
Sarbanes-Oxley and the new IRS 990 with its governance questions.
So what?s the big secret? What are the essential questions to
explore? What are the standards your board should aspire to? Who is
responsible for developing the optimum board and how can this be done?
This interactive workshop focuses on key topics that are essential to
creating and sustaining an effective board. Join Simone P. Joyaux,
ACFRE, one of those governance experts that doesn?t see all that much
good governance going on.
Presenter: SimoneJoyaux is recognized internationally as one of the
most provocative and thoughtful leaders in the nonprofit sector. Her
books receive rave reviews and are standards in the profession. Her
popular blogs challenge the status quo and provide useful tips to
nonprofits around the world. She speaks all over North America and also
presents in places like Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Mexico
City, Paris, and Geneva. Joyaux is an expert in board and fund
development, strategic planning, and management. She serves on faculty
for the Masters Program in Philanthropy and Development at Saint
Mary?s University in Minnesota. Visit her website at Joyaux
Associates
Who should attend: Workshop is open to current library board trustees
and their library directors.

Connecticut's first ever "Snapshot: One Day in the Life of Connecticut's
Libraries" is planned for February 18, 2010. To make it a success, we
need every public and academic library in the state to participate by
collecting information to capture the impact that Connecticut libraries
have on their communities on a typical day. We promise to make it easy
- all of the forms, flyers and information you'll need will be available
on our website.
Today, we are asking you to let us know that your library plans to be
part of this important statewide project. Just go to
http://snapshotctlib.wordpress.com/join-us/ and add your library's name
to the list of participants. Please "Join Us."

One less stamp, one more voiceSomeone asked about the playaway opinions I received in May from my query. Here they are. Any others out there? I have modified my opinion about their usability, but their durability and rabid battery use are still issues.
Hal Bright
"you have exactly hit on the issues we experienced in .... We were part of the CLC Playaway Co-op for its first year and had moderate interest and circulation of the units. Consequently, we withdrew from the co-op circuit and began purchasing them through BWI. The titles available were/are limited, and often more costly than the book on CD format. Additionally, we absorbed the cost of battery replacement and earbuds, adding to the overall cost. But durability was the deciding factor in our discontinuation of the medium; our unit failure rate was similar to yours. We are retaining the Playaways we own but they are winnowing themselves into oblivion."
"I have found everything you posted in your email to be true for us too. I have not bought any new Playaways for quite a while now as we do not have the money and the problems make me feel they are not a good use for my very limited AV budget."
"
We have purchased the Playaways for about 2 years and our patrons love them -- many of them have circ'd more than 35X. I think (just my belief) they appeal to an older demographic not acquanited with downloading and MP3 players.
I know that the sound fidelity is not great, but can be made better with better headphones (ones that don't permit as much back ground noise). I do not have a replacement rate any where near 15-20%. If I get a bad one, then it is maybe once a quarter.
The issue we have is that we buy large packages of batteries to keep them going -- tried the recyclables but the circ staff doesn't seem to be able to find the time to actually put them in the charger, which we bought for just this purpose.
"
"
I haven't heard of failures but our usage is fairly low. We are also not impressed with the titles available.
"

Library Community:
Ever since we received notice of the latest 5% cut of $98,000 to the iCONN budget, we've been crunching the numbers to figure out a way to save the rest of the databases. We've been able to realize some savings in the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) budget because of various belt tightening measures so we have decided to use those savings to make up the latest cut which is in keeping with our LSTA Five Year plan. So bottom line, as of today, we will not have further reductions in our iCONN database offerings.
Let's hope for no further cuts!

We have a collection of 1973 era 16 mm films (Weston Woods, etc.) to be
discarded (finally!) Does anyone know of a buyer or collector of these
things, or am I dreaming? Thanks for any thoughts.

Quick question - are any libraries using a subscription service for Ebooks
that patrons can then load onto their own Kindles/Sony E-Readers? Similar to
Overdrive or NetLibrary for downloadable audiobooks. Not sure there even is
such a thing as my understanding is that the content and readers are
proprietary. But patrons are saying they heard libraries are doing this.
Which services? Well received /used by your patrons? We had three questions
this morning regarding this, patrons want to know which reader they should
buy based on what we have subscribed to. We would be grateful for any
advice. Please respond off list - I will summarize if there is interest.

