Since 1997 he has written the weekly 'America at Large' column for The Irish Times in Dublin, Ireland, and has contributed to a number of boxing websites. He lives in New York City. In a ceremony officiated by former heavyweight champion George Foreman, Kimball married New York psychiatrist Marge Marash in 2004. Efforts are being made to keep the price of admission for the Hartford Club event to under $40. As we begin our 13th year, we face daunting challenges. The Trust incurred a $10,000 shortfall of annual funding for the last cycle. But, we were able to continue the program for youngsters in all eight of Connecticut's counties. Many poets, writers, business people, university administrators and board members stepped up to fill the void. Sadly, our founding donor suffered an untimely death last month. We are bouncing back with vigor, confidence and a clear focus. The CSU System -- led by the Chancellor, Dr. David Carter, and supported by literally hundreds of volunteers - has ensured the continuation of the program. Our 2010 entry form has been mailed to all public, parochial and private schools in Connecticut. To highlight the entry deadline of Feb. 1, 2010, The Hartford Club has agreed to host the Jan. 15, 2010 event. We are fortunate in Middletown in having Godfrey Memorial Library, the only library in the state solely dedicated to genealogy. Godfrey recently received a large supply of genealogy books and is offering them for sale. I thought some libraries in the state might be especially interested in the books listed below. If you are, please contact directly Nancy Thurrott nthurrott@godfrey.org She can also provide a complete list of the books for sale. Message-ID: You've probably all heard the news about Bridgeport's landmark vote to approve a library-only tax, a move allowed under state law, but never before exercised in Connecticut. I refer you to http://www.connpost.com/ci_13707887 to read more, the text of which is printed below. The Bridgeport backstory that all of us library folk will especially appreciate, however, is Jill Dugas Hughes "Liberate Libraries" Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/l/c6d65;www.liberatelibraries.com) which she and fellow "Library Liberators" used effectively throughout the campaign to keep friends and followers abreast of campaign news and events. Although I'm not a Bridgeport resident, I really enjoyed getting the email updates, as I do Amy Terlaga's communications about Bibliomation's Open Source Project, BibliOak at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=171935276419. I congratulate both of our colleagues for using an effective medium to keep the people who need (or want!) to know informed about these specific, time-sensitive projects of their organizations. ____________________________________________________________________________ BRIDGEPORT -- A new chapter in the history of the city's public libraries was written Tuesday when voters approved a measure mandating a 1-mill tax to finance the library system. Unofficial tallies indicate the majority of voters who cast ballots on the referendum question backed the new levy, but official tallies were not available late Tuesday. The referendum question, No. 2 on the ballot, read: "Shall a 1-mill tax be levied to establish and maintain a free public library and reading room?" The city's library system now has a $4.8 million budget, about 0.69 of a mill under the city's current tax rate of 38.74 mills. The city has a $500 million budget. Approval of the new tax will increase the library's budget to about $6.9 million. A mill is the amount property owners pay in taxes for every $1,000 worth of assessed value. Before the election, city officials had indicated that the "in-kind" services the libraries are provided by the city at no charge would likely end if the measure passed. It's about a serious budget threat to The State Library of Massachusetts which is an incredibly fine resource for Massachusetts, New England and American history. According to the Governor's web site, Governor Patrick's budget request cuts over a third of the budget but mentions that alternate funding is being explored. No further details are given about the "alternate funding" which, given our current economic status, sounds doubtful at best to me. I signed the online petition linked below -- you may want to also. If you take steps to sign the online petition you will at the end of the process be asked to donate but at that point you have already signed the petition and you can close the web page if you do not wish to donate. Following is the message from the State Library of Massachusetts. Regards, Bill Uricchio, UConn Libraries At a press conference on Thursday, October 29, the Massachusetts Governor's Office announced that Governor Patrick is considering closing the State Library of Massachusetts http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=afagencylanding&L=4&L0=Home&L1=Research+%26+ Technology&L2=Oversight+Agencies&L3=The+State+Library+of+Massachusetts&s id=Eoaf as a cost-saving measure. This closure will have a monumental impact on the cultural heritage of the Commonwealth. Open to the public since 1826, the State Library has developed comprehensive collections in the areas of government documents, law, Massachusetts history, and public and current affairs. From the Bradford manuscript "Of Plimoth Plantation" to the ever-expanding digital repository, the State Library has collected items of crucial importance to the record of Massachusetts' historical wealth. The State Library is undertaking exciting digital initiatives to provide greater