Subject: [Conntech] Another session of Creating a Stronger Board
Message-ID: <4B051DE4.360B.00D7.0@cslib.org>
Due to the overwhelming response to the workshop "Creating a Stronger
Board for Your Organization" the Association of Connecticut Library
Boards and the Connecticut State Library are pleased to announce a
repeat session on January 11th at Southbury Public Library.
Creating a Stronger Board for Your Organization
January 11, 2010
1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Southbury Public Library
An effective board should be at the heart of your organization. But too
often, that isn?t the case. Many boards are dysfunctional. Even those
boards that claim to be sophisticated and experienced often are
ineffective. And many board experts claim that effective governance is
a ?rare and unnatural act?.
Visit her website at
http://simonejoyaux.com
Who should attend: Workshop is open to current library board trustees
and their library directors. Because of the popularity of this workshop,
please limit attendance to the library director and two trustees if
possible.
Register at:
http://evanced.info/cslib/evanced/eventcalendar.asp
If you are a trustee, please check off the box indicating you are a
library staff member. Otherwise you will be placed on a waiting list.
If you signed up for the Willimantic session and would prefer to attend
in Southington, please email Kris Abery at kabery@cslib.org and she will
move your registration.
Thank you for your interest in this workshop.

Jordan Sonnenblick, author of Drums, Girls and

nomineewill visit the Henry Carter Hull Library
in Clinton on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 3:45 pm.
Jordan will read an excerpt from After Ever
After, the sequel to Drums
which will be
published in February. Copies of his books will
be available for purchase and autographing.
A former middle school teacher, Jordan knows how
teens think and feel. In a review, Marilyn
Chandler McEntyre described Drums, Girls and
Dangerous Pie as Lively, upbeat, realistic, and
moving, this story is a remarkable first novel
for young adults. The protagonist-narrator's own
wry sense of humor, his articulate ambivalence
about his own social skills, his passion for
music, and his complicated love for and
impatience with his family provide a complex and
useful look at how serious illness invades and
changes ordinary life in ways that demand all the
resources one has developed for self-awareness
and adaptation
Highly discussable.
Join us on December 8th for a highly enjoyable visit with Jordan Sonnenblick.

I suggest you contact an arts organization (like The Arts Council of Greater
New Haven or the Creative Arts Workshop) which might offer the films to
artists who work in collage or other media. Artists are really great at
using found materials to exciting effect! (No for-profit idea comes to

You probably saw this on the tubes today. Library workers in

Amusingly, the graphic novel in question was Alan Moores

73 libraries are now official "Snapshot" partners - is your library one
of them? Our goal is to have 100% participation from Connecticut's
public and academic libraries and since there are 194 public libraries
(that's principal public libraries and non-principal public libraries)
and approximately 60 academic libraries in the state, we're still
waiting for many of you to step up to the challenge.
In case you haven't heard about "Snapshot: One Day in the Life of
Connecticut's Libraries," here's a little background: We are asking
libraries to take pictures, gather patron comments, and collect some
simple statistics on February 18, 2010, that will capture the impact
that Connecticut libraries have on their communities on a typical day.
Participation will be easy; everything you need is available on the
website. We'll compile all of results and make them available for you
to share with legislators, local officials, board members, etc.
Please take the first step and let us know that your library plans to be
part of this important statewide project. Just go to
http://snapshotctlib.wordpress.com/join-us/ and add your library's name
to the list of participants. Please "Join Us."

Message-ID: <97c6e0b20911231049wfc47bc3y5947d5c992ddc6a4@mail.gmail.com>
Yale World Fellow Beatrice Mategwa will present *Sudan at a Crossroad: a
contemporary perspective* at New Haven Public Library, 133 Elm St., on
Thursday, Dec. 3 at 6pm.
Sudan (officially the Republic of the Sudan) is the largest country in
Africa and in the Arab World. Its bordering neighbors include Egypt,
Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the
Central African Republic, Chad and Libya. The Nile divides the country east
and west.
Since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1956, Sudan has
suffered civil war, armed conflict with Chad, and charges of
government-backed genocide. A 2005 peace deal ended two decades of war and
paved the way for 10,000 United Nations peacekeepers to monitor and verify
a Comprehensive Peace Agreement. The country is preparing for its first
elections in more than 20 years in April 2010.
Broadcast journalist Beatrice Mategwa currently covers the North-South peace
deal in Sudan and has studied how conflict impacts communities. In her
capacity as Producer/Head of Television for the United Nations Mission in
Sudan she has covered the deployment of UN troops to Sudan, the return of
displaced populations to their homes, the rehabilitation of communities
directly affected by war, and other issues pertaining to the North-South
conflict in Sudan. She has worked as a producer and/or reporter for Reuters
Television, East Africa, Kenya Television Network and other media.
There is no charge for this discussion, and the public is invited. Free
parking is available. Reservations may be made at
www.sudan.eventbrite.comor by calling the library at (203) 946-8835.