public access to our collections. * Electronic Repository: This summer, the library upgraded its electronic repository of the Acts and Resolves and other state publications. In addition to a new look and feel and enhanced features, we have added several thousand new electronic documents. * Scanning: Through a partnership with the UMass Boston libraries and the Boston Library Consortium, the library has scanned the Acts and Resolves from 1692 to present, the Reports of the Attorney General (1832 to present) and several other series. These digital objects will be added to our electronic repository and are currently available on our website. * Electronic Journals List: Through our affiliation with our library network, we are now able to provide an A to Z list of electronic journals available through the library's subscriptions (some require a State Library of Massachusetts card for access). We need many types of librarianship represented, and still need some law librarians, YA librarians, and about 10 additional librarians in any position to even out the numbers. If you know of anybody that might be interested, please forward this message on. Details below. Thanks! David Boudinot *Join us!* The CLA Career Development Committee is looking for librarians, students, and those new to the profession to participate in a fun networking activity called Speed Mentoring! We are hosting an event at Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 from 6-8 pm. Those passionate about librarianship are encouraged to attend! Visit http://speedmentoring.pbworks.com for a signup sheet and more information. *How does it work?* Each librarian mentor will be paired with a student. After brief introductions the pair will talk about any aspect of librarianship that interests them for five minutes. Then the students will rotate to the next mentor and continue this process until they have spoken with all of the mentors. It is kind of like speed dating, except the focus here is on building professional relationships to help students with their career goals, and for mentors to exchange ideas and address concerns from those new to the profession. Speed Mentoring is a great way for librarians to share their experiences, and for students to connect with a variety of librarians and learn about our diverse profession. *Details* Speed Mentoring at Southern Connecticut State University hosted by the Connecticut Library Association Career Development Committee & SCSU Information & Library Science Department Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 6-8 pm SCSU Engleman Hall Room 121 A-B in the B wing Questions? I noted twice in the announcement that it was only open to current library board trustees. Important Workshop sponsored by the Association of CT Library Boards and the Connecticut State Library Creating a Stronger Board for Your Organization An effective board should be at the heart of your organization. But too often, that isn?t the case. Many boards are dysfunctional. Even those boards that claim to be sophisticated and experienced often are ineffective. And many board experts claim that effective governance is a ?rare and unnatural act?. If ever there was a time to be afraid of inadequate governance, now is hat time. Just think about scandals in the for-profit and nonprofit sectors: places like Enron, Adelphia, United Way, Red Cross, and the Smithsonian. Think about how these scandals affect the credibility of organizations. What do you think your donors and prospective donors think? And what does government do in response? Things like Sarbanes-Oxley and the new IRS 990 with its governance questions. So what?s the big secret? What are the essential questions to explore? What are the standards your board should aspire to? Who is responsible for developing the optimum board and how can this be done? This interactive workshop focuses on key topics that are essential to creating and sustaining an effective board. Join Simone P. Joyaux, ACFRE, one of those governance experts that doesn?t see all that much good governance going on. Presenter: SimoneJoyaux is recognized internationally as one of the most provocative and thoughtful leaders in the nonprofit sector. Here they are. Any others out there? I have modified my opinion about their usability, but their durability and rabid battery use are still issues. Hal Bright "you have exactly hit on the issues we experienced in .... We were part of the CLC Playaway Co-op for its first year and had moderate interest and circulation of the units. Consequently, we withdrew from the co-op circuit and began purchasing them through BWI. The titles available were/are limited, and often more costly than the book on CD format. Additionally, we absorbed the cost of battery replacement and earbuds, adding to the overall cost. But durability was the deciding factor in our discontinuation of the medium; our unit failure rate was similar to yours. We are retaining the Playaways we own but they are winnowing themselves into oblivion." "I have found everything you posted in your email to be true for us too. I have not bought any new Playaways for quite a while now as we do not have the money and the problems make me feel they are not a good use for my very limited AV budget." " We have purchased the Playaways for about 2 years and our patrons love them -- many of them have circ'd more than 35X. I think (just my belief) they appeal to an older demographic not acquanited with downloading and MP3 players. I know that the sound fidelity is not great, but can be made better with better headphones (ones that don't permit as much back ground