The Farmington and Simsbury Libraries will sponsor our 3rd biannual "unconference" library camp for public librarians. Past library camps have focused on technology, and there will be a place for applied technology discussions in many of our sessions. However, we would like to see the whole range of topics come up during this session, especially issues relevant to public libraries. This will be a half-day event. Let me know if you have questions. The following webinars are scheduled for Dec. 2009. Descriptions and registration information are listed below
ACRL OnPoint: Job Seeking in a Tough Economy - Dec. 2nd (ONLINE)
Aspiring academic librarians may find job seeking difficult in today's economy, given budget cuts and hiring freezes at many colleges/universities. Join this month's chat whether you're a new librarian looking for tips or an experienced one with advice to share. Discuss how to stay current while "waiting" for your first academic librarian job. Is teaching as adjunct faculty in a subject area an appropriate "path" to academic librarianship? Would it be better to work as any kind of librarian, such as in a public library? What will make your resume shine in the hands of a search committee? This month's chat is convened by: Mara M.J. Egherman, graduate student in Iowa's SLIS school; Karin Durin, Eric P. Garcia, and Mara L. Houdyshell, reference and instruction librarians at California State University-Northridge and authors of "From the inside out and the outside in: The academic library interview process in a tight economy",. For additional details and registration information visit: Job Seeking in a Tough Economy. For additional details and registration information visit: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/events/onpoint/index.cfm#schedule
WebJunction Webinar: Library Computer Networking Q&A - Dec. 2nd (ONLINE)
WebJunction's November focus is on Networking, and during the month we'll be collecting your burning networking questions. Then, on December 2, WebJunction and TechSoup for Libraries are teaming up to bring you a panel of library technology experts to field your questions in a "Car Talk" fashion that's sure to be informative and fun!
The expert panel includes:
Robert Williams, Technology Consultant at the South Texas Library System
Chris Jowaisas Library Systems Grants Administrator of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission
Monica M. Schultz, IT Director at the Peninsula Library System
For additional details and registration information visit: http://evanced.info/webjunction/evanced/eventcalendar.asp
OPAL: Connecting Kids with Great Websites - Dec. 8th (ONLINE)
Learn how to find, evaluate and use Web sites for kids! This presentation features the chairs of the ALSC Great Web Sites for Kids Committee who evaluate 100s of sites every year to find fun and educational tools for children and families. They'll show you what the committee does to come up with their widely used "Great Web Sites for Kids" list and how you can incorporate these resources into your library programming. For additional details and registration information visit: http://www.opal-online.org/progschrono.htm
For additional details and registration information visit: http://sirsidynixinstitute.com/seminar_page.php?sid=114
WebJunction Webinar: Integrated Library Systems: Open Source and Customization - Dec. 10th (ONLINE)
Join us on December 10th for a discussion of Integrated Library Systems (ILSs) and the trend toward customizability through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) with library systems expert Marshall Breeding and representatives from leading vendors in the field. We'll discuss new features and capabilities available in the most modern library software, and what it really means for these tools to be "customizable." This event will coincide with the publication of Marshall Breeding's December 2009 issue of Library Technology Reports and is presented in collaboration with ALA TechSource. For additional details and registration information visit: http://evanced.info/webjunction/evanced/eventcalendar.asp
Infopeople: Writing a Library Behavior Code - Dec. 10th (ONLINE)
A teen in the library is bothering other library users.
A woman is breastfeeding her baby in the children's room.
A man asks for help looking up N1H1, says he has it and then sneezes loudly.
Are these behaviors prohibited by the library's code of conduct? If so, what can library staff legally do to address the situation?
This webinar will benefit participants by helping them draft legally enforceable behavior codes. It offers guidance on reasonable behavior rules, distinguished from restrictions on user's free speech rights. What type of notice must the library give its users about its behavior policies? When is an appeals process required, and what should it entail?
The webinar also looks at the emerging issue of library user behavior at library spaces online in chat, text, blog comments as well as third party spaces like library myspace and flickr pages.
For additional details and registration information visit: http://infopeople.org/training/webcasts/webcast_data/345/index.html
OPAL: The Future of Libraries, Books, & Reading - Dec. 16th (ONLINE)
The shared futures of libraries, books, and reading seem very hazy at present. Join us for a monthly, lively, informal discussion of new developments, challenges, and opportunities. It'll be a roundtable, so everyone is welcome to chime in. If it's a FiLBeRt discussion, it's going to be nutty!. For additional details and registration information visit: http://www.opal-online.org/progschrono.htm

Subject: [Conntech] LSTA session added in Waterbury (NVCC)
Message-ID: <4B0D584D.9A91.00CD.0@cslib.org>
Hello Conntechers,
For those of you in the Waterbury area I just added a date for the LSTA workshops at the Naugatuck Valley Community College on December 21st. There are two sessions: The 10-11:30AM session covers outcome based evaluation. The 1-4:30PM session covers the LSTA grant application and best practices. Sessions are offered throughout the state with some dates and locations TBA.
If you have a idea and think you would like to pursue LSTA funding for it, read on and visit ct.webjunction's LSTA page ( http://ct.webjunction.org/ct/lsta ) for more information.
In order to be eligible to submit an LSTA application (due March 5), a library must send at least one attendee to one of the scheduled LSTA grant application sessions. Though not required, I heartily advise applicants to attend a session on outcome based evaluation as well.
If you would like more information or have questions, please feel free to contact me at your convenience. Be sure to register for sessions so that I can plan to include you; registration is handled through DLD ( http://ct.webjunction.org )'s continuing education calendar ( http://evanced.info/cslib/evanced/eventcalendar.asp )which will also show you all the other education opportunities we make available.

The Public Library of New London has an 1891 bound book of its first

is about 1-2 inches thick. We would like to digitize it for

We would appreciate any advice about companies, preferably in
Connecticut, that have done this work successfully for anyone in the

Well, hasn't Joe brought up an interesting one. We regularly film our
Monthly Authors for the Town TV channel. However, we never do it
without securing their permission ahead of time. I/we consider the
program content to be the property of the performer, and thus, should
not by "used" without their permission. The only exception I can think
of is for things like when the schools hold CT Loves to Read Day here.
The cameras role that day because everyone wants their little darlings
on tape. And, I guess I do not see it in the same vein as "real"
performers, whether they be paid or not.
I have yet to run across the problem, but it sure has me thinking
because I agree with Joe. What if the program is controversial? What
will the film be used for? Or, YouTube postings without permission?

We also tape our "Authors on Stage" events but ask the authors permission for this action. We then provide each author with a DVD copy of their program , add a copy to our collection for check-out by those who missed the event and run it on New Canaan Cable Access, Channel 79. Never had anyone else try to tape it without asking the Library and the author for permission.

If I have a concern, it's that others in the audience might not like to
be recorded, even indirectly. Might make them uncomfortable to be part
of the show. And who knows how the video will be used, edited,
distributed after the event? It seems to me that that if a program will
be video recorded (by the library or anyone else), this should be
included as part of the program publicity, so everyone knows going in.

We don't have the technological capability to routinely videotape (or audiotape) presentations in any real way, but we have upon occasion had freelancers tape for some special purpose. We amended our standard photo permission form to include video- and audiotaping and made sure to get one from all the performers involved. At least one declined to be taped, for whatever reason.
I think we as program presenters have an obligation to understand a performer's wishes and ensure they are adhered to. Especially with YouTube and mash-ups of all kinds out there, performers can be very sensitive about what happens to their work. And unauthorized taping of material the artist may have available for sale seems to me to constitute stealing.
At "commercial" dramatic and musical performances almost everywhere there is language announced, posted in the lobby or printed in the program prohibiting the recording of the presentation. The wording has always sounded ominously legal but I am not sure what law it is based on.

Things can be worked out with presenters/performers rather easily --
they either allow taping or they don't. We've had authors say "no,"
though they almost all say "yes."
But even if the talent does says "yes," I still feel funny taping
without giving the audience advance notice that the taping will occur.
Audience members need to know there will be taping going on well before
they get to the door.
How about sign in the program room that says: Library programs may be
photographed or recorded by library staff only. And something about
taping on publicity flyers, if the program might in fact be taped. That
might help a little?