noise). I do not have a replacement rate any where near 15-20%. If I get a bad one, then it is maybe once a quarter. The issue we have is that we buy large packages of batteries to keep them going -- tried the recyclables but the circ staff doesn't seem to be able to find the time to actually put them in the charger, which we bought for just this purpose. Creating a Stronger Board for Your Organization January 11, 2010 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Southbury Public Library An effective board should be at the heart of your organization. Her books receive rave reviews and are standards in the profession. Her popular blogs challenge the status quo and provide useful tips to nonprofits around the world. She speaks all over North America and also presents in places like Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Mexico City, Paris, and Geneva. Joyaux is an expert in board and fund development, strategic planning, and management. She serves on faculty for the Masters Program in Philanthropy and Development at Saint Mary?s University in Minnesota. Visit her website at http://simonejoyaux.com Who should attend: Workshop is open to current library board trustees and their library directors. Because of the popularity of this workshop, please limit attendance to the library director and two trustees if possible. The protagonist-narrator's own wry sense of humor, his articulate ambivalence about his own social skills, his passion for music, and his complicated love for and impatience with his family provide a complex and useful look at how serious illness invades and changes ordinary life in ways that demand all the resources one has developed for self-awareness and adaptation…Highly discussable.” Join us on December 8th for a highly enjoyable visit with Jordan Sonnenblick. Our goal is to have 100% participation from Connecticut's public and academic libraries and since there are 194 public libraries (that's principal public libraries and non-principal public libraries) and approximately 60 academic libraries in the state, we're still waiting for many of you to step up to the challenge. In case you haven't heard about "Snapshot: One Day in the Life of Connecticut's Libraries," here's a little background: We are asking libraries to take pictures, gather patron comments, and collect some simple statistics on February 18, 2010, that will capture the impact that Connecticut libraries have on their communities on a typical day. Participation will be easy; everything you need is available on the website. We'll compile all of results and make them available for you to share with legislators, local officials, board members, etc. Please take the first step and let us know that your library plans to be part of this important statewide project. Just go to http://snapshotctlib.wordpress.com/join-us/ and add your library's name to the list of participants. Please "Join Us." ___________________________ Betty Anne Reiter breiter@town.groton.ct.us Linda Avellar linda@fergusonlibrary.org Co-chairs, CLA Publicity Committee Snapshot Day is co-sponsored by CLA, CLC and the Connecticut State Library. Sudan (officially the Republic of the Sudan) is the largest country in Africa and in the Arab World. Its bordering neighbors include Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Chad and Libya. The Nile divides the country east and west. Since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1956, Sudan has suffered civil war, armed conflict with Chad, and charges of government-backed genocide. A 2005 peace deal ended two decades of war and paved the way for 10,000 United Nations peacekeepers to monitor and verify a Comprehensive Peace Agreement. The country is preparing for its first elections in more than 20 years in April 2010. Broadcast journalist Beatrice Mategwa currently covers the North-South peace deal in Sudan and has studied how conflict impacts communities. In her capacity as Producer/Head of Television for the United Nations Mission in Sudan she has covered the deployment of UN troops to Sudan, the return of displaced populations to their homes, the rehabilitation of communities directly affected by war, and other issues pertaining to the North-South conflict in Sudan. She has worked as a producer and/or reporter for Reuters Television, East Africa, Kenya Television Network and other media. There is no charge for this discussion, and the public is invited. Free parking is available. Join this month's chat whether you're a new librarian looking for tips or an experienced one with advice to share. Discuss how to stay current while "waiting" for your first academic librarian job. Is teaching as adjunct faculty in a subject area an appropriate "path" to academic librarianship? Would it be better to work as any kind of librarian, such as in a public library? What will make your resume shine in the hands of a search committee? This month's chat is convened by: Mara M.J. Egherman, graduate student in Iowa's SLIS school; Karin Durin, Eric P. Garcia, and Mara L. Houdyshell, reference and instruction librarians at California State University-Northridge and authors of "From the inside out and the outside in: The academic library interview process in a tight economy",. Then, on December 2, WebJunction and TechSoup for Libraries are teaming up to bring you a panel of library technology experts to field your questions in a "Car Talk" fashion that's sure to be informative and fun! The expert panel includes: Robert Williams, Technology Consultant at the South Texas Library System Chris Jowaisas Library Systems Grants Administrator of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission Monica M. This presentation features the chairs of the ALSC Great Web Sites for Kids Committee who evaluate 100s of sites every year to find fun and educational tools for children and families. They'll show you what the committee does to come up with their widely used "Great Web Sites for Kids" list and how you can incorporate these resources into your library programming. However, in looking at current trends, there is evidence to suggest otherwise. The future of libraries may not be dependent on the creation or evolution of new service delivery models based upon the book, it may actually reside in something more "deeply local." Join Helene Blowers in a lively conversation about "new life" opportunities for libraries. As old formats and service models decline, there's a new phoenix rising from the shadows. For additional details and registration information visit: http://sirsidynixinstitute.com/seminar_page.php?sid=114 WebJunction Webinar: Integrated Library Systems: Open Source and Customization - Dec. 10th (ONLINE) Join us on December 10th for a discussion of Integrated Library Systems (ILSs) and the trend toward customizability through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) with library systems expert Marshall Breeding and representatives from leading vendors in the field. We'll discuss new features and capabilities available in the most modern library software, and what it really means for these tools to be "customizable." This event will coincide with the publication of Marshall Breeding's December 2009 issue of Library Technology Reports and is presented in collaboration with ALA TechSource. For additional details and registration information visit: http://evanced.info/webjunction/evanced/eventcalendar.asp Infopeople: Writing a Library Behavior Code - Dec. 10th (ONLINE) A teen in the library is bothering other library users. A woman is breastfeeding her baby in the children's room. A man asks for help looking up N1H1, says he has it and then sneezes loudly. Are these behaviors prohibited by the library's code of conduct? If so, what can library staff legally do to address the situation? This webinar will benefit participants by helping them draft legally enforceable behavior codes. It offers guidance on reasonable behavior rules, distinguished from restrictions on user's free speech rights. What type of notice must the library give its users about its behavior policies? When is an appeals process required, and what should it entail? The webinar also looks at the emerging issue of library user behavior at library spaces online in chat, text, blog comments as well as third party spaces like library myspace and flickr pages. Join us for a monthly, lively, informal discussion of new developments, challenges, and opportunities. It'll be a roundtable, so everyone is welcome to chime in. If it's a FiLBeRt discussion, it's going to be nutty!. We amended our standard photo permission form to include video- and audiotaping and made sure to get one from all the performers involved. At least one declined to be taped, for whatever reason. I think we as program presenters have an obligation to understand a performer's wishes and ensure they are adhered to. Especially with YouTube and mash-ups of all kinds out there, performers can be very sensitive about what happens to their work. And unauthorized taping of material the artist may have available for sale seems to me to constitute stealing. At "commercial" dramatic and musical performances almost everywhere there is language announced, posted in the lobby or printed in the program prohibiting the recording of the presentation. The wording has always sounded ominously legal but I am not sure what law it is based on. Audience members need to know there will be taping going on well before they get to the door. I/we consider the program content to be the property of the performer, and thus, should not by "used" without their permission. The only exception I can think of is for things like when the schools hold CT Loves to Read Day here. The cameras role that day because everyone wants their little darlings on tape. And, I guess I do not see it in the same vein as "real" performers, whether they be paid or not. I have yet to run across the problem, but it sure has me thinking because I agree with Joe. What if the program is controversial? What will the film be used for? Or, YouTube postings without permission? Would you ask them to stop? -----Original Message----- From: conntech-bounces+linda=fergusonlibrary.org@mylist.net [mailto:conntech-bounces+linda=fergusonlibrary.org@mylist.net] On Behalf Of Joe Cadieux Sent: Monday, November 30, 2009 11:41 AM To: clclist@ctlibrarians.org; conntech@mylist.net Subject: [Conntech] Audience Members Taping Library Programs If I have a concern, it's that others in the audience might not like to be recorded, even indirectly. Might make them uncomfortable to be part of the show. And who knows how the video will be used, edited, distributed after the event? It seems to me that that if a program will be video recorded (by the library or anyone else), this should be included as part of the program publicity, so everyone knows going in. Joe -------------- Hello: We had two programs over the weekend, one with Ralph Nader, the other on Japanese Carpentry. I noticed that both were being video recorded by members of the audience. Did not ask for permission. Never ran into this before. Wondering if any CT library has a policy on audience members taping library programs? If so, would you share. Thank you very much. Joseph J.
